Alternative school teacher arrested on sex solicitation involving minors, battery charges
Audley Hewitt, 61, who was named 2022 IR Prep Teacher of the Year, was arrested just before noon July 17, law enforcement and school district records show.
His full charges include soliciting a sexual battery act by a custodian with a victim under 18; battery touch or strike; unlawful use of a two-way communication device, according to Indian River County Sheriff's Office records.
Arrest records show he was arrested at his residence west of Vero Beach in the 6400 block of 26th Street at 11:51 a.m.
A student reported Hewitt's alleged actions saying he was "engaged in inappropriate relationships" and "soliciting a student," according to an Indian River County Sheriff's Office news release.
A School District of Indian River County spokesperson provided a statement acknowledging the arrest and 'allegations involving a teacher at IR Prep,' and that both referred to Hewitt.
The allegations in the student's report occurred from Jan. 22 through March, Capt. Joe Abollo said. He said the district notified law enforcement of the student's report at a later date.
It's unclear at what point between March and the date of Hewitt's arrest the school notified the agency of the matter.
'As soon as the matter was brought to the District's attention, appropriate steps were immediately taken,' district spokesperson Kyra Schafte said in an emailed statement. 'The District conducted an internal investigation and, consistent with its obligations, promptly reported the matter to the Department of Children and Families and to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.'
Superintendent David Moore approved a measure to speed up Hewitt's termination of employment.
IR Prep at 1426 18th Street is a secondary school for students in grades six through12.
Hewitt was not found among an online list of faculty, however, an Oct. 11, 2022 Facebook picture and caption depicts the school's principal, Dariyall Brown, posing with Hewitt who was awarded as that year's 'Teacher of the Year.'

Family members of girl killed in sailboat crash near Miami Beach arrive in South Florida
Family members of one of the two girls who died in a deadly sailboat crash near Miami Beach on Monday have arrived in Miami. Seven-year-old Mila Yankelevich is the granddaughter of Cris Morena and Gustavo Yankelevich, two prominent Argentinian media producers. On Wednesday, they landed at Miami International Airport on a flight from Buenos Aires, but did not wish to make a comment. She was the youngest daughter of television producer and director Tomas Yankelevich and actress Sofia Reca. Yankelevich, who lived in both Surfside and Argentina with her family, is remembered as a joyful child who loved dancing, singing and dressing up in costumes. Along with Yankelevich, a 13-year-old girl, who has not been identified, also died as a result of the crash. They were among five girls and a camp counselor who were aboard the sailboat when it was struck by a barge in Biscayne Bay between Hibiscus Island and Monument Island, authorities said. An 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl remain in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to the Coast Guard. A 12-year-old girl and a 19-year old woman were evaluated on-site after the crash but were not taken to a hospital. The Coast Guard, which is the lead agency in the crash investigation, said Tuesday it will be thorough. "Know that we grieve with you. We will not take this lightly and we will not forget. We owe you answers and we are committed to finding them," Coast Guard Miami Sector Commander Frank Florio said. Florio said they have interviewed the captain of the tugboat that was piloting the barge. "We did do alcohol testing and we have conducted the chemical testing as well," he said. Those test results are pending. The children were part of a summer sailing camp operated by the Miami Yacht Club and affiliated with the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. Members of the Miami Yacht Club are asking for privacy at this time. The club said they are closed Maldonado contributed to this report.

Hulk Hogan's last conversation with estranged daughter Brooke revealed
Hulk Hogan and his daughter, Brooke Hogan, may have had a rocky relationship in recent years, but they still had a lot of love for each other. 'He was very proud of her, she was his little girl,' a source close to Hogan family tells Page Six. 'We still can't believe he is gone.' Brooke and Hulk have been estranged since September 2023 when the 37-year-old skipped out on her father's wedding to Sky Daily. In light of Hulk's tragic death, their final emotional conversation has now been revealed. Their last conversation, which allegedly took place two weeks before her father tied the knot with Daily, involved Brooke telling her father she loved him, reports TMZ. Brooke allegedly told her father how deep love and concern for his well-being went, and shared she wanted him to slow down his career due to his health problems. While Hulk didn't listen to his daughter's advice, he did extend a vague apology to his daughter. Brooke had been estranged from her dad due to a series of issues they'd been experiencing and Hulk's alleged treatment of her. On several occasions, Brooke's husband Steven Oleksy allegedly tried to mend their relationship. But, his efforts were fruitless as sources said Hulk was mainly interested in a relationship with his daughter on his terms. Sources close to Brooke claim she's told those around her that she's 'grateful' that she said 'I love you' to her father in their final conversation and is 'at peace' with their relationship knowing she did all she could to fix their situation. Insiders went on to tell the outlet that Brooke learned of the WWE star's death from her brother, Nick, who texted her husband to inform him of the news. The wrestling legend was pronounced dead after Clearwater Fire & Rescue personnel were dispatched to his Clearwater, Fla., home late Thursday morning in response to a call about a 'cardiac arrest.' He was 71. 'Unfortunately, we must confirm that Terry Bollea, aka Hulk Hogan, passed away this morning,' his reps said in a statement, confirming his death. 'We are heartbroken. He was such a great human being and friend.' His passing came soon after Daily shut down negative rumors about his health earlier this month after Hulk had underwent an 'intense surgery' in May. 'His heart is strong, and there was never any lack of oxygen or brain damage. None of those rumors are true,' she said at the time, responding to rumors that he was in a coma. 'He's been recovering from a major four-level Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), which is an intense surgery with a long and layered healing process,' she continued. An ACDF is a procedure that removes a damaged intervertebral disc from the spine in the neck. 'If you look it up, you'll see what the last six weeks have involved… not just for his spine, but also for his vocal cords, and the eating/breathing tubes that are clamped over during surgery.' After his procedure, he had been 'in an out of the hospital to support that recovery.' Hulk is survived by Daily, his first wife, Linda Hogan, and the children they shared: Brooke and Nick. Cape Coral man arrested year after fatal crash on DUI, vehicular homicide charges
A Cape Coral elder faces charges nearly a year after a Bradenton woman died in a Fort Myers crash while he was driving drunk and with a revoked license, authorities say. Larry Farmer, 86, faces one count of DUI manslaughter, one count of vehicular homicide, one count of driving while his license was revoked causing death and two counts of DUI causing property damage. According to troopers, on Sept. 29, 2024, Farmer's 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south within the northbound lanes on Interstate 75, near mile marker 139, in Fort Myers. Declared incompetent for trial: Yanko Romero, facing possible death penalty in random slaying, remanded to hospital As Farmer continued to drive south, a 2021 Ford Bronco, driven by a 56-year-old Bradenton woman, was traveling north on I-75. Troopers said both drivers swerved their vehicles toward the west paved shoulder to avoid collision crashing head-on. Both cars sustained extensive front-end damage, troopers said. Both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers. The female driver, whose identity authorities have not released, died at the hospital. Authorities did not clarify by publication why his license was revoked. Farmer was arrested the afternoon of July 29 for the fatal crash and released within five hours on $37,000 bond.
