Fortnite player fined $175,000 and permanently banned after Epic Games lawsuit

Express Tribune25-06-2025
Epic Games has won a significant legal battle against a Fortnite player accused of using cheating software and hardware during a competitive tournament.
On June 25, 2025, a judge ruled in favor of Epic after the defendant failed to respond to the lawsuit, ordering the player to pay $175,000 in damages. The funds will be donated to charity, as confirmed by the company.
The lawsuit was originally filed on December 18, 2024, after the cheater was caught exploiting Fortnite's systems during a competitive event. According to Epic Games, the player used multiple accounts and advanced cheating tools in an attempt to avoid detection but was ultimately exposed by their anti-cheat measures.

'Cheating has no place in Fortnite and we're doing everything we can to stop it, including legal action,' Epic said in an earlier statement. The ruling not only imposes a financial penalty but also enforces a lifetime ban on the player from Fortnite.

The gaming community has largely praised the decision, calling it a strong deterrent for future cheaters in competitive gaming. Content creator NickEh30 and gaming news outlet ModernWarzone both shared support on social media.
This marks another instance of Epic Games leveraging the legal system to uphold competitive integrity. In a similar case earlier this year, another player was banned and had their prize money redirected to charity after cheating in the 2023 Fortnite Championship Grand Finals.

Jynxzi's Twitch account hacked and briefly banned before quick recovery

Popular Twitch streamer Jynxzi, known for his Rainbow Six Siege gameplay and massive online following, was briefly banned from Twitch on July 17, 2025, after his account was hacked. The incident sent shockwaves through the gaming community as fans tried to understand what went wrong. With over 7.5 million Twitch followers and nearly 5 million YouTube subscribers, Jynxzi is one of the most recognizable names in streaming. His recent collaboration with fellow creator IShowSpeed on an upcoming Fortnite tournament with a $100,000 prize pool had further solidified his standing in esports entertainment. The chaos began around 3:39 PM when Jynxzi's Twitch account was suddenly banned. Twitch cited 'hacking and platform manipulation' as the reason for the action, listing offenses such as DDoS, phishing, and exploits in its policy. A message from Twitch mentioned: 'Due to the severe nature of this violation... your access to Twitch services is indefinitely restricted.' Jynxzi quickly responded via (formerly Twitter): Just got banned on Twitch temporarily because someone hacked into my account Hopefully we can return today. — Jynxzi (@jynxzi) July 17, 2025 Roughly 30 minutes later, Twitch reversed the ban, allowing Jynxzi to resume streaming. The identity of the hacker remains unknown, and it's unclear how the breach occurred. This event reignited conversations around Twitch account security and the vulnerability of high-profile streamers. While Jynxzi's channel remains intact, the incident is a stark reminder that even top-tier creators face cybersecurity risks.

Epic Games stated, 'Both have been ordered to stop these activities and are banned from playing Fortnite.' As part of the legal outcome, the players were required to post apologies on their social media accounts. One of the individuals, named Zebsi, admitted to carrying out DDoS attacks and said, 'I regret my actions and will not be involved in any more DDoS attacks.' The apology referenced the 'harm and damage' caused to streamers, other players, and Epic Games. The other individual, known as Mirrored, admitted to cheating in tournaments and distributing cheat software. In his apology, Mirrored stated, 'I'll face legal action if I sell or distribute cheats again.' His post gained over 1.5 million views on X and drew reactions from users and groups, including the Anti-cheat Police Department. This follows previous legal action by Epic Games in June, where a cheater was ordered to pay $175,000 in damages. Epic Games continues to enforce strict measures against cheating and cyber attacks within Fortnite.

Fortnite refund: How can you get yours after FTC announces $126m settlement, find out full process

Fortnite players who were wrongly charged for unwanted in-game purchases are set to receive a share of a $126 million refund this week, following a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The refunds stem from a $245 million agreement reached between the FTC and Fortnite's developer, Epic Games, over allegations of deceptive online practices that led to players, including minors, being tricked into making unauthorised purchases. FTC initially announced the settlement in December 2022, marking it as the largest refund the agency had ever issued in a gaming industry case. The settlement follows accusations that Epic Games misled consumers into making in-game transactions they otherwise wouldn't have made. FTC also announced it will issue nearly 970,000 checks and PayPal payments to those who submitted valid claims, following an earlier round of payments in December 2022 totalling over $22 million. For Fortnite players seeking compensation, the FTC has set up a dedicated website where they can confirm their eligibility for a refund. The original deadline for filing claims was February 14, but the agency has now extended it to July 9. Players who have already submitted a claim after February 14 need not take further action. Those receiving checks are advised to cash them within 90 days, while PayPal refunds must be accepted within 30 days. To apply for a refund, players will need their claim number or Epic Account ID. For those under 18, a parent or guardian will need to submit the claim on their behalf. Players on social media have shared screenshots, confirming their refund amounts. More people are reporting they're starting to receive their payments! I totally forgot about mine lmao — Frugal Season (@Frugalszn) June 25, 2025 This action follows a separate 2023 agreement in which Epic Games was fined $275 million for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule, adding further scrutiny to the company's practices.
