Fortnite player fined $175,000 and permanently banned after Epic Games lawsuit

Express Tribune25-06-2025
Epic Games has won a significant legal battle against a Fortnite player accused of using cheating software and hardware during a competitive tournament.
On June 25, 2025, a judge ruled in favor of Epic after the defendant failed to respond to the lawsuit, ordering the player to pay $175,000 in damages. The funds will be donated to charity, as confirmed by the company.
The lawsuit was originally filed on December 18, 2024, after the cheater was caught exploiting Fortnite's systems during a competitive event. According to Epic Games, the player used multiple accounts and advanced cheating tools in an attempt to avoid detection but was ultimately exposed by their anti-cheat measures.
THIS JUST IN: The Judge ruled in our favor after the cheater ignored our lawsuit. The player is required to pay $175,000 and we'll donate what we collect to charity. They are also banned from playing Fortnite forever. https://t.co/on0dYWBdq4 — Fortnite Competitive (@FNCompetitive) June 25, 2025
'Cheating has no place in Fortnite and we're doing everything we can to stop it, including legal action,' Epic said in an earlier statement. The ruling not only imposes a financial penalty but also enforces a lifetime ban on the player from Fortnite.

The gaming community has largely praised the decision, calling it a strong deterrent for future cheaters in competitive gaming. Content creator NickEh30 and gaming news outlet ModernWarzone both shared support on social media.
This marks another instance of Epic Games leveraging the legal system to uphold competitive integrity. In a similar case earlier this year, another player was banned and had their prize money redirected to charity after cheating in the 2023 Fortnite Championship Grand Finals.

Epic Games CEO criticises report on Disney mode delays in Fortnite as 'BS'

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has strongly denied recent claims in The Wall Street Journal that Disney has delayed the development of Fortnite's upcoming Disney mode due to slow decision-making by the entertainment giant. The WSJ report suggested internal frustration within Epic over the pace of Disney sign-offs, stating the new mode would not launch until 'fall 2026 at the earliest.' Executives were said to be unhappy with delays caused by multiple layers of approval. Responding on social media, Sweeney labelled the anonymous remark as 'BS.' He wrote: 'The speed of Disney and Epic collaborations like Darth Vader has been awesome and is around 10x the ordinary speed of media company dealings in this business. We even provided a statement to the writer… but they chose not to print it.' The Disney collaboration was first revealed in February 2024. Details remain limited, although concept art has hinted at a virtual Disneyland-style environment featuring themed hubs. The specific gameplay elements of this mode remain undisclosed. The WSJ noted that Josh D'Amaro, head of Disney Parks and Resorts, is overseeing the project and has reportedly spent time with Sweeney during development. The article also raised concerns over legal ownership of fan-created content involving Disney characters, such as in-game dances. Epic's partnership with Disney has already resulted in extensive Fortnite content, including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and classic animation skins. One recent initiative tested an AI-powered Darth Vader character who could interact via generative speech, engaging with over 10 million players despite early moderation issues. Fortnite is entering its next season, featuring a mutated biome and guest appearances from Halo characters.

Disney weighs AI future in film production amid legal risks and union pushback

Disney is cautiously navigating how to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its film and television production, balancing innovation with concern over its legacy and legal exposure. A plan to use AI to create a digital double of Dwayne Johnson for the live-action Moana remake—with his cousin serving as a body double and AI-generated facial replacement—was ultimately shelved over concerns about intellectual property ownership, privacy, and union backlash. The company has since taken a conservative approach: CEO Bob Iger and legal chief Horacio Gutierrez emphasize that while AI holds transformative potential, it must not compromise the integrity of Disney's classic characters and storytelling. Disney has also sued AI firms—such as Midjourney—for using its copyrighted characters without permission, underscoring its commitment to protecting intellectual property rights. Projects like Tron: Ares, originally targeted for AI integration, were abandoned due to the risk of negative publicity and ongoing negotiations with actors' and writers' unions. At the same time, Disney is cautiously exploring AI use elsewhere, including personalized Disney+ clips and an AI version of Darth Vader in Fortnite, consistent with the company's ongoing $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games. Internally, Disney has established an AI review committee that vets any use of generative tools in corporate workflows; requests must be approved within 48 hours. Yet employees and creative partners remain wary about the implications for labor, copyright, and creative control. Disney is not alone. The broader Hollywood ecosystem is under pressure from lawsuits, union scrutiny, and regulatory uncertainty as studios wrestle with how to harness AI without undermining artistic authenticity. With stakeholders divided between innovation and preservation, Disney's actions reflect a cautious path forward in a rapidly evolving landscape.
