Steelers' Cory Trice, Calvin Anderson receive troubling injury news

USA Today4 days ago
The bad news keeps on coming — as Steelers HC Mike Tomlin shared a health update on CB Cory Trice and OT Calvin Anderson.
Following training camp practice on Saturday, Tomlin briefed reporters on the availability of Trice and Anderson — both of whom suffered injuries at Friday Night Lights practice. According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, the Steelers head coach shared that their injuries were considered more serious than day-to-day — hardly the news fans want to hear a week out from preseason.
Trice is dealing with a hamstring injury — which is both unfortunate in timing and very concerning for his odds of surviving the final roster cuts. Anderson figures to serve as the Steelers' top backup offensive tackle — and his soft tissue injury could force Pittsburgh to bring in additional offensive linemen to bolster depth.
We at Steelers Wire will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available — and hopefully both Steelers recover in time to put a stamp on what's been an exciting training camp so far.

Anthony Hernandez 'still not really sold' on Khamzat Chimaev before UFC 319

Anthony Hernandez thinks Khamzat Chimaev is still unproven heading into his first UFC title fight. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Chimaev is the betting favorite heading into his fight with Du Plessis, who holds wins over former champions Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland. However, Hernandez isn't ready to buy into the undefeated phenom's hype just yet. "I think DDP is going to shock the world again," Hernandez told MMA Junkie. "He's a big, tough, awkward motherf*cker, and I'm still not really sold on Khamzat. I understand he's good, and he's dangerous, yada yada, but he's kind of fought all small guys who have come up. (Kamaru) Usman gave him a run for his money off the couch, so how does he do with somebody that's like a real 85'er?" Hernandez (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) will look to enter the middleweight title picture when he takes on Roman Dolidze (15-3 MMA, 9-3) in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 72 (ESPN, ESPN+) main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Will Aaron Rodgers & DK Metcalf mesh in Pittsburgh?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice, NFL writer Charles McDonald and fantasy analyst Matt Harmon discuss how the Steelers' new quarterback-receiver pairing will fit together for the yellow and gold this season. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The Pittsburgh Steelers went 10-7 last year, of course. They finished with a 10-7 record. You guys know who the head coach is? It's Mike Tomlin. This is what they do. They added a guy at quarterback named Aaron Rodgers, added DK Metcalf, traded for him, and got rid of George Pickens. But the Steelers' offense, Charles, I'm gonna let you have the first take. I'm gonna let you bat lead off here. What are you focusing on with the Pittsburgh Steelers offense? It all just depends on how Aaron Rodgers and Arthur Smith mesh, because Aaron Rodgers is 40. He doesn't really move. Last year they had Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. I just don't understand how the marriage is supposed to work from a quarterback to play caller standpoint. I think the talent is just good enough. Maybe they could have a watchable season on offense, but if DK Metcalf gets hurt, even a little, it's 2025. I'm about to say if Robert Woods gets hurt, you're in a bad spot. DK Metcalf is coming off his worst season. Like he has a 10th percentile success rate versus zone coverage last year. He was not great at separating against man coverage, which is not as good as usual, and his contested catch rate was a career low. So, again, I don't even love the idea of trading a guy coming off his worst season and paying him $33 million a year, and now Terry McLaurin is pissed about that because he's been a better player throughout the course of his career, the whole thing. But I was like, all right, if this is gonna work for the Steelers, it's because one thing DK can do is run those deep and breaking routes. That Arthur Smith loves to do with his ex-receiver, but we have a guy that charts quarterbacks, Corey Kennon, reception perception. He noted that Rodgers' worst throws last year from an accuracy standpoint were digs and posts. And I read that in his write-up. I went and charted Garrett Wilson and the like, they didn't have him run a lot of digs because of course the Rodgers offense does not run a lot of digs. It's go routes, slant routes, and those little access throws and stuff. Consistently, the ball is behind Garrett Wilson when he's running open in the middle of the field. This is chunk 2 of 2. Please provide the next chunk to continue. field, so I don't even know if the thing that DK Metcalf would fit best into this offense doing from a past game standpoint, is really what Rogers does well at this stage. So, I just, I don't know, there's a, there's a lot of question marks for a team, um, where again, it's just it's always question marks on this side of the ball. I don't really see a lot of solutions here. Close

College Football Fans Are Loving Roger Goodell's 'RedZone' Announcement

College Football Fans Are Loving Roger Goodell's 'RedZone' Announcement originally appeared on The Spun. Earlier this Wednesday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made a comment that should excite every single college football in the country. It was confirmed Tuesday that ESPN acquired the NFL Network in a massive media deal. As part of this agreement, the Worldwide Leader In Sports has the linear rights to "RedZone." Some fans are worried ESPN will make massive changes to this fan-favorite channel, but Goodell confirmed that the NFL will produce "RedZone" for the 2025 season. "It'll continue to be produced right here in this building," Goodell said, via On3. "It will be the NFL RedZone. I don't think fans will see any difference to that." Goodell then teased the possibility of college football having its very own "RedZone" channel because of this ESPN deal. "Obviously, in the context of that, though, ESPN purchased the RedZone name, and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things, and I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports. That's something that they now own and have the ability to do that. But as far as Red Zone, NFL Red Zone, there won't be any changes for our plans." For the most part, college football fans are excited about the possibility of a "RedZone" channel for college football. It would allow fans to check in on multiple games at once. "All previous misgivings will be forgiven if this becomes a reality," a social media user commented. "I speak for America when I say this is a 10/10 idea," one fan said. "This is what every college football fan loves to hear," another fan wrote. "This sounds amazing, but who will host it? That will determine if I want to watch it," another social media user replied. Considering the 2025 college football season will kick off later this month, it's unlikely a "RedZone" channel is made for Week 1. That being said, ESPN could end up producing this show in 2026.
