Crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo arrested at airport
Henry Mamothame, from the National Prosecuting Authority's investigative directorate, confirmed the arrest to TimesLIVE.
'Yes, he has been arrested, but we cannot provide details until he and others appear in court,' Mamothame said.
Police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola also confirmed in an interview on Newzroom Afrika that Khumalo has been arrested.
'He called me and informed me he has been arrested, but I have no details of why he has been arrested,' Masemola said.
Other police sources, who cannot be named, told TimesLIVE the arrest was linked to corruption.
Ian Cameron, chair of parliament's police portfolio committee, also confirmed the arrest.
'The arrest of SAPS divisional commissioner for crime intelligence Lt-Gen Khumalo sends more shock waves through the policing community in South Africa. Just a few weeks after another general (Lushaba) was also arrested,' Cameron said.
'This development again raises serious concern about the integrity and leadership crisis in SAPS senior management. I repeat: a skills audit, integrity audit and urgent review of management is essential.'
Earlier Cameron said the 'imminent arrest' of Khumalo relates to 'serious allegations, including irregular appointments and the looting of SAPS crime intelligence slush funds'.

Ian Cameron, DA MPs injured in brutal ‘targeted' attack
Ian Cameron injured in smash and grab. Images via X: @iancameron23 Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson Ian Cameron has recounted a horrific smash and grab he experienced alongside two fellow Democratic Alliance (DA) MPs in Cape Town's Philippi township. The trio – which includes Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell – were ambushed after visiting a nearby SAPS training academy. IAN CAMERON AND OTHER DA MPS INJURED IN CAPE TOWN SMASH AND GRAB On Tuesday, 19 August, Ian Cameron and fellow DA MPs Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell escaped a smash-and-grab after conducting official duties. ADVERTISEMENT The trio were returning from a surprise inspection of the SAPS Philippi Training Academy when their vehicle was ambushed. A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. ADVERTISEMENT According to authorities, the motive for the attack is not yet known. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. 'We again call on the Minister of Police to properly resource SAPS in crime-ridden areas such as Philippi.' Ian Cameron is lucky to be alive after a horrific smash and grab. Image via X: @iancameron23 Parliament also denounced the criminal attack. 'The Presiding Officers express deep concern, noting that such shocking acts of criminality not only endanger the lives of elected representatives and members of the public but also undermine Parliament's constitutional duty to hold organs of state accountable through oversight', read its statement. HELEN ZILLE'S NARROW ESCAPE Ian Cameron isn't the only DA member to fall victim to a brutal attack. In 2003, Helen Zille narrowly escaped death when her Corsa was shot at in an attempted hijacking in Khayelitsha. At the time of the attack, Helen was driving home one evening after doing constituency work in the informal settlement. The bullet struck the back of her car seat, with Helen claiming that the springs of the cushion likely shielded her. DO YOU THINK IAN CAMERON'S SMASH AND GRAB WAS A RANDOM OR TARGETED ATTACK? A group of traffic officers and other officials joined forces this week to bring relief to a Khutsong care facility. On August 18, traffic officers from the Merafong City Local Municipality, Rand West, and Mogale City were joined by members of the Gauteng Traffic Police, SAPS, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and officials from the Department of Correctional Services for a special outreach programme. The group gathered at the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home in Khutsong, also known as the Zani Home, as part of the Western Corridor Women's Month celebrations. They donated food, toiletries, and blankets to the facility, which provides care for severely disabled residents, many of whom have no other place to call home. Located near the Khutsong Community Hall, the Zanele Mtshali Disability Home has long served as a vital refuge for the vulnerable. The donation was welcomed as a meaningful gesture of solidarity and community support.

Cameron said he acted quickly and in self-defence to prevent further harm to his colleagues. The DA condemned the attack and reiterated the urgent need for improved policing in high-crime areas. DA Chief Whip George Michalakis said: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. We again call on the Minister of Police to properly resource SAPS in crime-ridden areas such as Philippi.' Michalakis praised the prompt response of the City of Cape Town Metro, the provincial government, police, and emergency medical services, highlighting that their quick intervention helped prevent further harm to the MPs. Western Cape provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile confirmed that police received a report of the attack and that two people were injured. 'The ambulance was called at the scene. Our teams will get to the bottom of it,' he said. 'In most smash-and-grab incidents, the motive is robbery, hijacking, or theft out of a motor vehicle. At this stage, we do not know what was stolen.' Community leaders condemned the attack. Dumisani Qwebe called it a 'wake-up call' and urged anyone with information to come forward. He noted that the area usually has police visibility and CCTV coverage, which may assist in identifying the suspects. 'That intersection was not so bad, and we are surprised because there is always police visibility, and now we must make sure that it is always monitored. 'There is a CCTV camera, and hopefully we will find something from it.' The DA reiterated that policing is a national function and stressed that adequate resourcing of police stations in crime-ridden communities is vital to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of all South Africans.
