Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad and more Indian cities see rise in Covid cases: Here's what health experts want you to know
Health officials are keeping a close watch as Covid-19 cases slowly rise in parts of India, at a time when countries like Hong Kong and Singapore are also seeing more infections.
Although the total number of cases is still low compared to earlier waves, cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Ahmedabad have seen a noticeable increase.
Mumbai Sees Cluster of Cases
Mumbai has reported 95 new Covid-19 cases in May, according to the Maharashtra health department. This is a sharp jump, as the state has recorded just 106 cases since January.

Pune on Alert, But No Active Cases
In Pune, the local authorities have kept 50 beds ready at Naidu Hospital, just in case. Right now, there are no active Covid-19 patients in the city's public hospitals.
'We had just one patient in May, an 87-year-old from Manjari, who has fully recovered,' said Dr Nina Borade, head of health at Pune Municipal Corporation. She said testing is not happening in civic hospitals at the moment, as they are waiting for new guidelines from the Centre.
Tamil Nadu Reports Rise, Surgeries Delayed
In Tamil Nadu, 12 new cases were found in Puducherry. In Chennai, doctors say more people with fevers are now testing positive for Covid-19 rather than the flu.
Some hospitals have even delayed major surgeries, like organ transplants and heart operations, to avoid infection risk.
'We are seeing more Covid-19 now,' said Dr Subramaniam Swaminathan, a specialist at Gleneagles Healthcity. 'Two weeks ago, most of our samples were flu. Now, it's mostly Covid.'
Dr T S Selvavinayagam, the state's public health director, said there is no reason to panic but asked people to stay careful in crowded places. 'Covid-19 never went away. It's still around, with ups and downs,' he said.
New Cases in Karnataka and Gujarat
Karnataka has 16 active cases, according to Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.
In Gujarat, seven cases were found in Ahmedabad in just one day, surprising for a city that has seen only one case per month for a year.
All seven patients are recovering at home, and their samples have been sent for further testing.

In India, most new cases are mild, with no deaths or ICU cases so far in this recent rise.
Doctors are advising older people, pregnant women, and those with health issues to be extra careful, wear masks in closed spaces and wash hands often. They also suggest getting a flu shot to avoid co-infections.

Karnataka reports two more Covid-related deaths, pushing tally to 9
Bengaluru, Karnataka registered two more Covid-related deaths on Saturday, pushing the tally to nine in the state, said health department officials. A 46-year-old man from Ballari and a 78-year-old man from Belagavi, who were admitted for Severe Acute Respiratory Infections, passed away on June 5. Both had tested positive for Covid-19, said a bulletin from the health department. On Saturday, the state reported 57 new cases , chalking the cumulative tally for the year to 894. PTI

Active Covid cases in India cross 6,000-mark
New Delhi, India's active Covid case tally crossed the 6,000 mark with 769 new infections being reported in the last 48 hours, according to the Union health ministry data released on Sunday. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi, according to the ministry. Due to the rising Covid cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources had said. There are 6,133 active Covid cases in India , and six more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, the ministry said. Official sources have maintained that most cases are mild and managed under home care. Since January this year, 65 deaths have been reported in the country. There were a total of 257 active patients in the country on May 22. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the Covid situation and preparedness measures. Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories were part of the meeting. Official sources on June 4 said state and district surveillance units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme are closely monitoring Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).
