Rishi Kapoor was naked in a scene in Bobby.
In the early 1970s, Bobby broke new ground in many ways — from introducing fresh faces like Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia to showcasing bold cinematic moments. One such scene, where a young Rishi appears nude while drying his hair with a towel, left quite an impression at the time. Now, decades later, actress Aruna Irani has revisited that moment, revealing she was initially too shy to even be on set when it was filmed.
In a recent interview with Lehren Retro, Aruna shared that she hesitated to shoot the scene and had to be persuaded by the film's legendary director Raj Kapoor, who also happened to be Rishi's father.
'I had said no initially. He comes out nude and dries out his hair with a towel. He gave that shot. I told Raj ji that I can't do it. He said, 'Don't look there naa, don't see wrong things, see right things'. I did it at last," Aruna revealed.
The story didn't end there. Aruna recalled that much later, when she worked with Rishi Kapoor again, he brought up her earlier hesitation in a light-hearted exchange.
'I was then working with Chintu ji in Ravi Malhotra's film. He said, 'Aruna ji, mujhe aapse ek baat poochni hai. You objected a lot in that scene, but nanga toh mujhe hona tha, aap kyun object kar rahe the (Aruna ji, I have to ask you something. I was the one who was naked in the shot, why were you objecting)?'" she recounted.
She went on to admit that his question made her reflect. 'I told him that I was feeling shy. I was thinking and getting restless to ask you that why you were feeling shy when I was the one naked in that scene. But, he was actually right," she concluded.
Directed by Raj Kapoor, Bobby was more than just a love story — it captured youthful rebellion, class divide, and a new style of filmmaking for its time. While the film became a blockbuster and remains a cultural classic, stories like Aruna Irani's add a fascinating glimpse into the off-camera experiences that shaped it. Shreyanka Mazumdar

Aruna Irani reveals she battled breast cancer twice, refused chemo for work: ‘How would I shoot if I lose hair'

Veteran actor Aruna Irani recently opened up about a major health scare from the past. She revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, both times choosing to battle the disease in private. Aruna said the first diagnosis came after she fell unwell while working, which later turned out to be cancer. Speaking to Lehren, Aruna recalled how she sensed something was wrong while on a shoot. "Aise hi ek din shooting kar rahi thi, pata nahi mujhe kaise pata laga par maine bola 'Mujhe kuch lag raha hai' (One day, I was shooting as usual. I don't know how, but I just felt something and said, 'I feel like something's wrong')," she said. Upon consulting a doctor, she was told the lump was minor. However, she insisted on having it removed immediately. Although doctors recommended chemotherapy, the actor declined, fearing it would affect her appearance and impact her acting career. "Then the doctor said you will have to take a pill, and I chose that as I was working. How would I shoot if I lose my hair?" she said. Aruna Irani's cancer returned in 2020, right before the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, she decided to follow the doctor's advice and undergo chemotherapy. 'Meri hi galti thi, as pehle maine chemotherapy nahi lee this (It was my fault because I did not opt for chemotherapy the first time). This time around, I took it,' she shared. She said that by then, chemotherapy had become more advanced. Although Aruna experienced some hair loss, it grew back with time. 'Still, you lose a bit of your hair, but woh jaldi aa bhi jaate hai (it grows back quickly)," she added. In addition to her battle with cancer, Aruna was diagnosed with diabetes at 60. At one point, doctors even told her that her kidneys had failed. Aruna Irani made her acting debut at a young age in the 1961 film Ganga Jumna. Later, she appeared in the 1962 film Anpadh. She has acted in more than 500 films in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati.
