Argentina's President Milei denies crypto fraud allegations

Saudi Gazette19-02-2025

BUENOS AIRES — Argentine President Javier Milei has denied promoting a newly launched cryptocurrency which collapsed shortly after he mentioned it in a social media post on Friday. The cryptocoin $Libra quickly rose in value before nosediving, causing severe losses for the majority of people who had invested in it.A judge will now determine if the president should face fraud charges over the incident. On Monday, Milei said he had acted "in good faith" and dismissed investors' complaints, comparing their actions to people who gamble: "If you go to a casino and lose money, what's there to complain about when you knew the risks?"President Milei spoke about the $Libra incident in an interview with Argentine TV channel Todo Noticias on Monday, after a weekend during which he had stayed unusually quiet on social media. He insisted that his post on X, which contained a link to a site selling $Libra, did not constitute an endorsement."I didn't promote it, I merely shared it," he told Todo Noticias' Jonny Viale.Milei's post, which he deleted after just a few hours, drew heavy criticism not just from his political rivals in Argentina but also from those who had invested in the cryptocurrency. Some have argued the $Libra launch resembled a "rug pull" — where promoters draw in buyers, only to stop trading activity and make off with the money raised from sales. The presidential office insisted that Milei was in no way involved in the development of $Libra and announced that the Anti-Corruption Office would determine if the president had acted improperly.Milei himself defended deleting his post, saying that at the time he did not know "the details of the project and after learning about it, I decided not to continue promoting it".Opposition politicians, however, have not been placated by the statements, threatening to start impeachment proceedings against Milei. While political analysts point out that the opposition is unlikely to get the votes needed for an impeachment trial to go ahead, the scandal threatens to divert Milei's attention away from his radical reform agenda.A federal judge has been tasked with deciding whether fraud allegations brought against the president by a number of plaintiffs should go ahead. In his TV interview, Milei appeared combative, stressing that he had "nothing to hide".He also said that those who had invested in $Libra had done so "voluntarily" and knew of the risks.

Myanmar guerrillas claim rare downing of junta jet

Myanmar anti-coup guerrillas claimed to shoot down a junta jet on Tuesday, declaring a rare victory over the air force which has kept them at bay in a grinding civil war. The military swiftly denied their claim, saying the plane crashed near the central village of Min Taing Pin around midday because of 'sudden engine failure' while on a 'practice flight.' Myanmar has been consumed by civil war since the military ousted a democratic government in 2021, but analysts say its air force backed by Russia and China has allowed it to fend off a myriad of lesser-equipped opposition groups. The military and some of its adversaries have pledged a truce this month as the country continues to recover from March's devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake which killed nearly 3,800 people. But the People's Liberation Army (PLA) -- the armed wing of a Myanmar communist group -- said its fighters downed the plane after four days of fierce conflict in central Sagaing region, one of the areas worst-hit by the quake. 'Our fighters were able to shoot down an attack jet today. This is a first in the history of the PLA,' said a spokeswoman. Zaw Tun, a member of the local anti-coup People's Defense Force, said they were fighting alongside the PLA when 'our joint forces used machine guns and shot it down.' A local administrator from the rebel-held area, Zaw Htet, said two planes were returning from a bombing run when one was hit as both 'flew very low on the way back.' Images on social media, which AFP was not able to verify, showed opposition fighters travelling towards a flaming wreck in an area littered with metal debris including what appeared to be a piece of landing gear. But the junta information team said in a statement its own security forces had seized the crash site and 'relevant authorities are continuing investigation of the cause of the engine failure.' While junta jets have kept opposition forces largely confined to the Myanmar's fringes, they have also been accused of striking civilian targets with impunity. A junta air strike on a school in Sagaing region in May killed at least 22 people, including 20 children, according to witnesses.

Le Pen, Orban Lambast EU at Far-right Rally in France

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Monday launched scathing attacks on the EU at a rally in France aimed at flaunting the unity and strength of the anti-immigration wing of European politics. Aimed at marking one year since Le Pen's National Rally (RN) crushed opponents to win their best-ever vote share in European elections, the get-together in Mormant-sur-Vernisson south of Paris brought together far-right leaders from across Europe. The mood was buoyant and confident in the wake of Donald Trump's return to the White House earlier this year and strong election results across the continent. Orban, reveling in his self-proclaimed status as the "black sheep of the EU" and "Brussels' nightmare", likened European migration policy to "an organized exchange of populations to replace the cultural base" of the continent. Boasting of having been able to "push back migrants" in his country, even if it meant incurring sanctions from Brussels, Orban told the several thousands present: "We will not let them destroy our cities." Le Pen, in her speech, described the European Union as a "graveyard of politically unfulfilled promises" and termed it "woke and ultra-liberal". "We don't want to leave the table. We want to finish the game and win, to take power in France and in Europe and give it back to the people," she said. Her party previously backed France's exit from the EU. But now it preaches European reform while remaining a member as Le Pen seeks to make the party electable and shake off the legacy of her late father Jean-Marie Le Pen. Other attendees included Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the League party Matteo Salvini, the leader of Spain's Vox party Santiago Abascal and former Czech premier Andrej Babis. They are all part of the Patriots for Europe faction in the European parliament, one of no less than three competing far-right factions in the chamber. Salvini meanwhile described migration as a "threat" to Europe. "The threat to our children is an invasion of illegal immigrants, mainly Islamists, financed and organized in the silence of Brussels," he affirmed from the podium, calling on European "patriots" to "work together" to "take back control of the destiny and future of Europe." In a sign of the controversy over the meeting, some 4,000 people from the left, hard left and trade unions protested in the nearby town of Montargis, according to organizers, vowing to "build resistance" and proclaiming the far-right leaders were "not welcome". "You have here the worst of the racist and xenophobic European far-right that we know only too well," said French hard-left MEP Manon Aubry. The meeting also comes less than two years ahead of watershed presidential elections in France where President Emmanuel Macron, who has long promoted himself as a bulwark against the far-right, cannot stand again and the RN sees its best ever chance of taking power. But it is far from certain if Le Pen will stand for a fourth time as her conviction earlier this year in a fake jobs scandal disqualifies her from standing from public office. She has appealed. But waiting in the wings is her protege and RN party leader Jordan Bardella, 29, who would stand if Le Pen was ineligible. Bardella, who polls have shown would still be set to win the first round of presidential elections if he stands, is taking care to project his image including a long TV interview with star anchor Karine Le Marchand aimed at showing his softer side. "We reject the Europe of Ursula von der Leyen," Bardella told the rally, referring to the chief of the EU Commission. "We reject the Europe of Macron... We represent the rebirth of a true Europe." As well as Le Pen's legal limbo, the contours of the French 2027 presidential election remain largely unclear, with center-right former prime minister Edouard Philippe the only major player to clearly state he will stand. Orban urged the RN to emerge triumphant from the elections. "Without you, we will not be able to occupy Brussels (...) We will not be able to save Hungary from the Brussels guillotine," said Orban.
