Donald Trump's Truth Social launches Perplexity-powered AI search to take on Google
Truth Social, the social media platform backed by US President Donald Trump, has launched a new artificial intelligence-powered search engine named Truth Search AI, as part of its latest effort to challenge the dominance of Big Tech, especially Google. The beta version of the tool went live on Wednesday, with Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announcing that it has partnered with San Francisco-based Perplexity, a rising AI startup that offers an 'answer engine' rather than a traditional search platform. 'Powered by Perplexity, a software and AI company dedicated to providing direct, contextually accurate answers with transparent citations, Truth Search AI is intended to enhance the Truth Social platform and exponentially increase the amount of information available to its users,' Trump Media said in a press feature is currently available on the web version of Truth Social, with plans to expand to iOS and Android apps the launch mirrors a broader trend of social media platforms embracing AI, including Elon Musk's Grok chatbot on X and Meta's AI assistant on Instagram and WhatsApp, Truth Search AI has drawn attention for the political context surrounding its rollout. Meanwhile, The National, a UAE state-owned outlet, noted that answers generated by the tool frequently rely on conservative-leaning media such as Fox News and Epoch Times. However, tests by 404Media suggested the tool is not entirely one-sided. In response to questions about the US economy and Trump-era tariffs, the AI reportedly offered surprisingly critical responses, citing economic slowdowns and negative impacts of tariffs. Axios reported that the version of Perplexity used by Truth Social pulls from a narrower set of sources compared to Perplexity's public-facing version. A Perplexity spokesperson confirmed that Truth Social is using its Sonar API, a developer tool that allows customisation — including source Perplexity declined to disclose financial terms of the deal, the company clarified that Truth Social, like other clients, has full control over how the tool is set up. The Sonar API, launched earlier this year, includes features specifically designed to let clients filter or prioritise sources, a top user request, according to the partnership comes at a time when AI is playing a growing role in US policy and tech development. President Trump has made AI a priority in his administration, issuing an executive order earlier this year to remove barriers to American AI leadership. Meanwhile, Perplexity has also attracted criticism over its data practices. The BBC, Forbes, and Dow Jones have all accused the company of copying or republishing material without permission. Perplexity has denied the allegations, claiming they stem from a fundamental misunderstanding of how AI and the internet work.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Trump Doubles Tariff On Indian Goods; Amitabh Kant Calls It 'Once In A Generation Opportunity'
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has escalated trade tensions with India by increasing tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, up from the 25 percent announced just last month. The move is meant to penalize New Delhi for what Trump claims is its continued purchase of oil and military equipment from Russia. While the decision has raised concerns over its potential impact on trade and Indian exporters, former G20 Sherpa and ex-NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant is viewing the situation through a different lens. According to him, this crisis could serve as a major turning point for India. "Trump has provided us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to take the next big leap on reforms. Crisis must be fully utilised," Kant wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Trump has provided us a once in a generation opportunity to take the next big leap on reforms. Crisis must be fully utilised. — Amitabh Kant (@amitabhk87) August 6, 2025 The initial 25 percent tariff was announced by Trump on July 30. At that time, he acknowledged India as a "friend" of the US but also issued a stern warning regarding its reliance on Russian energy and defense supplies. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country. Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE - ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!" The additional 25 percent tariff, bringing the total to 50 percent, was formally announced by Trump on Wednesday evening. The initial duty comes into effect today, August 7, at 9:30 am IST. The additional 25 percent levy will be implemented 21 days from now. How 50% Tariff Will Impact Indian Exports The steep tariff hike means a significant increase in the cost of exporting Indian goods to the U.S., potentially making them less competitive in the American market. Most Indian exports will now face duties of 50 percent or higher. Key sectors impacted include Shrimps, Organic chemicals, Carpets, Textiles and apparel (knitted and woven), Gems and jewellery, Steel, aluminium, copper, Machinery and mechanical appliances, Furniture and bedding. Additionally, vehicles exported from India will now face a 26 percent tariff, and petroleum products will be taxed at 6.9 percent. As the new tariffs take effect, India's policymakers and businesses are watching closely to gauge the economic fallout, while some, like Amitabh Kant, see it as a chance to push for much-needed structural reforms.

Stung by denial of berth, Rajgopal Reddy holds secret parleys with DKS
Hyderabad: Even as the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues remained in Delhi as part of 'Chalo Delhi' campaign, the meeting between Karnataka Dy CM D K Shivakumar and MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy has sparked significant political interest back in the State. The meeting comes amidst latter's expressions of discontent with the Congress leadership and the CM A Revanth Reddy for their failure to give him cabinet berth. In the wake of the development, Shivakumar is also likely to meet with CM Revanth Reddy soon. The Munugode MLA and younger brother of R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy met Shivakumar in a private hotel on Wednesday. This meeting is being viewed as significant in light of Rajagopal Reddy's discontent within the party and the potential for internal discussions or even damage control efforts within the Congress in Telangana. During the meeting, the MLA reportedly reminded Shivakumar about a past promise of a position in the State cabinet, which he reiterated was a key reason for his return to the Congress party. He urged the Karnataka's Deputy CM to convey this issue to the party high command, expressing frustration over being overlooked for a cabinet berth despite earlier assurances. In recent days, Rajagopal Reddy, known for his outspoken stance, has upped his ante and has repeatedly criticised Revanth Reddy. He expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that even leaders who joined the party after him were given ministerial posts, while he was ignored. He even went as far as hinting at resignation from his MLA position, accusing the Congress high command of neglect. As the issue has raised considerable concerns within the party, the PCC's Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) also decided to invite the MLA for deliberations and to resolve the matter. Responding to the comments by Rajgopal Reddy, the chairman of DAC Mallu Ravi said that it was not appropriate for MLA to speak openly about the internal affairs of the party and expressed optimism that the party high command will resolve such issues. He said that he will meet Rajgopal Reddy and try to resolve the issue positively. Earlier during the day, as part of continuing his rant, the MLA has asked the CM as to what action the State government initiated against AP-based contractors involved in Kaleshwaram. Launching a direct attack, the MLA accused CM of delaying action under the guise of investigations and commissions.
