Mumbai|New Delhi: The two principal shareholders of Megha Engineering and Infrastructure (MEIL), the Reddy uncle-nephew duo, are finalising a family settlement, said people with knowledge of the matter. This will see PV Krishna Reddy buying out uncle Pamireddy Pitchi Reddy's controlling interest three decades after the two started their entrepreneurial journey with small pipes for municipalities. It's since become a $5-billion, privately held infrastructure conglomerate that's among the largest in the country, said the people in the know.Krishna Reddy, with a net worth of $2.2 billion as per Forbes, is in talks with financial institutions to raise as much as Rs 12,000-15,000 crore to buy out his uncle's 51% stake in the holding company. Krishna Reddy owns the remaining 49%.According to the people cited, the services of a former chief justice of India were used to finalise the terms of settlement, which has been in the works for over two years. These have now been formalised and the valuations agreed upon, they said. The deal has to be wrapped up by March 2027.Krishna Reddy is planning to raise part of the funds from private structured credit and special situation funds such as Kotak Alternate Asset Managers, Varde and Farallon. He's also in discussions with global banks such as Deutsche Bank.He aims to partly or fully monetise some assets to raise the residual financing. One such asset is a power transmission project in western Uttar Pradesh, for which offers have come from domestic infrastructure groups, said officials involved. The nephew expects to raise almost half the settlement amount—about Rs 7,000 crore—from the sale of the interstate transmission lines and the substation network.Negotiations have also been taking place with some of the largest global funds to divest the city gas unit. Megha City Gas Pvt Ltd is operational in 62 districts across eight states including Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. While the transmission network has been on the block, a deal is yet to be clinched, insiders said. Against a payment schedule for the Rs 15,000 crore settlement amount, only about Rs 1,000 crore has been paid so far.The operations and maintenance wing of Olectra Greentech, the only listed entity of the group, may also be hived off to raise funds, said the people cited. Megha Engineering is the promoter of the company that makes e-buses and composite polymer insulators with a 50% stake. Between July 2023 and February 2024, the stock of Olectra Greentech more than doubled in value, sending it to an all-time high of over Rs 2,200. The stock was down 45% from those levels at the Friday close.Krishna Reddy declined to comment. PP Reddy didn't respond to queries.Clinching the settlement was not easy, said the people cited, given that there was interest from one of the country's richest men—whose conglomerate is invested heavily in infrastructure—in the 51% stake of Reddy senior. According to people in the know, Krishna Reddy sought the aid of top political leaders to ward off this bid.The flamboyant uncle, PP to his friends, comes from humble origins in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. Within two years of starting the business, he roped in his nephew. After initial success in irrigation projects, the group diversified into natural gas distribution, roads, dams, tunnelling, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and hydrocarbons, among others. In 2006, the company's name was changed to the current one from Megha Engineering Enterprises.'Megha is a classic case study of the rise of the Telugu businessman under YSR Reddy's irrigation boom,' said the managing director of another Hyderabad-based diversified group, referring to the deceased chief minister of the undivided state. 'Like several of their peers in business and community, they started doing PWD (public works department) contracts only to become massive. It's a similar trajectory taken by other families that run GMR, IVRCL, Navayuga, NCC, Ramky etc. Several amassed enormous wealth but succumbed to debt pressures. Megha has only grown bigger.'This meteoric rise brought them into the national spotlight but also into regulatory and corporate crosshairs. Following the disclosure that Megha had bought electoral bonds worth Rs 966 crore, allegations of a quid pro quo for government contracts surfaced. The company has always denied any reciprocity.Krishna Reddy was responsible for expanding operations, acquiring companies in Italy for instance, said the people cited. This has helped the group expand in Asia, Africa and Latin America and form joint ventures such as the one with China's BYD for electric vehicles (EVs). However, the joint venture's plan to make EVs in India has been stuck for years due to Press Note 3, which mandates government approval for investments from countries that share a land border with India. This is specifically aimed at China due to the testy ties between the two.MEIL acquired the oil and gas division of the Trevi Group , which included Drillmec SpA and Petreven SpA (Italy) for 116.4 million euros in 2020. Drillmec is a global manufacturer of oil and gas drilling rigs and related equipment. It currently operates rigs in Venezuela and Mexico. One of the reasons for the uncle stepping aside is age, said people who know him.'PP is turning 70 soon and he wants to now retire and lead the good life,' said a long-time family friend. 'Krishna is firmly in the saddle and the family, instead of bickering, came to an understanding. There were initial differences in terms of valuations, but that is very common. Now Krishna is busy organising funds to fast-track the buyout. I will not rule out an IPO down the line as well. The asset sales will also help prune the vast portfolio.'MEIL's marquee project wins — the Zojila Road Tunnel , Char Dham Rail Tunnel, Thane Borivali twin tunnel project, Machilipatnam Port, Tuticorin Thermal Project , BKC bullet train terminal and Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project — have faced controversy and challenges by rivals.Last month, L&T took the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to the Supreme Court after its bid for the construction of a road tunnel between Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel Junction and an elevated road along the Thane-Ghodbunder corridor--key links in Mumbai's coastal road initiative--were rejected by the civic authority. The two high-value infrastructure projects worth Rs 14,000 crore had been awarded to MEIL. The controversy forced MMDRA to scrap the tender.

Madurai Kamaraj University college bank account frozen over PF arrears

MADURAI: The bank account of Madurai Kamaraj University College (MKUC) was frozen on August 6 (Wednesday) based on a request from the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) Madurai, allegedly over repeated delays in the payment of provident fund contributions. and levied a penalty of Rs 34.98 lakh on the institution on the same day. An EPFO (Madurai) official said a warning and a show-cause notice was issued in July. The college authorities sought time, but did not honour their commitment, the official said, adding that fresh notices were issued on Wednesday, following which the bank account was frozen. 'The institution delayed PF contributions on several instances during the last two-and-a-half years (between 2022 and July 2025). The deadline for the payment is the fifteenth of every month,' added the official. K Palanikumar, MKUC lecturer, claimed that the institution is yet to fully pay the PF contributions of many staff members who joined in 2019. After petitions and requests, the officials started collecting PF amount from the period of December 2023, instead of from 2019, he said. 'After complaints, we collected our total PF contribution for the period of 2019-2024. A total of 120 employees, paid a total of Rs 16 lakh as our contribution. But, college authorities did not pay their contributions,' he said. A source from the college said the institution has already paid Rs 13.43 lakh and around Rs 21.55 lakh is yet to be settled. 'The penalty is only related to the delay in the payments to the EPFO office. Since the penalty is huge, the college authorities have requested to settle the amount in instalments,' added the source. MKUC principal Dr B George said the issue would be resolved on Monday.

The man behind AU Small Finance Bank's entry into the big league: Sanjay Agarwal

The journey of Sanjay Agarwal, promoter and Managing Director & CEO of AU Small Finance Bank (AU SFB), which got an approval from the RBI to become a universal bank Thursday, entails a story of both resilience and determination that is reflective in the small finance bank's rising profile. It is the first 'small finance bank' to make it to the big league. At the heart of AU's extraordinary journey is Agarwal, whose story exemplifies India's enterprise ethos. In 1996, at just 26, the newly qualified Gold-medallist Chartered Accountant from Jaipur, a first-generation entrepreneur and cricket enthusiast, declined a conventional corporate career to start his own finance company with a singular belief that 'India's underserved and unbanked deserved dignified financial services'. Starting with no institutional capital and no inherited influence, Agarwal established a lending company focused on offering vehicle finance to small entrepreneurs across Rajasthan's heartland, the bank said. When he turned 25, Sanjay made the bold decision to return to Jaipur and lay the foundation for AU Financiers (India) Ltd, a small finance company aimed at providing loans for small vehicles. Sanjay, according to bank insiders, worked to gain the trust of local businessmen and investors, leveraging strategic partnerships and a keen focus on customer service to carve out a niche for AU Financiers in Rajasthan's financial landscape. AU's name originated from the Latin word 'aurum', which means gold. The real turning point in the business came in 2015 when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the Small Finance Bank (SFB) category to promote financial inclusion. AU Financiers, with its two-decade track record of making loans and collecting on them, was seen as well-positioned to take advantage of this opportunity. In 2017, AU Financiers transformed into AU Small Finance Bank, marking a significant milestone in Sanjay's entrepreneurial journey. Today, it's one of India's more valuable banks, with a market capitalisation of over Rs 55,000 crore, higher than many established public and private banks. 'We have made history by receiving in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India to transition into a universal bank. This milestone is a reaffirmation of our purpose, perseverance, and passion. AU is not just a bank – AU is a mission. At AU, we have lived this mission every day. Our journey has always gone beyond banking – it's about building a more inclusive, empowered, and enterprising India,' Agarwal said in a conference on Friday, a day after getting the licence from the RBI. 'This in-principle approval acknowledges not just our ability to grow, but to grow responsibly. It is a testament to AU's strength in reaching widely, integrity in serving wisely, and resilience to shine across economic cycles,' he said in Mumbai. The Agarwal family holds 21.4 per cent stake in the bank with Sanjay himself holding 15.73 per cent stake worth Rs 8,700 crore (nearly $1 billion). 'When I founded AU Financiers 29 years ago, I seized an incredible opportunity to decode India's remote and often unbanked areas, providing much-needed credit to these regions. A significant transformation occurred in 2017 when AU Financiers evolved into AU Small Finance Bank,' Agarwal wrote in his LinkedIn post. 'This evolution strengthened our reach and capability, enabling us to ignite belief and unlock the potential of everyone connected with us, thereby making a profound impact on a vast number of people,' he wrote in the post. At the time of commencing operations, AU SFB was the only asset financing non-bank financier to receive the coveted license from the RBI out of a pool of 72 applicants. Within the very first year of starting its banking operations, AU became a scheduled commercial bank. The same year, the bank came out with its IPO, which went on to become one of the major public listings of 2017 as the lender raised nearly Rs 2,000 crore. Since then, AU SFB has emerged as India's largest small finance bank, with a network of over 2,505 banking touchpoints across 21 states and 4 Union Territories, serving more than 1.16 crore customers with a workforce of around 53,000. As of June 2025, the bank has shareholders' funds of Rs 17,800 crore, deposits of Rs 1.28 lakh crore, a loan portfolio of Rs 1.18 lakh crore, with the balance sheet size at Rs 1.61 lakh crore. 'Coming from a humble background in Jaipur, if someone had told me that we would build the largest small finance bank in India, I would have found it hard to believe. Yet here we are—because I dared to dream and followed my passion. The results speak for themselves,' Agarwal said in his LinkedIn post. He is now gearing up to be in the big league, with his bank getting the coveted universal banking licence.
