PSG warm up for Champions League final with Cup title

Perth Now24-05-2025

Holders Paris Saint-Germain have cruised to a 3-0 win over Stade de Reims in the French Cup final, sealing a domestic treble for the second successive season, and preparing for next week's Champions League final in perfect style.
Luis Enrique's side had little trouble seeing off relegation battling Reims on Saturday, strolling to a 3-0 first half lead with Bradley Barcola netting twice in three minutes and Achraf Hakimi scoring two minutes before the break.
Reims were again pinned back in their own half after the interval by a dominant PSG, and while they couldn't find any further goals, a record-extending 16th French Cup win was never in any doubt at the Stade de France.
PSG, already Ligue 1 champions and French Super Cup winners, now aim to win the club their first Champions League trophy when they take on Inter Milan in Munich next Saturday to cap off what would be their greatest ever season.

Late drama as Spain reach Nations League final

Lamine Yamal scored a brace as Spain reached the Nations League final with an extraordinary 5-4 victory over France, putting them in prime position to seek a third title in as many years. Nico Williams smashed the opener in the 22nd minute and it was followed three minutes later by Mikel Merino drilling his shot home. Teenage sensation Yamal then converted a penalty in the 54th, Pedri netted a minute later while Yamal struck again in the 67th for the 2023 Nations League and Euro 2024 champions. France, who had trailed 4-0 after Pedri's goal, hit back from captain Kylian Mbappe in the 59th, also from the spot. Rayan Cherki then scored from a sensational volley in the 79th which was followed by an own goal by Dani Vivian in the 84th. Randal Kolo Muani scored in stoppage time to reduce the deficit to just one. The match was billed as a duel between Ballon d'Or contenders Yamal from Spanish champions Barcelona and Ousmane Dembele from Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Dembele had scored a hat-trick in Thursday's stadium as PSG won a crucial Champions League group game 4-1 against VfB Stuttgart, but came up empty-handed this time around - just like the other PSG players including Desire Doue. France certainly had further chances, as Theo Hernandez hit the crossbar with the score 0-0 and Dembele the post later on. But despite the late nerves La Roja were eventually more efficient as they prevailed like in the Euro 2024 semi-final they won 2-1. Spain will now face Portugal for the trophy on Sunday in Munich, pitting 17-year-old Yamal against 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the 2-1 winner against Germany in the other semi on Wednesday. Germany and France will play for third place in Stuttgart, also on Sunday.

Ronaldo strike leads Portugal to Nations League final

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again as Portugal came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semi-final. The 40-year-old Ronaldo captained Portugal and scored his 137th international goal five minutes after substitute Francisco Conceicao equalised with a blistering shot in the 63rd minute on Wednesday (Thursday AEST). Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany, while ending his "curse" against the country. The former Real Madrid star had lost each of the previous five games he'd played against Germany. Liverpool target Florian Wirtz had given the home team a 48th-minute lead with a perfectly placed header inside the right post, but Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made his changes count as he brought on Conceicao and Champions League winner Vitinha among the substitutes. Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium. Germany needed goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen at his best to prevent the visitors from scoring any more. PSG wing backs Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut. Conceicao only needed five minutes to make a mark with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like he wasn't there. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that. "It could have been more," Mendes said. France play Spain in Stuttgart on Thursday (Friday AEST) in the other semi-final.
