Downfall of Darren Day: What happened to the notorious lothario who dated Hollywood stars after brutally dumping mother of his child Suzanne Shaw as she battled Postnatal depression

Daily Mail27-04-2025
At the height of his fame actor, singer and TV personality Darren Day was one of UK's most well known faces after being catapulted to stardom as Phillip Schofield 's replacement in West End musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
He became a regular on the celeb party scene and gained a reputation as a ladies man, with numerous engagements including to future Hollywood stars Isla Fisher and Anna Friel, before settling down with Hear'Say's Suzanne Shaw, 13 years his junior.
However Darren's reputation and career took a major nose dive after he walked out on the singer and their seven-week old son Corey on Mother's Day in 2005, as she battled postnatal depression, reportedly uttering the phrase 'I don't do family.'
Speaking about it on Vanessa Feltz 's Channel 5 show this week, Suzanne, who also shares 10-year-old son Rafferty with partner Sam Greenfield, revealed that her ex 'pretty much went out to get a curry and didn't come back' and said the fact she developed postnatal depression was 'no surprise'.
Darren famously embarked on the romance with the singer while they were both engaged to other people. He later married Stephanie Dooley, who he eventually divorced in 2019, nine years after she took him back when he was caught philandering with ex Suzanne.
Darren, now 56, is these days is better known for his scandalous love life, his battle with drink and drugs as well as appearance on reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother, Come Dine with Me, and I'm A Celebrity.....Get Me Out Of Here.
However he does continue his work on stage, as well as a stint in Hollyoaks, and regularly tours the UK in musicals including appearances alongside current fiancée and fellow actor Sophie Ladds, after insisting his love rat days were behind him.
Darren mostly returned to musical Chicago where he will play Billy Flynn for show's in Wolverhampton, while ex Strictly star Kevin Clifton and West End actor Dan Burton perform it elsewhere around the country.
Darren, who also shares daughter Maddy, 18, and son Dalton Day, 19, with ex-wife Stephanie first began to rehabilitate his reputation with an appearance in 2016's Celebrity Big Brother saying he 'wanted the opportunity to show the public where I am now'.
He told Lorraine Kelly at the time: 'If you Google me now the dodgy stuff is further down! Now nice things are said in the playground.
'It's taken time to build up bridges again, the last decade – I've worked hard and it finally feels like all the hard work has paid off.
'My lifestyle changed, I don't drink, I even gave up smoking I try and be a good husband and father and be a good man.'
He later married Stephanie Dooley (pictured 2016) who he eventually divorced in 2019, nine years after she took him back when after he was caught philandering with ex Suzanne
In 2023 he admitted going 'cold turkey' from drink and drugs in the I'm A Celebrity Jungle, after appearing on the first series way back in 2002 where he was eliminated third.
Darren has been open about his substance addiction in the past - but has revealed for the first time he stopped using them abruptly when he entered the jungle and speaking on GMB alongside TV personality and I'm A Celeb co-star Christine Hamilton, Darren explained his difficult ordeal during his time on the show.
He said: 'I've been very candid with you this morning about being in recovery and stuff like that. 'I will level with you and I've never said this publicly before - but I went cold turkey [on I'm A Celebrity].'
Host Richard Madeley then asked: 'From drink, drugs or both?' to which Darren replied: 'Both - cocaine, the demon powder, and the demon drink.
'I literally went cold turkey in front of the whole country. I was smashed when I got on the plane to Australia.'
He also confessed: 'The main reason I did Big Brother was to try and redeem myself because I was so ashamed of Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.'
In April 2010 Darren was found guilty of his second drink-driving offence in two years and was banned from driving for five years.
He previously admitted he went on a week-long drugs binge which saw him not sleep, eat or change his clothes after he hit rock bottom during lockdown.
Darren said he barricaded himself in his bathroom and took '20 to 30 grams of cocaine' within the week after his company went bust and his work dried up as a result of the pandemic.
He said: 'I lost a week of my life. I did about 20 to 30 grams of cocaine. I kept going until it was gone. I sat at the top of the stairs and I sobbed like I've never sobbed before.'
Deciding to sort his life out, the former Celebrity Big Brother star called up pal Robbie Williams - who has faced his own demons in the past - who then put Darren in touch with his mental health team.
The singer and actor has always been open about his struggles with addiction in the past – stating he is 'lucky to be alive' after enduring 'dark days' of excessive cocaine and alcohol abuse.
Darren developed a crack addiction between 2001 and 2005, which he described as 'ridiculously intense', he explained how he was grateful that he didn't go down the route of taking heroin, but described smoking crack as his 'darkest days'.
In 2020 he took to X to record a heartfelt video to address the mental strain his lifestyle has had on him over the years.
Telling his followers: 'Since my stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house four years ago its well documented that I am in recovery/sobriety with issues around addiction. That I've spoken publicly about.
'Something I have never spoken about is my mental health issues. That changes as of today because I have become involved with a wonderful new charity: Its OK Not To Be OK.'
In 1994, Darren began a relationship with Anna Friel who was at the height of her UK fame amid her stint in Brookside, which lasted three years during which time he proposed.
Two weeks after dumping her, he started dating Coronation Street actress Tracy Shaw - whom he met while on tour with Summer Holiday in Manchester - giving her the £30,000 engagement ring meant for his ex.
After a stormy relationship, the pair split and Darren told of their cocaine-fuelled sex binges, before meeting former Home and Away star Isla, gushing: 'She's the first girl I've been in love with.' They too became engaged but split because of their 'hectic lifestyles'.
He enjoyed then brief flings with Joan Collins's daughter Tara Newley and Sophia Thierens.
WHAT IS POSTNATAL DEPRESSION?
Postnatal depression is a form of the mental-health condition that affects more than one in 10 women in the UK and US within a year of giving birth.
As many men can be affected as women, research suggests.
Many parents feel down, teary and anxious within the first two weeks of having a child, which is often called the 'baby blues'.
But if symptoms start later or last longer, they may be suffering from postnatal depression.
Postnatal depression is just as serious as others form of the mental-health disorder.
Symptoms include:
Persistent sadness
Lack of enjoyment or interest in the wider world
Fatigue
Insomnia
Struggling to bond with your baby
Withdrawing from others
Difficulty concentrating and making decisions
Frightening thoughts, such as hurting your baby
Sufferers should not wait for their symptoms to just go away.
Instead they should recognise that it is not their fault they are depressed and it does not make them a bad parent.
If you or your partner may be suffering, talk to your GP or health visitor.
Treatments can include self-help, such as talking to loved ones, resting when you can and making time to do things you enjoy. Therapy may also be prescribed.
In severe cases where other options have not helped, antidepressants may be recommended. Doctors will prescribe ones that are safe to take while breastfeeding.
Postnatal depression's cause is unclear, however, it is more common in those with a history of mental-health problems.
Lack of support from loved ones, a poor relationship with the partner and a life-changing event, such as bereavement, can also raise the risk.

Full list of ITV hosts KEEPING their job amid major cuts 'revealed'

ITV announced a series of cuts earlier this year that will see the likes of Lorraine and Loose Women slashed to just 30 weeks a year but some of the most famous faces will remain at the broadcaster Some of the most famous faces on ITV will reportedly keep their jobs at the broadcaster, despite numerous budget issues. Earlier this year, it was claimed that broadcaster's earnings have allegedly plummeted by 44 per cent to £99 million during the first six months of the year, sparking a fresh drive to curb production expenses, and it means that more than half 440 staff who work behind the scenes will lose their jobs. ‌ However, those in front of the camera who have become familiar to ITV viewers over the years, are said to be safe amid the blood bath. According to Katie Hind at the Daily Mail, it's understood that Kate Garraway, who regularly hosts Good Morning Britain, is safe, as is her co-host Adil Ray. Richard Madeley, who presented This Morning alongside his wife Judy Finnigan in the 1990s, also hosts the early morning programme and is said to have so far only agreed to a short-term deal. ‌ Other long-serving presenters expected to keep their jobs include Julie Etchingham and Tom Bradby, who are known for fronting ITV News programmes, as is GMB's Susanna Reid, although she is said to be 'devastated' by the chaos. Some of the stars are said to be feeling guilty at having kept their jobs whilst those behind the scenes are the ones likely to lose out. It comes after ITV makes major decision on I'm A Celebrity's future after talks with officials. ‌ A source told the outlet: "It's awful to see, awful. These people work so hard and they've still lost their jobs. And where are they going to go? The industry is getting smaller and smaller for production staff. For people like Susanna and Kate, it has been devastating to watch their staff treated like this. Some of the stars wish they could do something to change it. Others, though, are just smug at the fact they are staying." It emerged earlier this year that ITV's staple chat shows Lorraine and Loose Women will be slashed to just 30 weeks of output per year, and Lorraine Kelly's eponymous programme will be cut to just half an hour and added onto the end of Good Morning Britain. Christine Lampard and Ranvir Singh regularly stand in for Lorraine when she is away from her eponymous, although those appearances are now set to be 'slashed' going forward. ‌ But it's now said to be an 'open secret' at the broadcaster that Lorraine, who started working for the network more than 40 years ago, will leave when her current contract is up. A source said: "Lorraine sees it as the end. She's got a year left on her contract which she will honour, but beyond that there are no plans for her to stay. She will be leaving." "We don't comment on individual contracts but we have always said that we intend to keep our daytime shows familiar to our audience," a statement to the Mirror read. " Good Morning Britain viewers can expect to see the presenting line up that they know and love on screen once the proposed changes to production and scheduling take place in 2026." Several ITV Daytime brands have been affected by budget cuts in the last few months. In May, it was announced that from January 2026, Good Morning Britain will be extended by 30 minutes to run from 6am to 9.30am daily. However Lorraine Kelly's show has been cut in half and will now run from 9.30am until 10am. Not only that, but the programme will only air for 30 weeks of the year. It comes amid news that ITV's soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale will also be slashing cast members to save on the budget, whilst they will also both lose an episode per week. ‌ During the weeks Lorraine is not on air, Good Morning Britain will run from 6am to 10am. This Morning, which is currently fronted by Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard amongst a host of others, will remain in its 10am-12.30pm slot on weekdays throughout the year, while Loose Women will be in the 12.30-1.30pm slot for a seasonal basis of 30 weeks too. Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, explained of the huge changes: "Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. "I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams."

The three-part show, said to be the definitive history of one of Britain's best-known celebrities, has been snapped by Sky and is likely to air early next year. A TV insider said: 'This will very much be a nostalgic trip back to the wild celeb days of the Nineties and Noughties when the artist formerly known as Jordan burst onto the scene. 'But first and foremost it is an autobiographical show, and one which is likely to be seen as the most authentic version of her story. 'It will also be a hugely credible autobiography because it's made by Louis Theroux's production company, Mindhouse, though Louis probably won't be fronting it himself. 'The show is likely to feature lots of previously unseen archive photographs and video footage from back in the day.' Katie appeared as a page 3 girl in The Sun in 1996 with the image simply captioned: 'Katie Price, aged 18, from Brighton, Sussex.' A friend had suggested she have some photos taken to launch her modelling career and these were sent in to the paper. Shortly afterwards she had her first shoot showing off her natural curly hair and wearing an outfit which echoed the big, new movie released the same year, Striptease starring Demi Moore. From then on, she became hugely famous, having a string of flings with other famous faces including footballer Dwight Yorke with whom she had a son, Harvey, who was born in 2002. But she seemed to have a penchant for pop stars including Gareth Gates, Dane Bowers and Peter Andre, who became her first husband in 2005. They had a son and daughter, Junior and Princess, then divorced in 2009. Princess Andre reveals what mum Katie Price thinks of her TV career after star vowed NOT to watch new show She went on to marry Alex Reid in 2010, divorcing him a year later, then she wed stripper Kieran Hayler in 2013. They had two more children together, son Jett and daughter Bunny, before divorcing in 2021. During her 30 years in showbusiness she had made millions through modelling, TV appearances on shows including I'm A Celebrity and writing 11 novels, two children's books, eight autobiographies and a fashion book. But she also lost millions and in 2019 was declared bankrupt and became synonymous with her run-down home, which was branded Katie's 'Mucky Mansion.' Sky were approached for comment. It comes as Katie revealed she had been banned from starring in Princess' current reality TV show, The Princess Diaries. 6 The show will follow Katie's up and down career Credit: Getty 6 Sky are expected to air the programme next year Credit: INSTAGRAM @waynelineker She was reportedly banned from being featured in the programme despite offering to film for free for three days. It has been claimed that those close to Princess are concerned that being too closely associated with Katie could be detrimental to her future brand. Katie even claimed she was banned from attending Princess' own birthday party as a result of the camera rolling to capture the footage for her TV show. In an episode of her podcast, Katie said: "Princess is now officially an adult, so Mummy and Princess can now go out together, if certain people would let her be seen with me." She went on: "Everyone knows she's doing this documentary - and I'm not in it. Certain people don't think it's good for Princess to be seen with me."
