Hand sculpture unveiled at Wrexham Maelor Hospital

Talented sculptor Simon O'Rourke, from Cefn Mawr, is well-known for his unique creations by now.
Back in 2019, his giant dragon at Bethesda caused 'traffic to slow down' in order to catch a glimpse of it.
More recently, his Deadpool sculpture - in honour of Wrexham AFC co-chairman Ryan Reynolds - caught the eye on social media and beyond as it raised funds for charity.
Another notable work of Simon's is the Giant Hand of Vyrnwy in Powys - which was transformed from the remnants of what was the UK's tallest tree - after it was damaged in a storm.
Now, his latest work has seen him create a powerful hand sculpture which sits proudly outside the Maelor Hospital in Wrexham as of today (May 27).

Wrexham Community Gardens contacted Simon last year asking him to donate a sculpture in order to 'enhance the gardens' there.
Simon says the aim of the sculpture, made from a redwood tree, was to 'symbolise the importance of hands in the medical field'.
He added that he wants it to be a 'gift to the community'.
Simon said: "Hands are a practical and personal connection between people. I wanted to symbolise the importance of hands in the medical field, between staff and patients.
"The hand sculpture is creased and worn looking giving a feel of a working hand, and the symbol on the palm is the oldest medical symbol in the world, dating back thousands of years.
"The staff and serpent symbols are found worldwide in the context of medicine to this day, making it a universally understood motif."
Simon added: "The sculpture is made from a Redwood tree that sadly had to be felled a couple of years ago in Welshpool, and it is always an honour to be able to give a tree another story by creating a sculpture.
"I created the sculpture as a gift to the community, and the location of the hospital is a significant one, as I've been treated there numerous times myself over the years. Public art is important in any community, I hope this brings some meaning to people."
Simon also took to social media to ask people not to use the hospital car park if they are stopping to look at/take photos of the sculpture.

He said: "If you stop to have a look, please don't use the hospital car park. It's incredibly difficult to find parking and we want to leave it for those using the hospital!"
Dr Stephen Stanaway, Wrexham Maelor Hospital Medical Director, said: 'I'm delighted on behalf of all colleagues at the Maelor to see this beautiful statue by Simon O'Rourke unveiled on our site. The fact that this is a gift from the artist to his own local hospital is just an illustration of how important a place our facility holds in the public view.
'The imagery it displays beautifully represents how healthcare is largely about hands, about human contact and about one human being interacting with and responding to the needs of another.
'I would like to thank Simon for his generous and donation to hospital. His gift will be treasured for many years.'

Spice Girls manager's drastic action amid reunion hopes and 'stubborn' Victoria

Spice Girls' former manager Simon Fuller is reportedly exploring a reunion for the pop group as digital avatars, in a similar fashion to ABBA's successful hologram show Talks are underway for the Spice Girls to make a comeback - but not in the usual way. Their former manager, Simon Fuller, is reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing the iconic group back as digital avatars, following the path set by ABBA's successful hologram residency. Sources have revealed that Fuller has pitched this cutting-edge concept to the band, envisioning lifelike holograms of Geri Halliwell-Horner, Mel B and Mel C, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham performing their greatest hits. Although Victoria opted out of their 2019 tour, insiders say she's open to this new approach as long as all the other members are on board. One insider shared: 'Simon is eager to pull off one final spectacle with the Spice Girls, and this is his latest brainchild. ‌ ‌ "He was the mastermind behind ABBA's groundbreaking digital shows and believes this strategy would suit the Spice Girls perfectly. Touring again seems doubtful - Victoria, for instance, isn't likely to return as a full-time member - so this could be their best chance to reunite.' According to the source, the band responded positively when Simon introduced the idea. 'Even Victoria said she'd support it if everyone else agreed. She wouldn't stand in the way,' they added. Fuller reportedly sees this venture as a way for the group to generate income effortlessly while also connecting with a brand-new generation of fans. 'It's an incredibly exciting concept, and he's confident it can be pulled off,' the inside told The Sun. ‌ The concept echoes the pitch Simon made to ABBA nearly a decade ago, though they eventually went with an even more futuristic show. ABBA's hologram residency in East London has been a huge hit and continues into its third year. Victoria herself has previously voiced support for a virtual Spice Girls residency. When asked on American television in 2022 about the idea, she responded, 'That is a great idea.' ‌ Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Geri had a secret meeting with Simon in Miami, where they discussed plans for a 2026 reunion - marking 30 years since the release of their debut single, 'Wannabe.' Earlier this year, Mel C also hinted at a reunion, saying, 'We have to do something special. Obviously, I can't say too much but we are talking about things. Hopefully a nice little world tour."

A source added: 'Simon is desperate to have one last hurrah with the Spice Girls and this is his latest idea. He was the person who came up with the original idea for Abba and their digital show and he thinks this model could work perfectly for the group. 'Touring again looks unlikely — someone like Victoria for example is never going to be a 'working member' of the Spice Girls — so this seems like the best option. You came up with an idea. A lot of us come up with ideas and we want to do TV shows and we want to entertain and we want to get a laugh, but your idea is changing more lives than any one idea on television.'" But we are seeing things that we've genuinely never seen before." Article continues below Simon has enjoyed huge success with various TV talent shows in the US and the UK, and he remains as ambitious as ever.
