On Thursday, city leaders officially changed the name of Westside Reservoir Park — Atlanta's largest green space — to Shirley Franklin Park. Central Avenue, a prominent downtown street, was also renamed in her honor.
Franklin, who made history in 2001 as Atlanta's first female mayor, played a key role in securing the land that would later become the park during her time in office.
"I don't do this for recognition — but if I have to be an example of that, I welcome it," Franklin said during the ceremony.

A Vigil was held in Franklin to remember the mother and her little girl killed by a man charged with driving drunk. Minaben Patel, 38, and her 5-year-old daughter Krisha were honored while the heartbroken community is praying for surviving family members. Vigil for mother and daughter With the community lifting him up and praying for him, 14-year-old Kunj Patel limped out of a wheelchair to leave flowers at the place where he survived a horrific crash, but it took the life of his 5-year-old sister and his mom. "The family is in deep pain right now," said Kiran Kumar Patel. "We just crying, 'why God you did this' because it was just a nice innocent family you know this is not the time to take away two family members." Even people who didn't know the Patel family wanted to show their love and support after hearing about the terrible crash. "We heard about the accident, and it fractured us, it's terrible. We didn't know them but we're all one family in the world," said community member Nancy Dowd. "I have a 5-year-old daughter, and it really touched me, and I cannot imagine how the family is coping with this." "Why did this have to happen in Franklin, one of the safest communities in Massachusetts," said community member Frank Falvey. Blanchard faces several charges including motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and is being held on a $250,000 bail.

A New Look at ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Is All About Family
As ticket sales begin today, Marvel has dropped another new look at Fantastic Four: First Steps in action–and although there's plenty glimpses of the First Family in action as they brace for the coming of Galactus, this new footage does properly welcome up to the next member of the team. While Reed and Sue's incoming addition to the Richards' has been teased in prior trailers, this new footage gives us our first actual look at little baby Franklin–who comic book fans know will grow up into one of the most powerful young heroes in the Marvel multiverse. Once a mutant (ah, comic books), Franklin Richards develops psionic powers at a young age, and is eventually one of the most potent reality manipulators along the already rare breed of those to use that powerset in Marvel's comics. Eventually, alongside his younger sister Valeria, Franklin becomes a member of the FF team in his own rights–but at least as far as First Steps goes, we're probably not going to see him tussling with the Silver Surfer and Galactus just yet, considering he's still in diapers. The rest of the footage teased is, of course, about that impending tussle with the devourer of worlds (although Marvel is keen on not quite showing us the scope of the MCU's take on Galactus just yet, content to leave him in glimpses and shadows), but we do get some fun glimpses, including a bit more of the Fantasticar in flight, and, intriguingly, the Marvel-1, the Fantastic Four's rocket ship, hurtling towards a planet facing horrendous damage to its surface. Whether that's another world that's fallen to Galactus' hunger already, or if it's even earth (or a glimpse of its potential fate should Galactus win) remains to be seen, but we do know that at some point in the climax of First Steps we're going to have to get some set up for Thunderbolts' post-credits scene, which saw Marvel-1 show up in orbit of Earth-616. Maybe we're setting up the Fantastic Four for a fight that not even they can win… or maybe they do, only for an incursion to sunder their reality anyway. We'll find out next month, when Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25.

Mother of 5-year-old girl killed in Franklin car crash succumbs to injuries
The mother of a young girl killed in a Franklin car crash last month has also died, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrisey announced Tuesday. Crash claims second victim Minaben Patel, 38, of Franklin, was driving with her husband, son and daughter on Memorial Day weekend when they were hit by a driver who was allegedly drunk. Police said James Blanchard, 21, of Franklin was driving in the opposite lane of traffic when his pickup truck collided with a Honda Accord on Grove Street just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24. Five-year-old Krisha Patel was also killed in the crash. Krisha's father and brother were also in the car at the time of the crash. The family was on its way to celebrate the boy's birthday. The father, who was driving the car, was treated and released. The boy was hospitalized with critical injuries. There is no update on his condition. Driver pleads not guilty Prosecutor Christopher Meade said Blanchard had two bottles of vodka in the truck and was drinking from one of them before the crash. He was arrested and, according to police, had a blood alcohol level of 0.189. The legal limit in Massachusetts is 0.08. Blanchard was ordered held on $250,000. He pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide, drunk driving and several other charges. The family will host a service of remembrance for Minaben Patel on June 5. "The Norfolk District Attorney's Office and the Franklin Police Department are saddened by the loss to Minaben's family and we extend our heartfelt condolences," District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey and Franklin Police Chief Thomas J. Lynch said in a prepared statement.
