I ate a giant 15-inch sausage roll 10x bigger than Greggs

Rhyl Journal04-06-2025
Well, I have, and it blew my mind.
As a northern girl who grew up on Poundbakery and Greenhalgh's creations (to name a few), that's quite a statement.
This 'ultimate' sausage roll from Valley Bakery weighs a whopping 1.3kg and is 15 inches long.
Pretty impressive compared to the size of a standard sausage roll from Greggs at just 103g.
But does it have all the mouth-watering qualities similar to an iconic sausage roll from one of the nation's beloved bakeries, and does it beat it by a hefty sausage-mile? I had to find out.
So, what exactly is the 'ultimate' sausage roll made by Valley Bakery?
The giant sausage roll has returned for a limited time only to mark Father's Day on Sunday, June 15, via Prestige Hampers.
You might have even heard of the Valley Bakery creation as it's been featured on ITV's Good Morning Britain and 'enjoyed' by Piers Morgan, who claimed: 'Now this is what I call a sausage roll.'
Is this the biggest sausage roll you have seen? (Image: Molly Court/Newsquest) The bakery explains: 'Beautifully handcrafted in the heart of Yorkshire our artisan bakers have handcrafted our famous sausage roll, using the finest British pork from responsibly hand-reared pigs.
'Encased in delicious locally churned all-butter pastry, seasoned with a carefully selected blend of herbs by our pastry experts to create unforgettable flavour in every bite.
'Our bakers follow traditional, small-batch methods, resulting in a carefully curated and delicious gift.'
It's been almost a week since it was delivered to my house (which was very well packed with ice bags) and I still can't get over the size of the sausage roll.
The giant sausage roll has lovely all-butter pastry (Image: Molly Court/Newsquest) I have no idea how one even creates a recipe for such a meaty beast, but it works.
The pork inside the well-baked, glorious, buttery, flaky pastry might well be the best I've ever tried – no fat, no gristle and certainly no dripping grease.
Just full of flavour with all the usual herbs you would expect in a sausage roll and not overpowering in the slightest.
You could certainly tell it was made from the 'finest' pork and I have to admit, it's a league above Greggs'.
But that does come with a price, as the 'ultimate' sausage roll will set you back £29.99 (currently on offer).
Yet I think it's pretty reasonable because there's no doubt it's the biggest I've ever seen and you can tell a lot of effort has gone into sourcing the quality of the meat.
What a perfect gift just in time for Father's Day (Image: Molly Court/Newsquest) Plus, although it's back for Father's Day and would make the perfect gift if the fatherly figure in your life can't resist a pie or sausage roll (and trying new meaty bakes), it could also be ideal for upcoming family gatherings.
I gave five people in my family two servings each and there was still enough for double that, if not more.

I'll also let you into a little secret – pop it in the oven to warm up before eating to get the best of the all-butter pastry, and pair it with a sweet or savoury chutney (I went for caramelised onion).
Who knows, I might try dipping a Greggs sausage roll into some chutney next time.
Prestige Hampers' Father's Day Ultimate Sausage Roll is priced at £29.99 (on offer instead of £49.99) and available to preorder for delivery online at prestigehampers.co.uk now (a link to which can be found above).

She also explained why she keeps her distance from social media engagement: "I use Twitter /X for work but am not active on it. I'm sensitive and can't hack that (abuse) side of it, so I don't even bother looking."

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz 'dream team' lasts just 51 MINUTES in first-round exit

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz have lost to Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper in the first round of the revamped US Open mixed doubles. Raducanu and Alcaraz's partnership lasted just 51 minutes as Pegula and Draper beat them 4-2 4-2. The United States Tennis Association revamped the mixed doubles event this year, upping the prize money to $1million (£750,000) to tempt the biggest stars in the sport to enter and the move has been successful. Raducanu and Alcaraz are among those who decided to enter, with the pair teaming up as a wildcard entry after the Spaniard asked her to be his partner. However, Pegula and Draper are the top seeds and won a highly entertaining clash. Reflecting on the victory, British No.1 Draper said: "I've got a pretty good partner! What an experience playing out here with Jessica against Emma and Carlos. It doesn't get any better." World No.4 Pegula added: "Thanks everyone for showing up, that was such a fun atmosphere. I've played doubles a lot but not a lot recently, so that's always tricky. It was a lot of fun and Jack played great." Tom Hiddleston drops major hint about The Night Manager season 2 release date

The BBC's The Night Manager is set to return for a second series, with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Jonathan Pine Viewers of BBC 's The Night Manager are anxiously awaiting the second series launch, and it appears the wait might soon be over. ‌ The six-episode espionage drama debuted in 2016 and became a massive success amongst television audiences. The programme draws from John le Carré 's 1993 novel bearing the identical title. ‌ Tom Hiddleston assumed the starring role of Jonathan Pine in The Night Manager, and he's set to return for both the upcoming second and third instalments. ‌ Whilst appearing on BBC's The One Show on Tuesday (19 August), Tom teased when audiences might anticipate the second season's arrival as presenters Roman Kemp and Clara Amfo shared viewer messages. Tom, joining The One Show alongside his The Life of Chuck co-stars Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill, learnt that someone had tweeted the BBC programme expressing their enthusiasm for The Night Manager, reports Wales Online. Gazing directly into the camera, the performer playfully declared over when the second series would be released: "Coming soon!" before beaming at Roman and Clara. Previously, it was revealed The Night Manager had received approval for second and third series from both the BBC and Amazon Prime Video, with Tom confirming his return to the forthcoming episodes. Additional information has remained largely confidential, though the second series will continue from where the original concluded, regardless of the considerable gap between both seasons. ‌ The Night Manager spins the tale of Jonathan, a night manager at a posh hotel in Cairo and an ex-British soldier. He's enlisted by Angela, played by Olivia Colman, who heads up a Foreign Office task force probing illicit arms sales. Angela assigns Jonathan the mission of penetrating the inner circle of arms trader Richard Roper, brought to life by Hugh Laurie. Reflecting on his return to The Night Manager for a fresh series, Tom expressed: "The first series of The Night Manager was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. The depth, range and complexity of Jonathan Pine was, and remains, a thrilling prospect. "I'm so looking forward to reuniting with Simon and Stephen Cornwell, David Farr and Stephen Garrett, and to working with Georgi Banks-Davies to tell the next chapter of our story. I can't wait."
