Section of teachers want to skip BLO duty: ‘Scared of our safety'
Some of the teachers are apprehensive about their security while doing the BLO duty amid the politically charged climate in the state. 'The EC is assuring proper security to us, but we don't know if that would be enough. Such political war of words creates panic and tension in rural areas of West Bengal, and we will end up being the target of voters. So, we have decided not to take up the BLO duty,' Neelkantha Ghosh, a secondary school teacher, said.
Ghosh was referring to remarks made by the chief minister as well as BJP MLA Adhikari.
At an administrative review meeting in Birbhum three days ago, the chief minister said the BLOs should 'ensure that not a single name is removed from the voter's list' when the EC conducts the SIR in the state. Telling BLOs not to harass the voters during the survey, she reminded them that they are officials of the state government and work for the Election Commission only for a brief period during the elections.
The chief minister also urged people to protest if the BLO deletes their names from the voters' list.
On the other hand, BJP's Adhikari has alleged that a large number of Rohingya and illegal Bangladesh nationals have been enlisted in the electoral roll, and asked the BLOs to take a lead role in deleting the names of illegal immigrants and 'fictitious' voters from the voters' list. The BJP leader has also complained to the EC against the chief minister, saying 'her attempt to intimidate and manipulate the electoral process by instructing BLOs is an unauthorized attempt to dilute the voters' lists for political gain'.
To resist getting deployed as BLOs, over a thousand teachers and non-teaching staff of non-government aided schools have come together to form an outfit, BLO-duty Protirodh Mancha.
The outfit in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has sought exemption from BLO duty, citing workload pressure due to the newly introduced semester exams in schools.
'The teachers are for the development of students. We should concentrate on their education, not on other work. We have already been assigned too many non-educational work. That should not be increased,' said another teacher, Srimanta Dhara.
According to Ghosh, due to semester exams, it would be difficult for them to take part in the SIR, which can be held as early as August. 'How can we be engaged in such a huge task during the semester examination. So, our demand is to keep the teachers out of the process for the revision of voters' list,' he added.
A government employee, on condition of anonymity, said, 'Not only teachers, we are also afraid of our security during revision of the electoral roll. Teachers can raise their voice easily as more than 80 per cent of them are partially dependent on the government funds. We are straightway dependent on the state government, and if the head of the government threatens us, where will we go?'
Meanwhile, a senior officer in the State Chief Electoral Office said, 'We are arranging sufficient security arrangements for all the BLOs. But we are not divulging what type of arrangements.'
According to the officer, the Election Commission would need over 80,000 BLOs for the revision of the electoral rolls. 'If the government employees, including the teachers, panic, then it would be difficult to make the final list of BLOs for the revision. Our CEO met the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi. He will return on Friday. After that, we will make our final plan,' the officer added.

ECI suspends four West Bengal electoral officers for voter list tamperings, orders probe
NEW DELHI: Election Commission of India on Tuesday suspended four West Bengal government officers for allegedly including wrongful names in the voters list and compromising data security, officials said. The poll panel also asked the West Bengal Chief Secretary to lodge FIRs against the four officers under provisions of the election laws. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated action against four West Bengal election officials following a Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) report exposing unauthorized inclusions in electoral rolls of Baruipur Purba and Moyna constituencies. In its letter to the Chief Secretary - a copy obtained by this newspaper - the ECI cited the CEO's findings of irregularities committed by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant EROs. The officers - Debottam Dutta Choudhury (ERO), Tathagata Mondal (AERO), Biplab Sarkar (ERO), and Sudipta Das (AERO) were responsible for preparing, revising, and correcting electoral rolls. The ECI directed that "suitable disciplinary proceedings" be initiated against them and FIRs lodged for actions amounting to "criminal misconduct." An FIR was also recommended against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. The discrepancies surfaced during a sample check of voter application forms (Form 6) by the West Bengal Election Commission. The ECI noted that the officers violated due procedure, warranting penalties under Section 32(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Following the CEO's orders, the District Election Officer (DEO) must form a senior officials' team to scrutinice all voter forms processed in the past year and submit a report by August 14, 2025. The ECI instructed the Chief Secretary to ensure strict compliance and submit an action-taken report "at the earliest." The move comes amid Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's opposition to the ECI's push for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state's electoral rolls.

Transport workers' stir triggers political slugfest between CM and LoP in Karnataka
The Tuesday protest by the public transport employees triggered a slugfest between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) R. Ashok, with the latter blaming the former for the situation. The Chief Minister launched a counterattack, blaming Mr. Ashok, who earlier handled the transport portfolio in the erstwhile BJP government, for failing to resolve the problems of transport workers back then. It all began with Mr. Ashok blaming the 'misrule' of the Chief Minister and the State's 'financial bankruptcy' as the reasons for the transport workers going on a strike, and demanding the Chief Minister's resignation. 'Save Karnataka and allow Kannadigas to live in peace by tendering resignation to your post,' Mr. Ashok said in a social media post. This Chief Minister shot back, saying it was when Mr. Ashok was the Transport Minister that the transport staff had gone on a 15-day strike as they were not being paid their salaries fully then. Unlike the Congress government that had implemented a pay hike with retrospective effect, the erstwhile BJP government had resorted to prospective revision for them, he said. He further alleged that the recruitment of staff and purchase of new buses had been stopped during the BJP rule, while a financial burden of ₹5,900 crore towards various expenses, including pending diesel bills, had been passed on to the next government. However, the Congress that came to power had appointed 10,000 staff and included 5,200 new buses to the fleet, he said. He alleged that the BJP dispensation had borrowed ₹2,000 crore to pay for diesel bills and Provident Fund of the staff, but left the loan repayment to the Congress government. Mr. Siddaramaiah urged Mr. Ashok to remember the 'injustice' done by the BJP dispensation to transport workers before pointing an accusing finger at the Congress government.

Bihar voters will show mirror to Rahul Gandhi: Giriraj
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) Bihar voters will show mirror to 'poster boy of Pakikstan' Rahul Gandhi in the coming elections for spreading lies about the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said on Tuesday. 'The SIR is taking place as part of an electoral process yet Rahul Gandhi and Tejaswi Yadav jhooth ki kheti karte hain (they cultivate lies)," he told reporters on the sidelines of inauguration of an event organised by the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC). The minister said if RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav possesses two voter cards, he should die of shame (usse toh chullu bhar paani mein doob ke mar jana chahiye). Singh also lashed out on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi saying he believes in US President Donald Trump and likes what Pakistan says, but does not agree with the Supreme Court. He referred to recent observations by the Supreme Court against Rahul Gandhi in relation to his remarks on Indian army. 'He (Gandhi) has become the poster boy of Pakistan. He is going to Bihar from the 9th to the 14th. The people of Bihar will show them a mirror in the elections," said Singh, who is MP from Begusarai Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar. Referring to the over 35 lakh weavers associated with handlooms, the minister said in the near future their designs will be linked to blockchain technology so that the designs do not get stolen by any foreign company again. 'I don't want to take any names, foreign companies are stealing our designs and projecting as their own. India does not need anyone else's design," Singh told reporters.
