Books and beyond: UAE entities highlight heritage, peace, knowledge at ADIBF 2025

SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)Whether you're a history enthusiast, a peace advocate, or passionate about politics, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair offers a rich trove of knowledge across various fields. While the spotlight was on the thousands of books on display, experts from leading UAE institutions were also present to share valuable insights.Speaking to Aletihad at the fair, UAE institutions discussed their diverse roles in serving the community and their industries — from sustainable pearl farming and peacebuilding to literacy, political thought, and interfaith dialogue. They all have a common denominator: A shared commitment to culture, heritage, and innovation.Showcasing its sustainable process of cultivating pearls, the Abu Dhabi Pearls Centre is participating in the book fair in collaboration with TRENDS Research & Advisory.The centre, established in 2007, aims to revive the Gulf's traditional pearling culture and produce high-quality pearls, said Ayesha Al Hammadi, Unit Head at Abu Dhabi Pearls Centre. 'We use a local oyster species called Pinctada radiata and operate from November to April. Each season, we work with around 18,000 oysters, aiming to produce approximately 25,000 pearls annually,' Al Hammadi told Aletihad. ADIBF visitors who wished to explore global peace efforts would have found a wealth of information at the stand of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace.Dr. Al Fadhel Yahdih, Researcher at the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, emphasised their role in spreading the culture of peace globally.'Since 2014, we have hosted annual international conferences attended by about 1,000 influential thinkers, political leaders, and religious figures.'He highlighted key initiatives such as the Marrakesh Declaration (2016), which affirmed religious minority rights in Muslim countries, describing it as 'an unprecedented declaration, praised even by the late Pope Francis.'He also mentioned the "Hilf al-Fudul" and the "Comprehensive Citizenship," both launched to promote peaceful coexistence."This year, we are participating in the fair to showcase our initiatives to promote peace, and we will soon release an Encyclopaedia of Peace — a comprehensive multi-volume reference."Dr. Abbas Sadiq, Editor-in-Chief of the International Center for Strategic Studies, stressed the centre's consistent participation in the book fair, showcasing research in political science and international relations, as well as political thought in general. 'This output is published in the form of magazines, periodicals, and books. These periodicals contain studies, analytical articles, and future outlooks,' he said.In addition to regular publications, the centre also publishes timely books that 'reflect global transformations in security and political aspects, as well as domestic policies of different countries', Sadiq said, pointing to a newly released collection this year.Meanwhile, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library offered a packed lineup of workshops and book signings.Aida Al Sawad from the Mohammed bin Rashid Library, said, 'We use our presence here to introduce the public to the library's nine branches and the resources available through memberships—whether for individuals, children, seniors, or people of determination.''Our goal is to stay aligned with the latest developments in the knowledge and cultural industries, while enhancing public awareness of the services and initiatives of the Mohammed bin Rashid Library,' she added. The Abrahamic Family House Centre made its debut at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair with a cultural pavilion designed to foster interfaith and intercultural understanding. Among the key highlights of the centre's participation are a session that shared the institution's mission to promote dialogue and coexistence and an interactive library that invited visitors to engage with live human stories and experiences. It also hosted dialogues that highlighted new voices contributing to intercultural conversations, and a panel of Emirati authors who reflected on how storytelling strengthens human connection.The Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority enriched the fair with several heritage-themed programmes, including a session on the Nabati poetry, and a panel on of folk poetry in the UAE.
The sessions highlighted poetry's role in preserving dialects, documenting history, and highlighting customs.

Since then, bilateral cooperation has expanded significantly, and today the UAE is home to hundreds of thousands of Filipinos who play a vital role in many key sectors and in the country's continued development journey.

Diamond Standard announces Fatwa: The ideal solution for Islamic finance
Diamond Standard Co., producer of the world's only regulator-approved natural diamond commodities, today announced a historic milestone for the Islamic finance industry: the issuance of a Fatwa by Sheikh Dr. Mohamed Ali Elgari, approving the use of diamond commodities to enable more efficient and more proper Islamic finance applications. Dr. Elgari is an esteemed authority in Islamic finance, having served as Professor and Director of the Centre for Research in Islamic Economics at King Abdulaziz University, and as Shariah board member for organizations including AAOIFI, Islamic Fiqh Academy, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, BlackRock, Citibank, Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates NDB, HSBC, Standard Chartered and other banks worldwide. A New Era for $5 Trillion of Islamic Finance The Fatwa signifies a pivotal breakthrough for Islamic finance, where the lending of money with interest is prohibited under Shariah. Instead of directly lending money, the annual settlement for $5 trillion of global loan and bond transactions must be asset-backed, through structures like commodity Murabaha. Until now, commodity Murabaha used metals like nickel, copper, or aluminum. These assets were often created on paper, as options and warrants—a practice now in conflict with AAOIFI Standard 62, which requires the title to the commodity to be delivered to the borrower. Gold, silver, and food commodities are not permitted for Murabaha, and use of metals can result in substantial storage and delivery costs. In contrast, Diamond Standard commodities are a Shariah compliant, fully deliverable and fungible physical asset, with custody and delivery costs up to 97% less than that for metals like copper. After the issuance of Standard 62, a consortium of Islamic banks asked Diamond Standard to develop a commodity Murahaba solution, with audited physical custody in a Muslim majority country. Technology Meets Tradition Diamonds are a $1.2 trillion natural resource that was inaccessible to investors. Diamond Standard commodities—physical Coins and Bars—contain optimized and equivalent sets of diamonds, transparently sealed with a wireless computer chip. Since the commodities are all equal, they trade easily on spot exchanges, with a daily market price reported by Bloomberg. The wireless chip enables each commodity to issue an electronic title of ownership, recorded and traded securely on a public blockchain. This innovation supports instant title transfer and remote audit, and eliminates all uncertainty. The commodities are approved to settle CFTC-regulated futures and options in the U.S., and the commodity production is internally audited by Deloitte. GCC Expansion and Islamic Trading Platform To provide a standing pool of commodities to support Islamic applications, and enable investors to allocate to diamonds as a newly accessible natural resource, Diamond Standard is launching a commodity holding and trading company in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This entity will: Supply Shariah-compliant diamond commodities to Islamic finance institutions and trading platforms for Murabaha via an active market making desk. Offer a listed fund vehicle for equity and Sukuk investors seeking to invest in hard assets, expecting the value of diamonds to increase due to Islamic and investment demand. Anchor the development of new manufacturing, exports, and trading in the GCC region. This Diamond Standard commodity holding company has secured $280 million in capital commitments and is in discussions with GCC anchor investors to finalize the location of diamond importing, production and trading in the region. The initiative is expected to create over 200 new jobs, relating to commodity operations, import and export, marketing, trading, custody, and lending–as well as Islamic finance jobs. Tax Free Custody at DMCC Diamond Standard also announced that it had selected the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) as the venue to provide audited, tax-free custody for the Diamond Standard commodities. This will benefit Islamic banks and investors by avoiding the tariffs on diamonds entering the U.S. and elsewhere. TRENDS participates in an international symposium on BRICS green development strategies
1 June 2025 15:20 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)TRENDS Research & Advisory took part in the BRICS Think Tank International Symposium, held in Beijing under the theme 'Green BRICS, Golden Future.'The symposium was hosted by the China Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation (CCBTC), and organised by the National Academy of Development and Strategy (NADS), Renmin University of China. It aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange, strengthen partnerships among BRICS think tanks, and accelerate the transition toward low-carbon event addressed key topics including green development pathways, cross-border green cooperation, green technology and standards, and sustainable market collaboration. It highlighted how BRICS countries are responding to global climate change and environmental challenges by adopting innovative green development strategies, advancing policy reforms, and enhancing international cooperation. Pathways to Green DevelopmentAbdulla Al-Khaja, a researcher at TRENDS Research & Advisory, contributed a research paper during the first session titled 'Pathways to Green Development.' This project is not only a response to the challenges of intermittent renewable energy supply, but also a tangible demonstration that green growth is becoming a reality. Strengthening Strategic AutonomyAl-Khaja noted that the UAE's commitment extends beyond national borders. The country's accession to BRICS in 2024 reflects a strategic vision aligned with emerging economies' efforts to reshape global governance. Despite its economic strength, the UAE recognises the importance of building alternative development and financial frameworks, deepening South-South cooperation, and reinforcing strategic autonomy amid shifting global power added that this vision was reflected in the BRICS+ Summit in Kazan, which underscored the importance of building partnerships and consensus in a multipolar world.A key example of such cooperation is the $2.8 billion investment agreement between Masdar and China's Silk Road Fund, aimed at deploying renewable energy solutions across Belt and Road Initiative economies.
