US Trade Deals Come With Defense Strings Attached

Bloomberg2 days ago
We have entered a dark era of trade deals, one where Washington now openly links national security to success. If countries want lower tariffs, they have to meet President Donald Trump's defense demands.
It's working. Last week, the White House cut deals with Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan, granting them lower rates than Trump's threatened tariffs. In exchange, they have had to sign up to vaguely worded commitments on defense and national security.

Illinois Tool Works lifts 2025 profit forecast betting on price hikes

(Reuters) -Illinois Tool Works lifted the low end of its annual profit forecast range on Wednesday, as it expects pricing actions on its industrial equipment to cushion the impact of tariffs. U.S. President Donald Trump's expansive tariffs have driven up costs of raw materials, including steel and aluminum, squeezing margins for industrial equipment makers and forcing them to raise prices to offset the impact. Illinois Tool Works said in May that localized production, flexible operations and a diversified business mix have helped it navigate economic uncertainty. The company, which supplies components and fasteners to major clients including Ford and BMW, is capitalizing on the rapid growth of the automotive sectors. The automotive OEM segment was the biggest contributor to overall revenue with $845 million, followed by the test and electronics segment with $686 million. Illinois Tool Works now expects 2025 profit to be in the range of $10.35 to $10.55 per share, compared with its prior projection of $10.15 to $10.55 per share. It also lifted full-year its revenue growth forecast range to between 1% and 3%, from 0% to 2%. The company said its on-going pricing actions are projected to offset tariff cost impacts and current foreign exchange rates. The industrial company posted second-quarter operating revenue of $4.05 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $4.02 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. It reported a quarterly profit of $2.58 per share, compared with $2.54 per share a year earlier. Sign in to access your portfolio

Procter & Gamble CEO on tariffs: they are 'inherently inflationary'

The Trump administration's tariff policy is causing Procter & Gamble (PG) to push through price hikes on shoppers to protect its profit margins. "It [tariffs] is inherently inflationary — it increases the cost of importation and that's part of the policy design," P&G chairman and CEO Jon Moeller told me on Yahoo Finance. "In some places, that makes a lot of sense. But it inherently increases costs. Then manufacturers need to work through how much of that they can absorb and deal with and how much they need to pass on." The company said Tuesday it will see a $1 billion hit to profits in its new fiscal year as a result of tariffs. It's increasing prices as a result. "There will be some price increases," Moeller said. "We're going to try to combine those with innovation ... We're also working hard to reduce cost to minimize the impact of those price increases." P&G is taking a cautious approach to the next 12 months as it navigates uncertain consumers and tariffs. It offered mixed EPS guidance for its new fiscal year, with the bottom end of the range below analyst forecasts. The company forecasts full fiscal year sales growth of unchanged to up 4%. Analysts were looking for 2% growth. Earnings are pegged in a range of $6.83 to $7.09 compared to estimates for $6.99. Moeller said consumers are trading down to cheaper alternatives within the P&G portfolio. Shares rose slightly in premarket trading as fourth fiscal quarter results beat estimates. P&G's earnings were overshadowed by a surprise change atop the C-suite ahead of the results. The consumer products giant announced late Monday that Shailesh Jejurikar will succeed CEO Jon Moeller on Jan. 1, 2026. Jejurikar is currently the company's COO but has been with P&G since 1989. He has helped lead some of P&G's most important businesses around the world, notably a fabric care business led by the Tide brand. Moeller has been the CEO of P&G since November 2021. He has been with the company since 1988, holding positions such as COO and CFO before landing the top Sozzi is Yahoo Finance's Executive Editor and a member of Yahoo Finance's editorial leadership team.
