Dillon Gabriel opens up on Browns QB competition, preseason injury

Dillon Gabriel opens up on Browns QB competition, preseason injury

USA Today2 days ago
With six different quarterbacks on the roster, the Cleveland Browns find themselves in a quandary at the position. Among those six players is former Oregon Ducks star Dillon Gabriel, who is learning that life comes at you fast.
Just a few months ago, he was competing for a chance to bring his team to the National Championship Game, and now he finds himself scratching and clawing for a roster spot in the NFL. Despite an up-and-down showing in this year's training camp, Gabriel has remained third on Cleveland's unofficial depth chart, even while battling a hamstring injury.
I will say I do feel better from day one, and it's just been a good progression,' Gabriel said in his Wednesday press conference, via transcript from the team. 'So, you just want to keep stacking it that way and keep feeling better. So, want to continue that trend.'
While he was sidelined for the team's preseason opener, his teammate Shedeur Sanders stole the show and put the pressure on Gabriel to return from his injury. Now that Sanders is dealing with an injury of his own and Gabriel's is healing, he's had some time to reflect on the injury and how the quarterback competition is unfolding.
'I have no clue what's going to happen," Gabriel said on Wednesday. "I'm just right where my feet are. But time will tell, and we'll see what happens, but that's up to the coaches, and, you know, we got a lot of time up to that point.'
Gabriel doesn't want to write any checks he can't cash, so he vaguely described how the battle is going. But he knows he has a tremendous opportunity to make up the ground he lost while battling his injury, and he needs to take full advantage of it.

Travis Hunter's Colorado GPA Draws Attention After Jaguars Debut

Travis Hunter's Colorado GPA Draws Attention After Jaguars Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following a tremendous college football career, where he ascended to stardom at Colorado on and off the field, two-way star Travis Hunter made his NFL preseason debut on Saturday. The Jacksonville Jaguars, who traded four picks to move up for the No. 2 selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, are seeing their gamble pay off as Hunter defies the odds by playing both ways at the NFL level. He had somewhat of a quiet outing in the Jaguars' 31-25 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, recording just two catches for nine yards, while not registering a stat on defense. While he has a whole career ahead of him, fans took to social media on Monday to reminisce of all that he accomplished this past college football season with notable feats such as winning the Heisman Trophy, winning the Biletnikoff Award (best receiver) and played nearly 1,500 snaps. However, there seemed to be one Hunter factoid that occured off of the field that has caught the eye of many, which is his GPA. Travis Hunter's College GPA Aside from dominating on offense and defense, Hunter was also a superstar in the classroom. "Dude does it all," commented one user. "What can't he do," questioned another. As seen on the program's website, the Psychology major recorded a 4.0 GPA in two of his four semesters in Boulder, while maintaining a cumulative GPA that eclipsed 3.8. In addition to racking up awards for his play on the field, Hunter was also named AcademicAll-American of the Year, as he earned first-team Academic All-America both years at Colorado. Travis Hunter's Growing Pains in NFL Although he was an all-everything in college, Hunter still has some growing pains to endure at the NFL level as indicated in his postgame evaluation by his new head coach Liam Coen. "I think he made a couple good catches on some option routes," Coen said. "He missed the one tackle defensively that I noticed, like that was the only thing that I kind of noticed. In terms of his about his overall play, I'll have to watch the tape on how he operated defensively a little bit more, but I thought offensively he made the right decisions on those option routes. He made a good catch and almost broke out of that one." When Does Travis Hunter Play Next? Although his college teammate and now-Cleveland Browns quarterback, Shedeur Sanders stole the show over the weekend, once Hunter finds his footing it's hard to imagine there will be a bigger story in the NFL. He and the Jags will return to action on Sunday agianst the New Orleans Saints for their second preseason bout. In terms of his regular-season debut, Hunter and Jacksonville open the year on Sunday Sept. 7 against the Carolina story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Jalen Milroe Hit With Disappointing Depth Chart News After NFL Preseason Debut

Jalen Milroe Hit With Disappointing Depth Chart News After NFL Preseason Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe made his NFL preseason debut over the weekend for the Seattle Seahawks, who selected him with the No. 92 overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. In Seattle's 23-23 tie against the Las Vegas Raiders, Milroe completed 6-of-10 passes for 60 yards, while also scampering for an additional 38 yards on the ground. Although it was previously reported that Milroe had surpassed Drew Lock as the team's second quarterback behind Sam Darnold on the depth chart, it was the 28-year-old Lock who got the starting nod. Despite going into the game listed as the second quarterback on the depth chart according to ESPN, Milroe found himself behind Lock. A development that appears to be continuing to move forward. ESPN updated its depth chart for the Seahawks following the first preseason game, and Milroe has since slid to the third spot behind Darnold and Lock. What This Means for Jalen Milroe Given Milroe's struggles with accuracy and knowing when to throw the ball 100 miles per hour at Alabama, he was always viewed as a project. While he likely would love to start right away, the Seahawks have no reason to rush him in his development. The team signed Darnold to a three-year deal worth over $100 million this offseason and is hoping he can lead them back into contention, while also being the bridge to the next quarterback. As for his battle with Lock, Milroe will presumably have another chance on Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs to prove story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
