Everyone likes Bollywood's Shahenshah, Amitabh Bachchan. From superhit films like 'Sholay', 'Deewar', 'Zanjeer' to 'Piku', he has left his mark in every kind of film. Amitabh gave new heights to Bollywood with his unique style, and almost every star considers him their idol. But, like every star, Amitabh's career also had ups and downs. There was a time when his films were continuously flopping. There was a film of that era, after watching which his wife Jaya Bachchan, got up and left in the middle of the screening. People started saying that now Big B's career is over. Come, know what is this whole story. Jaya Bachchan did not like this film of Big B
This is from the 1990s, when Amitabh's career was going through a difficult phase. Many of his films were not doing well at the box office and the taste of the audience was also changing. During this time, his film 'Mrityudaata' was released in 1997. This film was one of the biggest flops of that year. In an interview, Amitabh said that Jaya is his harshest critic. When 'Mrityudaata' was being screened, Jaya also came to see it. But she found the film so bad that she got up in the middle and left and could not watch the entire film.
'Mrityudaata' was Amitabh's first big film after 1992, from which there was hope for his comeback. This film was directed by Mehul Kumar and produced by Amitabh's company ABCL. This film was a new opportunity for him after five years, but it flopped completely at the box office. This failure also put Amitabh's production company in trouble. In the film, Amitabh played the role of a doctor, while Dimple Kapadia played the role of his wife.

‘Don't Believe In Divorce': Amitabh Bachchan Once Addressed Tension With Jaya Amid Rekha Controversy

In the 80s, rumours of Amitabh Bachchan's affair with Rekha persisted, but he denied divorce to Jaya Bachchan due to his 'Indian values'. Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan were the most hit headline-makers of the 80s. An already married Bachchan was rumoured to be smitten by Rekha back in the day. However, nothing materialised since the Sholay star once said that he doesn't 'believe in divorce" amid rumours of tension in his marriage with Jaya. Jaya Bachchan, reportedly, would dismiss rumours of her husband's affair in interviews. As written by Yasser Usman in his book Rekha: The Untold Story, published by Juggernaut, Jaya reportedly once said, 'Let the whole world say what they want. He [Amitabh Bachchan] has made a commitment to me and he has to have the courage (to say he's in love with somebody else!), and if he is doing something behind my back, it's his problem. Not my problem. He has to live with it. And with his conscience!" Then came Amitabh's response to growing tensions in his marriage. An excerpt from the book read, 'Without taking Rekha's name, Amitabh responded to the reported tensions in his marriage: 'A divorce will never happen in our case. I don't believe in divorce because my basic instincts are Indian. I made an absolutely first-class choice when I took Jaya as my wife'." Another portion from the book said, 'This is the closest that Amitabh ever came to even admitting that all was not well in the Bachchan household. But Rekha kept fuelling the media fire. In an interview with Stardust, she made a strange claim: that Jaya had invited her over to the Bachchan home one day. 'Jaya did not mind the relationship as long as she thought her husband was only having a fling. It's when she realised that he was really emotionally involved, that is when it began hurting her. She called me for dinner one evening and though we spoke about everything but him, before I left that day, she made sure to tell me, 'I will never leave Amit whatever happens'." In 1981, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan even starred in a film together – a casting that only Yash Chopra could have dared to put together. Interesingly, the film's plot mirrored the personal lives of the lead actors. The reason, it continues to stay relevant even today. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 16:58 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. When Big B faced his biggest battle: How Amitabh Bachchan fought Rs 90 crore debt, and his son Abhishek became his 'strongest' backup

Amitabh Bachchan's life has been nothing short of a Bollywood script, full of highs, lows, and jaw-dropping twists. Known as the 'Shahenshah' of Hindi cinema today, Big B had once been dismissed as a 'failed newcomer.' But while he eventually conquered the silver screen, his toughest challenge came not from cinema, but from real life, when his company went bankrupt and he was left with debts of nearly Rs 90 crore. From early failures to stardom In the beginning, Amitabh's acting career didn't look promising. Many of his first few films failed to click with the audience. But in 1973, Zanjeer changed everything. The film was a major success and launched him into superstardom. Over the next two decades, he became a name every Indian household knew and loved. ABCL: A risk that went wrong Things changed in the mid-1990s. Amitabh ventured into business with Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), hoping to make a mark in film production, event management, and entertainment. But the gamble didn't pay off. In an India Today interview, Amitabh described this phase as 'one of the darkest periods' of his career. He shared, 'I can never forget how creditors used to land at our door, be abusive, threatening and demanding, and worse still, when they came for 'kudkee' at Prateeksha, our residence.' ABCL collapsed under financial mismanagement, leaving Amitabh with mounting debts that crossed Rs 90 crore. Live Events Abhishek leaves Boston to stand by his father At that time, Abhishek Bachchan was studying in Boston University. But when he learned of his father's financial struggles, he made a bold decision to leave college halfway. In an episode of Ranveer Allahbadia's podcast, Abhishek revealed: 'My father was going through this really rough time. He had started this business called ABCL… I said, I can't be here in Boston when my father doesn't know how he's going to get dinner. And that's how bad it was.' Abhishek further said he felt 'morally obliged' to be by his father's side. When he told Amitabh about quitting college, the actor reportedly called him to his study late one night and laid out the situation: 'Movies aren't working out, the business isn't working out, nothing is working out.' Despite this bleak outlook, Amitabh never gave up. With the support of his wife Jaya Bachchan and son Abhishek, he slowly rebuilt his career from scratch. From bankruptcy to blockbuster again Amitabh went back to acting and took on roles in films, TV commercials, and shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati to repay debts. Over the years, he cleared all his loans, proving once again that resilience can bring even legends back from the brink. Today, the Bachchans are among the most respected families in Indian cinema. Amitabh continues to work at the age of 82. After making his Tamil debut in Vettaiyan, he is now set to appear in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD and in Section 84 directed by Ribhu Dasgupta. Abhishek, too, has built his own career, recently starring in the OTT release Kaalidhar Laapata, and currently filming for King, which stars Shah Rukh Khan. Inputs from TOI
