UFC star sparks worry with weight cut for title fight - 'Looks like he's dying'
Charles Oliveira has sparked concern among UFC fans after footage emerged of his gruelling weight cut ahead of his clash with Ilia Topuria.
The Brazilian is looking to become a two-time lightweight champion when he takes on 'El Matador.' Oliveira won the vacant title back in 2021 after knocking out Michael Chandler - and later successfully defended the strap against Dustin Poirier. In 2022, however, he was stripped of the title after failing to make weight for his showdown with Justin Gaethje.
Despite winning the fight, Oliveira was unable to claim the title after missing weight. The 35-year-old eventually lost to Islam Makhachev for the vacant title. 'Do Bronx' has only lost once since the defeat to Makhachev and comes into the dust-up with Topuria off the back of a second win over Chandler.
Sensationally, despite his recent weight struggles, Oliveira used to compete in the featherweight division. However, towards the back end of his stint at 145lbs, he failed to make weight on several occasions - prompting the eventual return to lightweight in 2017. Ahead of his fight with Topuria, the Brazilian has left fans worried after footage emerged of the star fighter going through a brutal weight cut.
Oliveira was surrounded by his team-mates and coaches as he hopes to successfully make the 155lb limit ahead of Friday's official weigh-ins. The footage has gone viral online - with many fans offering their verdict. "Crazy what they have to go through to put on a show for us," one fan wrote.
A second posted: "Looks like he's dying," while a third commented: "Looks brutal." A fourth wrote: "Way too early to be cutting all that weight. Cant rehydrate for 24 hrs. That's not good. Not sure why he is doing this so early as opposed to tonight." Another replied: "Bro is going through it." Another user commented: "Weight cut? Would rather say near death experience."
There were some fans who called for fighters to compete at their natural weight. "So it's ridiculous to me that fighters have to lose weight to fight in a weight class that they shouldn't be fighting in to begin with. Why don't you just buy it at their weight?" One fan wrote.
Another commented: "Dumbest part about MMA, just fight ur everyday walking around weight. Ur a pro athlete so ur in shape all the time. If u weigh say 180, than u can fight from 170-190 its so simple but being 180 everyday to fight at 150 but be 180 at fight time is a waste and bad for the sport." Another fan replied: "Will never understand weight cuts... everyone should fight at their natural weight, it's a lot safer for everyone," while another posted: "The fact that fighters have to put their body's in This much danger to have grown men praying over them as they cut weight, is exactly why weight cutting should not be a thing in MMA."
In the build up to their clash, Topuria and Oliveira have crossed paths multiple times. Although 'El Matador' has vowed to knock the Brazilian out in the first round, that did not stop him from paying his respect when the pair met at the sauna during their weight cut. Topuria shared that moment as well as another run-in. "That's how our sport is. It's never personal, everyone's just fighting for their dreams," he said.

Dana White issues brutal response after Conor McGregor was 'removed' from the UFC
McGregor has been ramping up training amid talks of a potential comeback, but fans were left stunned after claims the Irishman had been removed from the UFC roster Dana White has brutally shut down reports Conor McGregor has been 'removed' from the official UFC roster. The 37-year-old UFC star has not fought since suffering a brutal defeat to long-time rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 back in 2021. He was due to make his return to the cage last year against Michael Chandler, but was forced to pull out of the contest after picking up an injury in training. Over the last few months, McGregor has been seen ramping up training amid talks of a potential UFC comeback. The Irishman has expressed his desire to return to the cage and has recently entered the drug testing pool. It comes after US president Donald Trump announced his plan to host a UFC event at the White House. However, fans were left fearing the worst for McGregor's possible return after UFC Roster Tracker reported that the Irishman had been REMOVED from the active roster. Usually, that would suggest a fighter was no longer in the promotion or retired. The news quickly went viral, and it did not take long for the UFC boss to have his say. The UFC Roster Tracker is not associated with the promotion - but it does track the organisation's roster from On Thursday evening, White was quick to shut down the rumours and point out that the former dual-weight UFC champion has not been removed from the roster. 'Total b*******,' White wrote under a report on Instagram. UFC journalist Ariel Helwani, reached out to McGregor and his team - who also shut down the stunning claim. In a post uploaded to X - formerly known as Twitter - Helwani wrote: " Conor McGregor HAS NOT parted ways the UFC. Both @TheNotoriousMMA and his team confirmed this to me. He also confirmed he is back in the pool, has submitted tests and all have come back clean. 'It's all systems a go,' he said." The Irishman is targeting a return to action next year and his potential comeback could take place on July 4, 2026, after White confirmed that the promotion's planned trip to the White House is all set for the aforementioned date. White revealed he has plans to meet with Trump and his daughter Ivanka at the end of the month to finalise the plans. It will mark the first time a UFC fight card would be hosted at the White House "It is definitely going to happen," White, a high-profile supporter of the US president, told CBS television. "I talked to him last night -- 'him' being the president -- and I'm flying out there at the end of this month, and I'm going to sit down and walk him through all the plans and the renderings, and we're going to start deciding what he wants and doesn't want." The UFC supremo added: "When he called me and asked me to do it, he said: 'I want Ivanka in the middle of this.' So Ivanka reached out to me, and her and I started talking about the possibilities, where it would be and, you know, I put together all the renderings." White is not ruling out an appearance from the Dubliner, but he will expect his star attraction to prove he is committed. "I mean, if you see, he's been posting videos of himself training, he's back in the pool now, he wants the White House fight," White told Pardon My Take. "Listen, if he starts getting in shape and starts training and stays the course, that's the fight he wants, he keeps telling me he wants that fight so we'll see how it plays out over the next few months." When is Conor McGregor's next fight? Following Trump's announcement, many fighters were quick to be fully onboard with the idea and express their interest in featuring on the card. It remains unknown as to whether or not McGregor will ever fight again, but it seems as if he is interested in the card. In a post uploaded to social media, the 37-year-old posted: "Happy 4th of July, USA. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House! I would be honoured! Count me in!!" UFC boss Dana White also seems to be onboard with the idea after McGregor leaked a conversation with the 55-year-old. The Irishman sent the UFC boss a few voice notes - seemingly relating to the aforementioned event at the White House - to which White replied: "I love it!" The 37-year-old later doubled down on his comments during a recent BKFC event, saying: "It's looking like I'm headed to the Oval Office again. That's where I'm headed next."

Joe Cole urges Chelsea to make 'logical' signing before transfer deadline
Joe Cole has implored Chelsea to make a 'logical' signing before the transfer deadline to boost their Premier League title aspirations. The Blues, who finished fourth last season, begin their 2025-26 campaign on Sunday against London rivals Crystal Palace. A number of new faces will be involved in Chelsea's Premier League opener with the club already spending around £250m on new recruits this summer. Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato and Liam Delap after just a few of the new signings to arrive through the doors at Stamford Bridge. Cole has been largely impressed by Chelsea's transfer activity this summer and has especially high hopes for Pedro, backing the Brazilian to go to 'another level' following his £60m move from Brighton. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. But the Stamford Bridge hero believes Chelsea need to sign a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer window shuts if they have serious aspirations of challenging for the title. Chelsea were in talks to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan earlier in the summer but now appear to be prepared to put their faith in error-prone Robert Sanchez. Discussing the goalkeeping situation in west London, Cole told TNT Sports: 'They kept chopping and changing last season. 'Look at all the great teams who have won titles, they've all got a top, top goalkeeper. For me it's just logical that we need to sort that out.' Asked for his hopes for new Chelsea striker Pedro, Cole added: 'He basically came off the beach and started banging the goals in at the Club World Cup. 'He looks like he's been a Chelsea player for years. I know the people at Chelsea were really, really pleased with the summer transfer window. 'Joao Pedro can play in any of the front-three positions and they probably don't actually know how good a player they've got right now. 'I think there's another level for him to go up.' More Trending While Cole wants a new goalkeeper to arrive at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's current transfer priorities are Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho. The Blues are still in talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for Netherlands international Simons, while they are lining up a bid for Manchester United winger Garnacho. Chelsea are also keen to offload several players before the transfer deadline, including Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell. They are open to offers for Nicolas Jackson following the signings of Pedro and Delap but have set an extremely high asking price for the Senegal striker. Managing Tottenham as mega-money double transfer sealed and £20m star leaves
Tottenham have been busy this summer, but are expected to make a few more moves for some expensive transfer targets before the window shuts, having sustained some significant injury blows Tottenham are looking to snap back from their UEFA Super Cup disappointment by strengthening their squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Spurs were left heartbroken on Wednesday after a penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, despite leading 2-0 with just minutes remaining. The Champions League winners managed to claw back two late goals before triumphing in the shootout. With no time to dwell on the loss, the north London club are now focusing on their league opener at home to Burnley this Saturday, and manager Thomas Frank knows there's still work to be done to bolster his squad. Despite welcoming seven new faces this summer, Mohammed Kudus is arguably the only one who is likely to be a nailed-on started week in and week out. The club's pursuit of Eberechi Eze and Savinho has been well-documented as they aim to build on last season's Europa League success and instil a winning mentality at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Here, we take an in-depth look at potential transfers that could be finalised in the coming week... Spurs splash out on Savinho Spurs have been locked in talks with Manchester City over Brazilian starlet Savinho, who had an inconsistent debut season with the Citizens. Despite scoring just one league goal, he ended the season with 16 contributions in 48 games, including 13 assists, following the Club World Cup. The exit of Son Heung-min and an injury to Dejan Kulusevski, which could sideline him for the rest of the year, has left Frank's team a bit thin on the wings, reports Football London, while James Maddison will need replacing as well following his ACL injury. Talks of a £43m deal for the 21-year-old were reported, but according to recent claims, it could take a record-breaking fee for Spurs to lure the Brazilian away from Pep Guardiola's squad. Dominic Solanke is Spurs' current record signing, having joined for £65m last summer. Savinho's agent is said to have indicated that it could take an offer of £67m to tempt City into selling. The players is understood to be open to the idea of joining Spurs and a bid is expected to be lodged in the coming days. With Spurs fighting on four fronts this season, signing a winger with as much potential as Savinho could help them in their chase for further silverware and consistent participation in Europe. Given his age, and the fact Cristiano Ronaldo voted for him as his first choice to win the 2024 Kopa Award over Lamine Yamal, Savinho looks a wise investment for the future. Break transfer record for Eze There's a chance that Spurs could sign Savinho without breaking their transfer record, but they might have no choice with Eze. Spurs' interest in Eze this summer is well-known, and the latest update in the transfer saga suggests the club are preparing to make an official offer for the Crystal Palace star. Fresh from winning the Community Shield following the Eagles' triumph over Liverpool on Sunday, the England midfielder could be on his way across London if a deal can be agreed between the two Premier League clubs. While Eze has attracted interest from Arsenal, it appears that Spurs have taken the lead in the race for the 27-year-old's signature. If Spurs manage to secure the talented player, they will reportedly need to pay what would be a record-breaking £68m fee, which is said to be Eze's release clause. There are reports that claim that the clause expires before the start of the Premier League season. The former QPR star is reportedly tempted by the chance to feature in the Champions League whilst staying in the capital, though reports indicate Tottenham value him at approximately £55m – matching what they splashed out to West Ham for Kudus. Adding a player of Eze's quality who can guarantee goals and assists in midfield and looks to be at the peak of his powers could prove to be a game-changing signing for Spurs. Pocketing £20m for fringe player Manor Solomon signed for Spurs in 2023, but the Israeli has featured in merely six matches for the club. A meniscus problem just three months after arriving in north London brought his 2023/24 season to a premature close. The subsequent campaign saw the winger loaned out to Leeds United as he revived his career by becoming instrumental in the Whites' ascent to the Premier League. Whilst he netted 10 goals and contributed 12 assists for Daniel Farke's squad, his summer comeback to Spurs has proved less successful as he missed the club's Asian tour through injury. With players like Kudus, Wilson Odobert, Richarlison, Mathys Tel and Brennan Johnson all positioned above Solomon in the pecking order, Frank might consider selling the 26-year-old. Spurs are reportedly seeking £15m to £20m for his signature, with a Leeds return being discussed, given Farke's frustration with his limited attacking choices. The German was scathing about the club's stuttering efforts to strengthen their forward department as he recently declared: "In comparison to our Championship side, we have not improved in the offence. "We are not prepared yet for a long Premier League season. "We are capable of playing at a good level but in order to be ready and to win games at this level... you need players who can score goals and give assists." Earning £20m on a player signed for free is certainly an opportunity many clubs won't turn their nose up at, and the extra funds could help facilitate the big-money moves for Eze and Savinho.
