MSPiB planting more seeds into the future
Main Street Portsmouth In Bloom is a non-profit powerhouse that makes investments and improvements in the community, with a primary goal of focusing in the downtown area, through beautification, placemaking, and events. The group is used to taking on new projects and experiencing growth years and Executive Director Emily Uldrich says last year was no different.
'2024 was a growth year for us and we are so excited about what we've been able to accomplish,' Uldrich explained. 'We are grateful for our dedicated volunteers. We had over 100 individuals volunteer with our program in 2024 and we could not have made these strides without them.'
One of the areas of massive growth for the nonprofit was the Annual Main Street Portsmouth in Bloom Farmers Market on the Esplanade, which runs May through October.
'We were thrilled with the 2024 farmers market season,' Uldrich said. 'Of course, I have to give all credit to the vendors, because, without the quality of vendor goods, including produce, baked goods, canned goods and crafts, the market would not be what it is. We are proud to display the bounty of culture within our region and all of our amazing entrepreneurs.'
The group offered farmers market awards for the first time last year, had a larger footprint of vendors than ever before, hosted many themed visitor days, and more. Uldrich says they're looking at ways to expand the event even more in 2025, and some ideas are already set in stone.
'We are looking forward to expanding our farmers market voucher program with the help of the Scioto Foundation. We were awarded a Scioto 365 grant, which will double the number of vouchers we will be able to give out. Our Healthy Bucks program expansion will not only provide healthy food to people but it will invest that money back into local business owner pockets that goes back into the economy.'
Another area of growth for the organization included expansions to the non-profits pocket park, 535 on Second.
The park was completed years ago, behind the façade of a collapsed building. The organization received ownership, cleared out trees and weeds, secured the façade, paved the space, added garden beds, steel features, furniture and accomplished a lot in turning it into a space the community has fallen in love with. It has been used for engagements, weddings, parties, and everyday use.
An expansion in the rear of the property had been planned just before Uldrich stepped into her role and she worked with Sue Burke to get it done in 2024. The expansion doubles the size of the park and adds a sensory garden feature. In 2025, the group finalized the fencing around the park and is ready to finalize the expansion.
'The expansion to 535 on Second came after we were sent to a conference in St. Louis and saw a section within an arboretum that was a sensory garden,' Burke said. 'We loved what they accomplished with the space and had been considering what to do with the rest of the property, so we got to work making it happen. It feels great to be moving so fast on the project, now with pavement, flower beds, and a gate. We are looking forward to planting it again this year.'
Burke said the sensory garden appeals to many and it is a unique experience for those in the area.
'The sensory garden is unique and wonderful to all, but we were very happy to have an opening last year with the Scioto County Board of DD, which is a big fraction of the community that can relax and enjoy the garden through different senses in a quiet space,' Burke explained.
Of course, the work for MSPiB is never done, even at 535 on Second and Burke says more is always to come.
'We look forward to continuing to give the space new life, putting in new gardens and flowers, and decorating it for the various seasons,' Burke said. 'It has been such a peaceful place that so many have fallen in love with.'
The group continued many of its events and features throughout the year and closed 2024 by examining applicants for the Building Improvement Grant Program, making awards.
Uldrich said the organization made awards last month and said that, 'Our Building Improvement Grant winners this year are Grace Community Church at Bigelow for $10,000 for the repair of the historic brick chimneys on their roof, $7,500 to the Columbia for façade repairs and restoration, and $7,500 to DW Rentals, which was the Euton Building on Sixth Street.'
The board of directors, executive director and volunteers are ready to carry the organization into another busy year of success.
'Main Street Portsmouth in Bloom is thrilled about the start of 2025,' Uldrich said. 'We had a successful Ellen Vetter Memorial Chocolate Walk with 30 participating downtown businesses and 300 community members walking. We just held our Annual Celebrate Portsmouth Dinner, where we honored our outstanding volunteers of 2024. We had three winners from our Design Committee, better known as the Flower Girls, which included Mimi Clausing, Jackie Lucero and Jani Sturgell. From our Promotions and Events Committee, we honored Sharon Bender. As we work into 2025, we are expanding our collaborations and partnering with the Portsmouth Scioto County Visitor's Bureau, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Shawnee State Park, Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District and the OSU extension office to bring a series of events for the nature of the area that connects downtown. The first was the bald eagle viewing event, which had over 100 people in attendance. We're looking forward to the next event, which is on native pollinating plants in June.'

Could Celtics make a realistic push for Giannis Antetokounmpo trade?
Big changes are on the horizon for the Celtics and teams across the NBA this offseason. One of the biggest names that could be on the move is Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo amid a dreary future outlook in Milwaukee following three consecutive first-round exits. There will be plenty of suitors for Antetokounmpo across the league if the former MVP is made available this summer by the Bucks, but the Celtics are generally not one of the teams brought up as expected top bidders around the league. However, Brian Windhorst of suggested Thursday on Get Up that the Celtics could be a potential suitor if the big man prefers to stay in the Eastern Conference. Advertisement 'I think Boston was more interesting before the devastating Tatum injury because I don't know what you can possibility get from Jayson Tatum next year,' Windhorst said. 'Before that, I think that was a real conversation and maybe it still could be.' So what exactly would need to happen for the Celtics to put themselves in position to make a bid in a hypothetical Antetokounmpo sweepstakes? Let's look at the moving parts involved and the factors Brad Stevens and company would need to weigh if given a chance to get involved. COULD CELTICS TRADE FOR GIANNIS WITH SECOND APRON RESTRICTIONS? The challenges of the new CBA are numerous, but they are especially cumbersome for a team beginning the offseason in the second apron like the Celtics. Boston's current payroll commitments for next year stand at $227 million, which is $20 million above the second apron ($207 million). Advertisement Boston cannot take back more salary than they send out in a trade while over the second apron, and they also can't aggregate players (combine salaries) in a deal while over the second apron. Once Boston drops under the second apron (which can technically happen at the competition of a trade), aggregating salaries would be permitted. With Antetokounmpo ($54.1 million) making more money next season than any player on the Celtics roster, a trade as of now is not even legal. Boston would need to move at least $74 million in salary during or before a hypothetical Giannis trade to make room for Antetokounmpo's massive salary while staying under the second apron ($207 million) at the completion of the deal. That path is doable, but certainly would involve numerous maneuvers by Boston's front office. The Celtics would either need to do some salary dumps (at least $20 million) before the trade itself or find multiple teams to get involved in the main deal and be willing to take on excess salary Boston would send out. The Bucks can technically take back up to 125 percent of any salary they send out in a trade this offseason but adding payroll certainly won't be their preference if they are dealing away Antetokounmpo this summer. Boston would either need to sweeten the pot to get a third team to take on some money or trade away players that will command a big asset return that could be used in the deal (while also reducing salary). Advertisement WHAT WOULD A LEGAL GIANNIS TRADE STRUCTURE LOOK LIKE FOR CELTICS? Once the Celtics figure out a way to get under the second apron by the end of a potential deal, the structure would be quite simple to satisfy salary matching rules. Antetokounmpo ($54.1 million) and Jaylen Brown ($53.1 million) meet the criteria for salary matching. From a compensation standpoint, any competitive offer for Antetokounmpo from Boston would have to start with Brown and expand from there. Whether the Bucks would want to build with Brown or flip him for assets is another question. How far exactly would Boston be willing to go beyond Brown in an offer would be the intriguing question. The Bucks would likely have little interest in bringing back an aging Jrue Holiday or an expiring contract in Kristaps Porzingis at their salary numbers. Boston's future tradable draft capital probably doesn't hold a ton of appeal if Tatum and Antetokounmpo are going to be on a roster together for the foreseeable future. Advertisement With so many other competitive suitors around the league in a potential Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, Boston would need to include something significant beyond Brown to be in the mix. Would Payton Pritchard's terrific value contract be enough? Would Derrick White become a possibility if the Celtics had more coming back from the Bucks or other teams in the deal than just Antetokounmpo? These are the tough questions Boston would need to ask internally upon considering getting involved in these types of trade talks. Of course, several other big questions would influence what Boston might be willing to offer. WHAT DO THE BUCKS WANT FOR GIANNIS IF HE ASKS OUT? The Bucks don't control their own first round draft capital until 2030 so it's hard to figure out what their gameplan would be if Giannis demands out, short of figuring out a way to get those picks/pick swaps back from the Blazers and Pelicans. If Milwaukee wants to stay respectable in the present, a trade package headlined by Jaylen Brown (under contract through 2028-29) would be nothing to sneeze at. Advertisement However, if the team is intent on beginning a massive reboot/teardown, Brown's age and big salary may not interest them as much as cheap promising young talent and a pile of future draft picks. In that scenario, the Celtics would need to do a lot of work finding those assets via other teams since there are plenty of other teams currently better positioned (Spurs, Rockets, Thunder) to build big offers including those things. WHERE DOES GIANNIS WANT TO GO? Windhorst laid out the case Thursday for Antetokounmpo wanting to stay in the East if he asks out of Milwaukee by pointing out the Western Conference is stacked with potential top-tier contenders next season and beyond, while there are few intimidating cores in the East. How appealing the Celtics would be to Antetokounmpo is a fair question to ask after Tatum's Achilles tear. Would he be willing to punt on another season in his prime as a top contender to wait for Tatum in 2026-27 and beyond? Or would joining a younger or win-now ready squad elsewhere hold more appeal? Advertisement Antetokounmpo does hold some cards in this scenario given his contract situation. He's only under contract through 2027-28 with a player option for his final season looming he will certainly opt out of. Any team trading a massive haul for Antetokounmpo will want to know he wants to stay long term and perhaps will request an extension as part of the deal. If Antetokounmpo isn't willing to do that in some places, those suitors may reduce their offers or drop out entirely of the bidding. The Bucks may also move Antetokounmpo to a preferred destination (if given comparable offers) as a show of good faith for their longtime All-Star. Whether the Celtics end up as a preferred destination on Giannis' list (if he makes one) will be mandatory for the Celtics to consider any deal. Trading an All-Star like Jaylen Brown doesn't make sense unless you get a long-term commitment for another one. WOULD THERE BE ENOUGH LEFT FOR CELTICS TO BLOW UP REST OF ROSTER AROUND TATUM TO BRING IN GIANNIS? Big changes could be coming to the Celtics roster this offseason anyway but a move for Giannis would be seismic. Outside of Tatum, pretty much any player on the Celtics roster would not be safe given the amount of cap gymnastics that would be required to pull off that type of blockbuster. Naturally, the Celtics would want to hold onto some key role players but who would be required to pull off said deal is another matter. Advertisement Ultimately, the question the front office would have to ask is whether building around Tatum, Antetokounmpo and whatever is left over a better path than building with a Tatum/Brown/White/Pritchard core with financial limitations a couple years down the line? If one thinks it's not possible to viably build around Tatum and Antetokounmpo with what's leftover after a hypothetical deal, then it's also fair to wonder if the challenge would be even greater to retool a contender with Tatum and Brown making supermax salaries under the harsh restrictions of the new CBA. Brown and Antetokounmpo will be making the same amount essentially for the next three years of their deals. It's possible the Celtics don't have enough to trade for Antetokounmpo (if Bucks executives want to go much younger or focus on draft picks with a return). The All-Star may not want to come to Boston or prefer another win-now destination in the wake of Tatum's injury as well. In those cases, all of these questions quickly become moot. Antetokounmpo also hasn't asked out yet either, although it seems inevitable a divorce is coming amid a bleak future for Milwaukee. However, if Antetokounmpo asks out though and prefers to stay in the East for competitive reasons, these hypotheticals about Boston's best long-term path become fascinating in a hurry. Getting involved strictly to block another East suitor from landing a top-5 player would need to be a consideration while weighing Boston's most promising path back towards sustaining a contender. There will be plenty of fallout for the Celtics one way or another if Antetokounmpo ends up being moved in the coming months. Whether they end up having a chance to become a suitor in that process is worth watching. Read the original article on MassLive.

NBA trade rumors: The latest on Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, Cooper Flagg pick
The NBA Finals aren't even here yet, but that hasn't stopped the trade rumor mill from reaching a higher gear. Judging from what is being said around the league, multiple All-Stars could find themselves joining new teams this offseason. Here are all the latest rumors, whispers and inklings going around the NBA right now, starting with the former MVP and his several suitors. Who's going after Giannis Antetokounmpo? It's no secret the Milwaukee Bucks have good reason to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. After years of contending and the first championship in 50 years, the team's supporting cast behind Antetokounmpo has become a significant concern, from Damian Lillard's torn Achilles to Kyle Kuzma's existence. Advertisement So any team in need of an MVP-level, defensively dominant power forward is going to be on the phone, even if the price is likely to start with a young player or two and end with every first-round pick that isn't nailed down. Antetokounmpo himself is going into the offseason "open-minded" about a possible new home, per ESPN's Shams Charania. One of those teams is the Toronto Raptors, as the Toronto Star's Doug Smith reports there is mutual interest in a deal there. That's couched with the odds of a deal being "long," but Toronto is looking for a new way forward after the slow break-up of their 2019 championship team, which beat Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in the Eastern Conference finals. Giannis Antetkounmpo could be a popular man on the NBA trade market. (Photo by) (John Fisher via Getty Images) Another possibility is the Houston Rockets, whom The Athletic's Kelly Iko reports are targeting Antetokounmpo. However, the team has reportedly experienced recent uncertainty over whether the Bucks will actually part with their star, to say nothing of the price he is likely to command. Advertisement The Brooklyn Nets could also get involved, per the New York Post, and then there's the haunting idea of an Antetokounmpo-Stephen Curry team-up. We don't know how seriously the Golden State Warriors are there, but you can't ignore one of their players talking about the possibility on television. Suns reportedly lowering asking price for Kevin Durant Kevin Durant's Phoenix Suns were an expensive disaster this season, and all parties are reportedly ready to call it a day. We've known this for months. Iko also reported the Suns have been "aggressive" in moving the 36-year-old, with the Rockets in communication there and Phoenix gradually lowering its asking price. Few teams would be a better fit for Durant than Houston, which features a core of young players, a proven coach in Ime Udoka and one of the best defenses in basketball last season. Advertisement In addition to the Rockets, Charania recently reported the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs were all interested in Durant when he was being dangled at the trade deadline, and he expects them to be similarly interested this offseason. Stein also mentioned Minnesota to have "significant interest" in teaming Durant up with Anthony Edwards. Nothing on the Mavericks moving the Cooper Flagg pick yet The Dallas Mavericks got the most unearned fortune of the offseason by winning the NBA Draft Lottery, but the question remains if they will A) stick with the pick and draft generational prospect Cooper Flagg or B) trade the pick for what would be one of the biggest hauls in the offseason. Advertisement Right now, there has been very little indication the team is considering Option B. Veteran reporter Marc Stein reported weeks ago there's "no chance" Dallas moves off the Flagg pick and head coach Jason Kidd was talking Tuesday about focusing on Flagg, though with the caveat "we all understand that things change." Flagg represents a significant fork in the road, as the Mavericks quite loudly committed to an older core of Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving when they traded away Luka Dončić at only 25 years old. Expecting Flagg to be instantly ready as a member of a championship Big 3 would be a heck of a bet, but this front office has shown itself to be nothing if not bold. Is the Cavaliers' Core 4 really a Core 2? The Cleveland Cavaliers won 64 games this season and looked like an emerging power in the East, right up until the Indiana Pacers ripped their hearts out. That begs the question: is this a team that should be just running it back? Advertisement The answer appears to be "Yes, unless they get a particularly good offer on a couple guys." Chris Fedor said on the "Wine and Gold Talk" podcast that while the Cavaliers consider stars Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley to be "untouchables," he has gotten the sense that the team could consider deals for Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland. Detroit Pistons looking into Naz Reid, Myles Turner The Detroit Pistons took a nice leap this season and want to take the next step with a big man who can help space the floor. Per Stein, they have an eye on both the Timberwolves' Naz Reid and the Pacers' Myles Turner. Advertisement Turner is a pending free agent and could be available, but he looked pretty happy after the Pacers' Eastern Conference title and seems a decent bet to re-sign with Indiana, which certainly has cap space for him. Reid, meanwhile, has a $15 million player option for next season that he is almost certain to opt out of. Minnesota had one of the highest payrolls in the NBA last offseason, so this would likely be the center to chase.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Next Team Odds: Spurs, Rockets, Raptors In Mix
The Bucks are slight favorites to hold onto Giannis Antetokounmpo, but both San Antonio and Houston have shorter than 5-to-1 odds to be the Greek Freak's next destination. The Bucks are slight favorites to hold onto Giannis Antetokounmpo, but both San Antonio and Houston have shorter than 5-to-1 odds to be the Greek Freak's next destination. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Following a one-sided loss to the Pacers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs and a torn Achilles that will sideline Damian Lillard until next summer, the Milwaukee Bucks are likely in for a summer of massive change. Obviously, the biggest question is whether we've seen the last of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in a Milwaukee jersey. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on May 12 that Giannis was "open-minded about exploring whether his best long-term fit is remaining in Milwaukee or playing elsewhere." We're still a long way from Antetokounmpo -- who is under contract with the Bucks through '27-28, with a player option after the '26-27 season -- formally requesting a trade out of Milwaukee. At the same time, it's fair to assume that sportsbooks like DraftKings wouldn't be offering odds on his next team (or making them as short as they are) if there weren't at least some smoke here. Giannis Antetokounmpo Next Team Odds The odds below come from DraftKings (as of June 4). Fine print, from DK: "First Regular Season minute played to be for which NBA team? [2025-26 only]" Note: While DraftKings offers odds for all 30 teams in this market, we're listing the eight that currently have the shortest odds (20-to-1 or shorter). Bucks (-140) Spurs (+380) Rockets (+450) Raptors (+800) Mavericks (+1200) Thunder (+1300) Knicks (+1600) Nets (+2000) Giannis Antetokounmpo Next Team Breakdown, Prediction The first question here is a two-parter: A) How much stock do you put in the previously mentioned ESPN report on Giannis being open to a move? B) Is Milwaukee ready to begin a long post-Giannis rebuild? Starting with the first piece of this, yes, it's easy to imagine the Greek Freak being ready to start over with a new franchise. When he previously expressed concerns about the viability of the Bucks roster, Milwaukee ownership/management heard him loud and clear and took action. They acquired PG Jrue Holiday from the Pelicans in 2020, then went on to win the NBA Finals the following season. Milwaukee also took action in 2023 amid rumblings about Antetokounmpo, acquiring Damian Lillard from Portland. But this summer, if you haven't heard, there's no realistic path to upgrading the Bucks roster the way they did with the deals for Holiday and Lillard. At the risk of oversimplifying things, that -- in a nutshell -- is why there's a real chance Giannis could be on the move this summer. As for part B of this question, if* Giannis decides he wants out and is willing to play hardball to force a trade, the answer is probably "who cares?" *As of June 4, this is still a big "if." It has, however, repeatedly been proven that when an NBA star of Giannis's stature pushes for an exit, there's little to nothing his current team can do (see Butler, Jimmy for the best/most recent example). Best Bet On Giannis Antetokounmpo's Next Team: Toronto Raptors When betting on a potential trade that may or may not materialize, I recommend looking at the options with larger payouts than what you'll get if Giannis goes to the Spurs (+380) or Rockets (+450). That brings me to the Raptors, whose odds have moved from 10-to-1 to 8-to-1 in the last 48 hours. The fact that Toronto's odds in this market are shorter than they were earlier this week doesn't guarantee anything, but that development shouldn't be ignored, either. I don't expect the Spurs, who have two young stars in Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, plus the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, to commit to the shake-up necessary to land a player like Giannis this offseason. The biggest reason not to bet on the Rockets to land Giannis is the fact that they have the shortest odds to get Kevin Durant (+225 at DK as of June 4). Why The Raptors Are An Intriguing Destination For Giannis I don't just like Toronto as a Giannis destination by default or because of the enticing price, though. An underrated storyline this summer is that Toronto Team President Masai Ujiri is entering a contract year, as his deal with the team is set to expire next summer. The exec who brought Kawhi Leonard (and a ring) to Toronto in 2018-19 is a good bet to make a splash of some sort this summer for a franchise that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2022. More importantly, the Raptors have a 23-year-old All-Star in Scottie Barnes, a proven veteran wing in Brandon Ingram and three solid pieces under 27 years old in RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and Gradey Dick. At mininum, there's more than enough smoke here (including recent reports by the Toronto Star's Doug Smith and ESPN's Brian Windhorst) to justify a small bet, like 0.25 or 0.10 units, on the Raptors landing Giannis at +800.
