
Arnold Schwarzenegger's vital step for full health past your 50s
"If you rest, you rust" declared Arnold Schwarzenegger, who at 77 is sharing the best thing he did in his 50s to maintain health while ageing. Speaking at the CNBC CEO Council Summit in Arizona, the actor emphasised the importance of staying active: "It is extremely important to not stop moving when you're 50 or 60 just because of joint problems.
"If you stop movement, then this is the first step to death. If you rest, you rust."
He stressed that continuing to move is key to healthy ageing, particularly in one's 50s and 60s. The intensity of the activity isn't the focus, though, as Schwarzenegger assured fans don't need to be taking on his personal routine.
The iconic Terminator actor suggested: "Do something. It doesn't matter to me if you play tennis, if you go skiing, if you play soccer, or if you lift weights...but do something."
Arnold's advice is testament to his new role as Chief Movement Officer for Zimmer Biomet, a position he accepted last year. Ever since, he's been using his platform to help people overcome their fear of medical technology which is holding them back from exercising in later life.
Despite his portrayals of indestructible characters on the big screen, Schwarzenegger has weathered several serious health challenges. He has undergone two open-heart surgeries to replace parts of his heart and just last year was fitted with a pacemaker due to a genetic heart condition.
He's also undergone a hip replacement, which he's turned into a positive message with his ' You'll Be Back ' campaign. He commented: "I want to let people know and give them the courage to get those things fixed and continue moving. Don't let anything get in the way. Exercise, exercise, exercise."
The campaign aims to motivate people to stop avoiding treatment, re-engage with physical activity, and enhance their overall health as they grow older. This is especially pertinent for the one in four Americans who suffer from knee pain.
According to CNBC, the Austrian celebrity maintains a daily fitness regimen that includes an hour of cycling and 45 minutes of weight training. His extensive gym experience has led to some insightful reflections.
He recalled hearing many people complaining about having to skip exercises or adjust their routines as they were told they'd need procedures like shoulder replacements. However, they were afraid of the surgery and opted to let their exercise suffer instead o getting treatment.
The ex-governor stressed that surgery should not be the first solution for joint issues. However, he pointed out that many are unaware of the remarkable technological advancements at their disposal.
Reflecting on his own hip surgery, he remembered: "When I did it, I had to stay in the hospital for days and had months of therapy." In comparison, he said current technologies can enable patients to "walk out" after the operation.

How to properly store eggs in the fridge Ensure you place your eggs on a middle shelf in your fridge, not inside the fridge door. The fluctuating temperatures caused by the door opening and closing can lead to condensation. It's also crucial to keep eggs in the carton they come in from the supermarket, as it's designed to shield the eggs from bacteria. Avoid storing eggs in an egg caddy. Despite their popularity, a caddy won't provide the necessary protection for the egg. Rebecca explained: "Egg cartons are also designed to minimise water loss from the eggs and prevent cross-contamination of unwanted flavours from other foods lurking in your fridge. No wonder the industry has long stuck with this classic carton design!". How to check if an egg is fresh If stored correctly at a cool temperature in the fridge, eggs will stay fresh for up to six weeks longer. However, if you're concerned that an egg may have spoiled, try the glass test. All you need to do is pop the egg into a glass that's half-filled with water. If the egg floats, bin it as it's gone off, but if it drops to the bottom then it's still safe to consume. Rebecca explained: "When handling eggs, always exercise caution. If I pick up an egg with a visible crack and signs of leakage, I toss it. If it has a fine hairline crack, I'll either perform the glass test or discard it. I don't take any unnecessary risks in my kitchen. Remember the saying: "When in doubt, throw it out."

You can now give yourself an at-home flu vaccine
For the first time, Americans can get their seasonal flu vaccine at home. Starting Friday, eligible adults in 34 states can order the FluMist Home - a nasal spray - online ahead of the upcoming flu season, European drugmaker AstraZeneca announced, calling it a 'transformational moment in the evolution of influenza protection.' FluMist was previously only available at pharmacies or doctors' offices. Now, interested people can go to to order the sprays, potentially saving time spent at a clinic or drug store. Once received, the vaccine should be stored in the refrigerator until it is used. Then, people between the ages of 18 and 49 years old can self-administer the vaccine. FluMist Home can be given to children and teens between the ages of two and 17 years old. A full dose is one spray in each nostril. FluMist may not prevent infection in everyone who takes it, but it works similarly to vaccines for measles and chickenpox. It contains weakened versions of viruses that trigger the immune system in the nose and throat, teaching it to build up immunity without causing infection. In rare cases, FluMist may cause serious side effects, including allergic reactions. But the most common side effects are a runny or stuffy nose, a sore throat and a fever of over 100 degrees. Some people should not take FluMist, including those with severe allergies to eggs, the vaccine's ingredients, or other flu vaccines, and kids who take aspirin or medicines containing aspirin. Children should also not take aspirin for four weeks after they get FluMist, unless told to do so by a healthcare provider.
