BMI Maintains Positive Outlook For Consumer Spending In Malaysia Over 2025, 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- BMI, a Fitch solutions company, has maintained its broadly positive outlook for consumer spending in Malaysia over 2025, with the country's healthy macroeconomic outlook driving real-term growth in household incomes.
With inflation averaging lower than expected in May, BMI lowered its forecast for headline inflation to average at 1.9 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2025, down from 2.1 per cent previously, and only slightly up from an average 1.8 per cent in 2024.
It added that this remained low enough to support household purchasing power.
"Overall, we forecast household spending to grow by 3.8 per cent y-o-y over 2025 in real terms to RM930.7 billion, up from MYR896.9 billion in 2024.
"As a result, household spending has returned close to pre-COVID levels of growth, where it grew at a real average rate of 5.2 per cent y-o-y during the 2015-2019 period.
"However, spending will continue to be restrained by Malaysian consumers' high levels of indebtedness and the correspondingly high debt servicing costs," it said in its 'Malaysia Consumer Outlook: Strong Growth Forecast Over 2025 and 2026' commentary today.
Looking ahead to 2026, BMI expect consumer spending to accelerate, underpinned by strong gross domestic product (GDP) growth and a stable employment outlook.
Consumer confidence and willingness to spend would be further supported by a stable inflationary environment and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) back in loosening mode, cutting its benchmark interest rate by a further 25 basis points from a forecast 2.75 per cent in December 2025 to 2.50 per cent by end-2026.
"Therefore, we forecast total household spending growth to be at 5.0 per cent y-o-y in real terms for 2025, taking spending to RM977.3 billion," it said.

Malaysia pledges ASEAN unity for regional stability and peace

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will ensure that ASEAN will be stronger and move in step or in tandem for global stability, prosperity and peace, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said Malaysia is committed to driving the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), accelerating the ASEAN Power Grid and finalising the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement to ensure an open, fair and sustainable economic future for the 660 million people in the region. 'Therefore, ASEAN will continue to speak out, ensure harmony and lead with determination, and not just follow the global order,' he said in a Facebook post today. The Prime Minister said the world is currently beset by great power tensions, a gruelling geo-economic race and the collapse of multilateralism. Anwar said in this regard, ASEAN must not weaken, divide and lag behind but must unite to strengthen ASEAN's role and ensure that the region's voice continues to be respected. For example, he said Malaysia as the 2025 ASEAN Chairman has led efforts to reconcile Cambodia and Thailand, two neighbouring countries that were almost dragged into a more serious conflict. 'With the active involvement of China and the United States, we have succeeded in reaching an agreement on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. 'This is proof that diplomacy must underpin our efforts to embody peace and firm leadership,' he said. Anwar, who is currently on a working visit to Indonesia, also announced that he was appearing for the first time at the ASEAN Secretariat Building based in Jakarta in conjunction with Malaysia's important role as ASEAN Chairman this year. 'It (Anwar's arrival at the ASEAN Secretariat Building) among other things underlines and highlights the symbol of our unwavering commitment to the strong and noble ideals and spirit of ASEAN,' he said. - Bernama

ASEAN's Position As Regional Economic Powerhouse Remains Intact -- BNM Governor

BUSINESS By & Karina Imran KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- ASEAN's position as an emerging regional economic powerhouse remains intact, as does its commitment to deepen economic integration, such as in the area of finance, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. He said efforts undertaken on economic integration include initiatives such as an interoperable payment infrastructure that aims to strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The central bank governor said there is a growing momentum toward economic mutual-reliance and deeper regional collaboration, and as a result, continuous progress in integration could be expected given the substantial room for growth in these areas. For instance, Abdul Rasheed cited the intra-ASEAN trade, which currently accounts for 22 per cent of the grouping's total trade volume and is far behind the European Union's approximately 50 per cent. Encouragingly, he highlighted that the region now has the infrastructure in place to make this ambition a reality. 'One key enabler is the interoperable payment infrastructure,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview. Abdul Rasheed said innovations such as cross-border quick response (QR), or commonly known as QR payment systems, are revolutionising how businesses transact. 'So, anyone from Malaysia can sell the product they manufacture, for example, in Thailand, and receive payment instantly,' he said, adding that such capability was unheard of just a few years ago.
