A simple new savings habit among Americans is helping the US dodge a recession... and grow their wealth

Daily Mail27-07-2025
Americans have been surprisingly strategic with their cash.
New research finds that more US consumers are shifting money out of traditional checking and savings accounts and into financial vehicles that offer investment income.
It's a trend that helps explain the surprising strength of the US economy — which continues to grow despite high inflation and uncertainty around tariffs.
The analysis, conducted by the JPMorganChase Institute, examined the accounts of 4.7 million households.
Researchers found that when including brokerage accounts, money market funds, and certificates of deposit, people's total cash reserves are actually rising.
That finding offers a fresh perspective at a time when standard bank balances, adjusted for inflation, remain flat and historically low.
'Families across many income bands are now seeing a turnaround in their total cash,' said Chris Wheat, president of the institute.
The shift explains a previously puzzling economic contradiction: consumer spending has remained strong, even though checking and savings balances appeared stagnant.
So far, this earnings season, companies have continually reported that consumers keep spending cash at record numbers.
GM reported a seven percent increase in US car sales. Hasbro said its revenue also shot up seven percent. Delta Airlines beat Wall Street's profit guidance.
Some consumers have even had cash lying around to invest in new meme stocks.
But that continued spending and stagnant wage growth might have just been a product of Americans making smarter financial moves.
Wheat also noted that in today's higher-interest environment, consumers parking cash in accounts that yield returns, rather than making risky, long-term investments.
Still, he cautioned that the trend might be temporary, and it's unclear whether it will continue.
JPMorganChase Institute also uncovered that the investment shifts were more popular for middle- and high-income earners.
The analysis also found that households earning under $35,000 saw their total cash balances increase at an annual rate of 5 to 6 percent.
It found the lowest income quartile typically holds just over $1,000 in bank accounts.
The median balances of the highest income quartile exceed $8,000.
While some Americans have been parking their cash in smart places, other metrics of financial health have shown some serious warning signs.
Millions of consumers are combating inflation with a record-setting arsenal of credit card debt — to the tune of $1.18 trillion.
Meanwhile, a record number of consumers are turning to an inceasing array of on-demand pay options and buy-now, pay-later microloans.

Tyson Foods boosts revenue forecast as chicken sales rise

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Tyson Foods (TSN.N), opens new tab raised its annual revenue forecast and reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings on Monday as consumers' increased appetite for chicken helped offset steep losses in its beef business. Shares rallied 4% after dropping on Friday to their lowest level since February 14 amid pressure from a nationwide cattle shortage. The herd dwindled to its smallest size on record this summer after a years-long drought dried up pastures used for grazing, forcing meat companies like Tyson to pay more to buy cattle to slaughter. Tight supplies also drove beef prices to record highs this year in a blow to consumers. However, Tyson benefited in the quarter that ended on June 28 from increased sales volumes and prices for its chicken. Chicken remains a more affordable protein compared to beef and pork, CFRA analyst Arun Sundaram said. Quarterly profit margins jumped for Tyson's chicken business, along with its pork and prepared foods units, compared to a year earlier. "The only soft spot in our business is the beef segment," CEO Donnie King said. Tyson expects fiscal 2025 revenue to grow 2% to 3%, compared with its prior forecast of flat-to-up 1%. The company raised its annual income outlook for the chicken business to between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion from its previous forecast of $1 billion to $1.3 billion. Its beef business is now expected to lose $375 million to $475 million, though, compared with a previous estimate of $200 million to $400 million in losses. King said ranchers likely started the process of rebuilding the cattle herd by keeping female cows, known as heifers, on farms for breeding. Supplies will remain tight because it takes roughly two years to raise full-grown cattle. Tyson reduced processing line speeds at beef plants due to low supplies in the meantime, said Brady Stewart, who oversees the company's beef business. "We like that strategy moving forward," he said. Quarterly volumes in Tyson's beef business fell 3.1%, but sales grew 6.9% as prices jumped 10%. The segment had an adjusted operating loss of $151 million, including a goodwill impairment charge of $343 million. That compared with losses of $69 million a year earlier. Quarterly chicken sales rose 3.5%, with volumes up 2.4%. Tyson permanently closed U.S. chicken plants that employed thousands of workers in recent years to increase efficiency. "Tyson's portfolio is leaning heavily on chicken," said Alex Jarombek, senior analyst for research firm Consumer Edge. The company's total quarterly net sales increased 4% to $13.88 billion, beating analysts' estimate of $13.56 billion, according to LSEG data. Tyson posted adjusted earnings per share of 91 cents, above the estimate for 78 cents.

NBA owner makes record $325m bid to buy WNBA team and relocate to Boston... but sale could have competition

The group led by former NBA owner Steve Pagliuca has officially made a record $325million offer to by the Connecticut Sun. However, his bid might not be the only one coming. While the Pagliuca group made the bid with the intention of moving the Sun to Boston, starting to play games in Beantown as early as 2027, another bidder may be working to purchase the franchise as well, per Front Office Sports. Former Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry is believed to be in 'active competition' with the Pagliuca group to be the next owner of the Sun. Lasry differs from Pagliuca, hoping to keep the team in Connecticut. The Pagliuca bid to purchase the team was accepted by the Mohegan Tribe and was presented to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert last month. However, the move is still pending league approval, as it was never brought before the WNBA's Board of Governors. Multiple outlets reported Saturday that the offer was for $325 million, which would be the most ever paid for a professional women's sports franchise. Pagliuca's group also plans to contribute another $100 million to build a practice facility, per the reports. Pagliuca posted an update of the'"possible acquisition' by his PagsGroup on X on Sunday night. 'An investor group led by PagsGroup, and supported by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy and Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee, has offered to acquire the Connecticut Sun with the objective of keeping New England's WNBA team in New England,' the statement read. 'No transaction has been agreed yet.' The statement, although it did not specifically name Boston as a new home for the franchise, said the group's goal is 'to play in larger capacity arenas in New England.' 'We believe our record-setting offer and deep commitment to growing the WNBA in the region that is home to the most passionate basketball fans in the nation will significantly benefit the league, the team, and all its fans,' read the PagsGroup's update. The Sun have called Connecticut home since 2003. They play home games at Mohegan Sun Arena, a 10,000-seat facility in Uncasville, Conn. Three WNBA franchises do not have an NBA team that they share a city with, with Seattle and Las Vegas occupying larger markets that have hosted the NBA's Play-In Tournament Finals or an NBA franchise in the past. The Sun hold the league's worst record at 5-22 this season after making the playoffs in each of the eight previous campaigns.
