There's no question that steak and hamburgers contribute to global warming, driven by cows' potent methane burps and their wide-ranging grazing habits. But a warming planet with intensifying extreme weather is also affecting the price of your steak and hamburgers.After years of drought, pastures haven't been producing enough grass to feed cattle. So ranchers have been sending their animals to the slaughterhouse earlier, cutting back herds even as Americans eat more beef. This is sending prices to record highs.Average ground beef prices in city supermarkets surpassed $6 a pound in June, while the cost of uncooked beef steaks approached $11.50 a pound. Those levels are the highest in a decade, according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics data.The upward march of prices illustrates a phenomenon known as climate inflation , in which droughts, heat waves, floods and wildfires raise prices for everything from home insurance to groceries. While some price hikes are so far proving temporary, others are longer-lasting, like beef, which is expected to stay expensive for at least the next few years.'This is one indicator of how climate change will affect our food system, and it's playing itself out in beef right now,' says Ben Lilliston, director of rural strategies and climate change at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit. 'You're seeing it in other commodities, like coffee.' US beef prices are spiking after years of drought in areas where cattle are raised. In the southwestern US in particular, which includes cattle-producing areas like California's San Joaquin Valley, drought has exceeded historical expectations over the last quarter-century, says Brad Rippey, a USDA meteorologist.Scientists have found that global warming's higher temperatures make droughts more likely to happen in some places and more severe. For example, a 2020 study that examined anomalously dry conditions in the western US and northern Mexico between 2000 and 2018 determined that climate change contributed to nearly half of that drought's severity.Drought conditions in the US in recent years were also enhanced by several instances of the naturally-occurring La Niña climate pattern, which tends to leave portions of the US drier than usual, Rippey says. Ranchers have some options, including feeding their herds alternatives to pasture grass, such as hay. But as dry conditions continue, selling the cattle begins to make more financial sense than buying the expensive feed. US herds have been dwindling for years, and are now smaller than ever even as drought conditions have improved.'The long-term impact is that you have less ability to produce, which is where we find ourselves now after four or five years of this process,' says Derrell Peel, agribusiness professor at Oklahoma State University.Demand from consumers for beef, meanwhile, has grown, which also contributes to higher prices. That generates a trade-off between cashing in on today's high prices and holding animals back for breeding — a process that takes years to pay off. A female calf born this year could be sold, entering next year's beef supply, or it could be bred in 2026 and rear a calf ready for market by roughly 2028. Cattle usually have only one calf at a time, in contrast with other animals like chickens and pigs.Other factors affecting cattle ranching besides drought include higher interest rates and greater costs for inputs ranging from the cattle themselves to feed and equipment.Most cattle spend their lives outdoors, exposing the animals to other hallmarks of climate change like extreme heat. High temperatures can affect cattle's reproductive health and their growth, extending the time and cost of raising animals. In the highest-emissions scenario, it could get so hot by 2050 that fewer parts of the world will be suitable for cattle production, according to the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.Another climate change-related threat is also looming: a deadly parasite known as the screwworm, which was long-ago eradicated in the US but has made a resurgence in Mexico. It thrives in warmer climates, and scientists say that climate change could facilitate the fly's spread. While the majority of American beef is produced domestically, the US routinely imports young cattle from Mexico to fatten up in American feedlots, says David Anderson, a professor and livestock economist at Texas A&M University.The supply of those cattle, the equivalent of about 4% of US calf production, has been intermittently cut off since November because of the threat the screwworm poses. 'On the margin, that's a bunch of animals,' he says. 'That's contributing to high prices.'

Natural Disasters Caused $135 Billion In Economic Losses: Reinsurance Giant Swiss Re
Natural disasters caused $135 billion in economic losses globally in the first half of 2025, fuelled by the Los Angeles wildfires, reinsurer Swiss Re said Wednesday. Swiss Re, which serves as an insurer of insurance companies, said first-half losses were up from the $123 billion in the first half of 2024. The Zurich-based reinsurance giant estimated that of this year's first half losses, $80 billion had been insured -- almost double the 10-year average, in 2025 prices. The Los Angeles blazes in January constitute the largest-ever insured wildfire loss event by far, reaching an estimated $40 billion, said Swiss Re. It said the "exceptional loss severity" of the fires was down to prolonged winds, a lack of rainfall and "some of the densest concentration of high-value single-family residential property in the US". Swiss Re said losses from wildfires had risen sharply over the past decade due to rising temperatures, more frequent droughts and changing rainfall patterns -- plus greater suburban sprawl and high-value asset concentration. "Most fire losses originate in the US and particularly in California, where expansion in hazardous regions has been high," it said. Before 2015, wildfire-related insured losses made up around one per cent of all natural catastrophe claims, but now account for seven per cent. - Hurricane season approaching - Insured losses from severe thunderstorms amounted to $31 billion in the first half of 2025. The second half of the year is usually more costly for insurers due to damage during the North Atlantic hurricane season. If current loss trends continue, global insured losses from natural catastrophes in 2025 could exceed the Swiss Re Institute's projections of $150 billion. "The strongest lever to increase the resilience and safety of communities is to double down on mitigation and adaptation. It's here that everyone can help reduce losses before they occur," said Swiss Re's group chief economist Jerome Haegeli. "While mitigation and adaptation measures come at a price, our research shows that, for example, flood protection measures such as dykes, dams and flood gates are up to 10 times more cost-effective than rebuilding." The March earthquake in Myanmar figured among the major natural disasters in the first six months of the year, with the tremors felt in neighbouring Thailand, India, and China. In Thailand alone, insured losses reached $1.5 billion. Overall, while natural disasters caused $135 billion in economic losses in the first half of 2025, man-made disasters -- which include industrial accidents -- caused another $8 billion in losses, of which $7 billion were insured losses.

Apple To Invest Additional $100 Billion In US: White House Official
Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in the United States, taking its total pledge to $600 billion over the next four years, a senior White House official said Wednesday. The announcement, which was first reported by US media, will be officially made later Wednesday at 4:30 pm (2030 GMT) at a White House event with President Donald Trump. In February, Apple said it would spend more than $500 billion in the United States and hire 20,000 people, with Trump quickly taking credit for the decision. The Silicon Valley-based giant said it was its "largest-ever spend commitment," which came as tech companies battle for dominance in developing artificial intelligence technology. It builds on plans announced in 2021, when the company founded by Steve Jobs said that it would invest $430 billion in the US and add 20,000 jobs over the next five years. Trump, who has pushed US companies to shift manufacturing home by slapping tariffs on trading partners, claimed that his administration was to thank for the investment. Apple reported a quarterly profit of $23.4 billion in late July, topping forecasts despite facing higher costs due to Trump's sweeping levies. Tariffs are essentially a tax paid by companies importing goods to the United States. This means Apple is on the hook for tariffs on iPhones and other products or components it brings into the country from abroad.

Leather, Gems, Jewellery Among Key Sectors Hit Hard By 50% US Tariff
New Delhi: Domestic export sectors such as leather, chemicals, footwear, gems and jewellery, textiles and shrimp will be severely impacted by the imposition of the 50 per cent tariff by the US, say industry experts. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising the total duties to 50 per cent on goods coming from India, as a penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. The United States has imposed additional tariffs or penalty for Russian imports only on India while other buyers such as China and Turkey, have so far escaped such measures. "The tariffs are expected to make Indian goods far costlier in the US, with potential to cut US-bound exports by 40-50 per cent," think tank GTRI said. After the new tariff, it said, organic chemicals' exports to the US will attract additional 54 per cent duty. The other sectors which will attract high duties include carpets (52.9 per cent), apparel - knitted (63.9 per cent), apparel - woven (60.3 per cent), textiles, made ups (59 per cent), diamonds, gold and products (52.1 per cent), machinery and mechanical appliances (51.3 per cent), furniture, bedding, mattresses (52.3 per cent). The 25 per cent duty, announced on July 31, will come into force from August 7 (9.30 am IST). The additional 25 per cent will be implemented by the US from August 27. These will be over and above the existing standard import duty in the US. In 2024-25, the bilateral trade between India and the US stood at USD 131.8 billion (USD 86.5 billion exports and USD 45.3 billion imports). The sectors, which would bear the brunt of 50 per cent duty include textiles/ clothing (10.3 billion), gems and jewellery (12 billion), shrimp (USD 2.24 billion), leather and footwear (USD 1.18 billion), chemicals (2.34 billion), and electrical and mechanical machinery (about USD 9 billion). Kolkata-based seafood exporter and MD of Megaa Moda Yogesh Gupta said that now India's shrimp will become expensive in the US market. "We are already facing huge competition from Ecuador as it has only 15 per cent tariff. Indian shrimp already attracts a 2.49 per cent anti-dumping duty and a 5.77 per cent countervailing duty. After this 25 per cent, the duty will be 33.26 per cent from August 7," Gupta said. The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) said that it is "deeply concerned" about the potential adverse impact of the effective 50 per cent US tariff rate for India. The US is India's largest market for textile and apparel exports. "The US tariff announcement of August 6 is a huge setback for India's textile and apparel exporters as it has further complicated the challenging situation we were already grappling with and will significantly weaken our ability to compete effectively vis-à-vis many other countries for a larger share of the US market," it said. It urged the government to urgently take steps to help the sector during these hugely testing times. Colin Shah, MD, Kama Jewelry, said this move is a severe setback for Indian exports, with nearly 55 per cent of India's shipments to the US market directly affected. The 50 per cent reciprocal tariff effectively imposes a cost burden, placing our exporters at a 30-35 per cent competitive disadvantage compared to peers from countries with lesser reciprocal tariff, he said. "Many export orders have already been put on hold as buyers reassess sourcing decisions in light of higher landed costs. For a large number of MSME-led sectors, absorbing this sudden cost escalation is simply not viable. Margins are already thin, and this additional blow could force exporters to lose long-standing clients," Shah said. Kanpur-based Growmore International Ltd MD Yadvendra Singh Sachan said the exporters should look for new markets to maintain export growth. Exporters are hoping that early finalisation of the India-US bilateral trade agreement will help in dealing with the tariff challenges. The negotiations between India and the US are still going on for an interim trade deal, though there will be no compromise on the red lines with regard to duty concessions on agriculture items, dairy, and genetically modified (GM) products, sources said. The two countries are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). They are aiming to conclude the first phase of the pact by fall (October-November) this year.
