Re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha in 2019 and again in 2024 to the 18th Lok Sabha, he is currently a member of several key parliamentary committees including the Committees on Home Affairs, Estimates, and Business Advisory.However, his tenure was also marred by his alleged role in the 2G scam case. The CBI had alleged that Dayanidhi Maran, during the check period of June 2004 to December 2006, when he was the Union minister for communication and information technology, misused his office and installed a private telephone exchange at his residences in Chennai and used the facility for business transactions involving the Sun Network. It alleged that he had caused a loss of Rs 1.78 crore to the exchequer. More than 700 telecom lines were installed at their residences in Boat Club and Gopalapuram here, the agency charged. The reason behind Dayanidhi's entry in the cabinet has also been linked to Karunanidhi. It was seen that loved his nephew and Maran's father, Murasoli Maran, as much as his sons and that prompted the DMK leader to make Maran's younger son Dayanidhi a minister at the Centre in 2004 and 2009.Karunanidhi, who completed 50 years as DMK chief in July, was among the few regional political chieftains who had been key decision-makers in national politics. Having won elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly 13 times, Karunanidhi held the rare record of not having lost a poll since his first electoral victory in 1957. He was chief minister of the state five times.

Goa govt loses Rs 107cr as TCP gives free FAR to 321 commercial units
Panaji: Goa has lost Rs 107 crore as the town and country planning (TCP) department gave concessions to commercial establishments by not levying fees for additional floor area ratio (FAR), a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report has said. But the loss shoots up to over Rs 2,000 crore if it is calculated on the rate recommended by the finance department, the audit report said. The TCP department granted 10.7 lakh sqm additional FAR to 321 commercial establishments on their request without levying any fees, while the finance department had directed the TCP to charge Rs 1,000 per sqm on the additional FAR and height granted to the commercial establishments. 'Due to non-levy of any fees while granting additional FAR to the commercial establishments, there was a loss of Rs 107 crore to the state exchequer,' the report said. In the absence of any provision for levy of fees for the grant of additional FAR and height, the TCP department granted additional FAR to 321 commercial establishments free of cost. A senior audit officer said the TCP department, through a notification on Aug 9, 2023, categorised the FAR. Thereafter, the department amended and inserted a new clause (2) under 6.1.1 of the regulations, whereby it was stated that 'govt, on recommendation of the TCP board, shall grant additional height and FAR to the proposals on a case-to-case basis in consideration of the locational aspect, nature of development, use proposed, information available, and any such other criteria, if required. Such relaxation shall, however, not be relaxed for more than 20% permitted in the prevailing regulations.' But within 12 days, through another notification on Aug 21, 2023, the TCP department deleted the earlier clause: '…such relaxation shall, however, not be relaxed for more than 20% permitted in the prevailing regulations,' thereby not capping the ceiling limit. In 2015, the TCP department through a notification on July 2 had said four-star and five-star hotels may be granted 'an additional FAR of 20% on the recommendation of the committee and on the approval of govt', but on payment of Rs 20,000 per sqm. As the 321 commercial establishments were set up for profit motive, the TCP department should have levied the fees in line with those charged for four- and five-star hotels, the report said. The report also said the rate prescribed by the finance department needs to be reviewed as it was minimal and there was no slab for various categories (individuals, commercial establishments) for the grant of additional FAR and height. The TCP department through the Goa Land Development and Building Construction Regulation, 2010, regulates building construction in Goa. The regulation specifies technical parameters like FAR, height, amenities, water supply, sewerage, and fire safety. The technical parameters differ from zone to zone, as well as the size of the building and plot.

World Refugee Day: Stalin for supporting those affected by wars
On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday called for supporting those who have been severely affected by wars. In a social media post, Mr. Stalin said there were persons that were Stateless only because of wars. He recalled it was under his government that the 'refugee camps' housing the Sri Lankan Tamils were renamed as 'rehabilitation camps'. First of 3 evacuation flights under Operation Sindhu lands in Delhi with 290 Indian students from Iran
The first of three chartered chartered evacuation flight carrying Indian students from conflict-hit Iran landed safely in New Delhi late Friday night, as part of India's Operation Sindhu rescue effort. The flight, operated by Mahan Air, touched down at around 11.40 pm with 290 Indian nationals, most of them students from Jammu and Kashmir, onboard. Operation Sindhu was launched earlier this week to evacuate around 1,000 Indian citizens stranded in Iran amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel. The Indian Embassy in Tehran, in coordination with the Iranian government, facilitated the relocation of students from Tehran to safer cities such as Qom and Mashhad, from where they are being flown back to India. Two more evacuation flights are scheduled for Saturday, one from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, in the morning, and another from Mashhad in the evening. A senior Iranian diplomat indicated that additional flights may be organised over the weekend if necessary. Similarly, a separate batch of 110 Indian nationals who were moved to Armenia from Tehran reached Delhi on Thursday on a flight from Yerevan. Earlier, Mohammad Javad Hosseini, deputy chief of mission at the Iranian Embassy in Delhi, said during a media briefing, 'We consider Indians as our own people. Iran's airspace is closed, but because of this issue, we are making arrangements to open it for the safe passage of Indian nationals.' He had also confirmed that the Iranian foreign ministry is working closely with India's external affairs ministry to ensure the evacuation proceeds smoothly. None of the chartered flights are operating through Pakistani airspace due to prevailing geopolitical sensitivities. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association, which has been in close contact with many of the evacuees, issued a statement following the arrival of the first flight: 'Mahan Air evacuation flight from Mashhad, Iran, carrying 290 students, the majority of whom are from Kashmir, has landed safely in New Delhi just now. Heartfelt thanks to the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs, and all concerned authorities for their timely intervention and support. A great relief for families who had been anxiously awaiting their return.'
