Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo provides update on Jaylen Wells after scary fall vs. Hornets
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Jaylen Wells was taken to a hospital on Tuesday after a hard fall in a 124-100 win over the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center.
The incident occurred after Wells appeared to be undercut by Hornets guard KJ Simpson on a dunk attempt late in the second quarter. The game was delayed by about 20 minutes as the Grizzlies' training staff and EMTs tended to Wells, who was taken off the court on a stretcher.
After Wells left the arena in an ambulance, the game resumed, and Simpson was issued a Flagrant-2 foul, resulting in his ejection. Wells is awake, alert and moving his extremities.
"It puts everything into perspective," Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo said. "I mean, seeing that situation and seeing Jaylen there, (it was) a tough situation for everybody. He is an incredibly tough kid and had a great season. He is in all of our thoughts, and luckily, he is moving all of his extremities. Unfortunately, he has a broken wrist, but he is in our thoughts. He is a tough kid and will have a great recovery."
Wells is averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 35.2% shooting from 3-point range in 79 appearances with the Grizzlies. He is fourth in the rookie class in total scoring (823 points) and was the Western Conference Rookie of the Month in October and November.
The 39th pick had appeared in every game for the Grizzlies entering play on Tuesday. He became a full-time starter for former head coach Taylor Jenkins in their sixth game of the season and remained in that role after emerging as a key figure in the frontcourt.
"The only thing we can do is just pray for Jaylen Wells," Hornets forward Miles Bridges said. "He is a great guy. I've talked to him a couple of times. He seems like a great kid. It was very unfortunate what happened to him. I know KJ is not a dirty guy, so it was just an unfortunate situation. I heard things are going good for him and my prayers are up for him."
Wells was selected to the Rising Stars Game at NBA All-Star Weekend in February and was among the front-runners to win Rookie of the Year for much of the season. He will finish the season as the only second-round pick averaging at least 10 points per game.

You showed me what love truly meant. You turned the court into my sanctuary, a home where I could express myself freely. You made every early morning and late night we spent together worth every drop of sweat. You reminded me that I could always rely on you, that in every moment of doubt, you would show me what I'm capable of. Wings' Paige Bueckers just did something no NBA or WNBA player has done in 57 years

Wings' Paige Bueckers just did something no NBA or WNBA player has done in 57 years originally appeared on The Sporting News Amid swirling debate over her viability as the WNBA's Rookie of the Year, Paige Bueckers just did all she could to end the conversation for 2025. Even though her Dallas Wings were eliminated from playoff contention on Wednesday night, Bueckers nearly defeated the host Los Angeles Sparks by herself. The star point guard tied a WNBA rookie record by scoring 44 points -- the most by any player in The W this season -- as the Wings lost, 81-80, on a Kelsey Plum game-winner as time expired. MORE: Why the WNBA could fine Kelsey Plum despite Sparks star's heroics Bueckers though left no doubt as to her ascendancy into the league's elite, even before her first WNBA season is over and even though she is starring for a struggling team in Dallas. With her accomplishment on Wednesday, she just did something no WNBA or NBA player has done in nearly six decades. Back on March 29, Bueckers scored 40 points for the UConn Huskies in a win over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament; not even five months, she dropped 44 on the Sparks, a team that is only a half-game out of the WNBA's final playoff spot. This made Bueckers the first player since 1968 to score 40 or more points in an NCAA Tournament game as well as a NBA/WNBA game in the same calendar year. Just two other players have accomplished this feat, and both are basketball legends: Oscar Robertson in 1960, and Elvin Hayes in 1968. With her career night on Wednesday, Bueckers bumped up her scoring average to 19.7 points per game -- tops among rookies, and fifth among all WNBA players. Despite the lack of team success, Bueckers has enhanced her status as the Rookie of the Year favorite, and she is trending toward All-WNBA first team honors at season's end, too. Paige Bueckers scores 44 points, sets WNBA rookie record in Dallas Wings' loss

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Paige Bueckers put together not just one of the best shooting performances by a WNBA rookie, but one of the best performances ever by any player. The top pick in this year's draft scored 44 points in the Dallas Wings' 81-80 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night, the most points by a rookie in WNBA history and the most points in a game by any player this season. Bueckers sank 17 of 21 shots, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range and 6 of 6 at the free-throw line to become the first player in league history with 40-plus points on 80% shooting from the floor. She also had four rebounds and three assists. The WNBA first-year player record of 44 was set by Cynthia Cooper in the inaugural season of the WNBA (1997), when all players were 'first year.' The true rookie record was held by Candace Parker who scored 40 points in 2008. But it was a bittersweet performance for Bueckers, whose primary focus is on winning. 'I've always prided myself and the team on winning so that's obviously the main goal," she said. 'Honestly, I think I'm just most proud of this team, like, the way we fight. This team just means so much to me.' Bueckers, who scored Dallas' final 13 points, credited her teammates. 'Just my teammates getting me open. Screening for me, running some off-ball actions, trying to get myself open looks," she said. 'Just bringing the ball up the floor. (Luisa Geiselsoder) set amazing screens for me the entire night and then my teammates just looking for me, getting me the ball, getting me open.' Bueckers' teammate Arike Ogunbowale, who did not play on Wednesday night, posted 'ROY' (Rookie of the Year) on X. Bueckers is 60 points shy of Ogunbowale's franchise rookie scoring record of 630 points, set in 2019. 'Unreal. honored to play with you,' teammate Maddy Siegrist posted on X. Even the Sparks fans realized they were witnessing something special, cheering every Bueckers basket. 'It means a lot specifically because people have gotten to see the struggle and people have gotten to see the injuries, and the ups and downs,' said Bueckers, who struggled with injuries at UConn. Bueckers moved past Cooper for third-longest streak of consecutive double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history with 29. Las Vegas forward A'ja Wilson holds the record of 33. Bueckers had a chance to seal the game with the ball in her hands with 30 seconds left on the clock and a one-point lead. The rookie guard drew two defenders near the 3-point arc and unselfishly passed it to the corner for Aziaha James, whose 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim. Los Angeles got it to its veteran guard Kelsey Plum, who dribbled down the clock before driving into the lane past multiple defenders to bank in a runner at the buzzer. ___ AP WNBA:
