Singapore's war on vaping heats up — Puff and you could end up in prison

Man vaping (for illustration purposes only) SINGAPORE: Vaping in Singapore is about to face much harsher consequences, including jail time, as the government plans to address the issue as seriously as drug offences, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced in a national address on Sunday. 'So far, we've treated vaping like tobacco; at most, we impose a fine, but that's no longer enough,' Wong declared. 'We will treat this as a drug issue and impose much stiffer penalties.' According to a recent Bloomberg report, this change comes amid rising concerns about harmful substances in illegal vapes. Health officials report that around one-third of confiscated vapes contain etomidate, a powerful anaesthetic that can cause hallucinations and even permanent organ damage when misused. Medical specialists usually employ etomidate to bring drowsiness and get someone sedated, but it is now being misapplied in leisure vapes, resulting in fear within medical administration and law enforcement communities. Under the new policy, individuals caught selling vapes with such substances could face prison time. Users will be required to undergo mandatory rehabilitation. For repeat offenders, there will be a minimum jail sentence of one year. Singapore will also classify etomidate as a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Once this takes effect, users of etomidate-laced vapes will face the same legal consequences as those caught with hard drugs like cocaine or heroin. Notwithstanding the countrywide prohibition on vaping, prohibited merchandise continues to enter the Lion City. 'People are still smuggling vapes in and finding ways to get around our laws,' Wong said, promising that the government would strengthen enforcement. These measures mark a significant increase in Singapore's zero-tolerance stance on vaping and drug use. They signal that the city-state is ready to take further action to protect public health. 3 foreigners arrested and under investigation for illegal delivery rider work — Sun Xueling, Koh Poh Koon

SINGAPORE: In island-wide enforcement operations against illegal delivery riders conducted by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) over the past weeks, 375 workers were checked. Among them, three foreigners have been arrested and are under investigation for working illegally, said Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling and Senior Minister of State for Manpower Koh Poh Koon in a social media post on Monday (Aug 18). The post further explained that the enforcement operations had been carried out based on complaints and feedback on hotspots from the NDCA's (National Delivery Champions Association) regular engagement with delivery workers. It added that the locals who have aided these foreign workers in their illegal delivery work are under investigation by the government as well. 'Foreigners who work in Singapore without a valid work pass may be liable to a fine not exceeding S$20,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both. Local abettors who allow foreigners to use their accounts may face the same penalties,' the post reads, adding that the operations are crucial in deterring illegal platform work. The Platform Workers Trilateral Group, which is made up of the Ministry of Transport, the MOM, and the National Trades Union Congress, is currently developing its recommendations. 'We will continue to partner NDCA in conducting enforcement checks to safeguard the interests of our delivery workers,' Dr Koh added in his post. The issue of foreigners working as delivery riders is not a new one, with the MOM conducting investigations and arrests over the past few years. In March 2023, a video of a local food delivery rider berating a foreigner in the Orchard Road area went viral after it was published on Facebook. The local man accused the foreigner of illegally working as a Foodpanda food deliveryman, while the foreigner was in tears and begged to be let go. Local food delivery platforms are only allowed to hire locals or permanent residents to deliver food. MOM's website also states that it is illegal for foreigners to deliver food on platforms like GrabFood, Foodpanda, or Deliveroo. Together with them, three local individuals were accused of abetting these unlawful activities. The accused foreigners included three Malaysians and an Indian national. All four foreign nationals were charged under the Employment of Foreign Workers Act. Those who are convicted could face severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to two years, fines of up to S$20,000, or both. Furthermore, they may face a permanent ban on working within Singapore. /TISG Read also: Local draws flak after humiliating foreigner for illegally working as food delivery rider

30-year-old arrested for allegedly slashing man with Swiss Army knife at Geylang

SINGAPORE: A 30-year-old man was arrested on Monday (Aug 18) after allegedly using a Swiss Army knife to attack another person during a dispute at Geylang. The police in a news release on Tuesday said that they received a call for assistance on Monday at about 9.20am. A man had informed them that he had been slashed with a knife at 810 Geylang Road. The address points to City Plaza, a commercial property. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 30-year-old man purportedly got into a dispute with the male victim and allegedly used a Swiss Army knife to attack him. The suspect was arrested within six hours by officers from Bedok Police Division, said the police. The man will be charged in court on Wednesday with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons. The offence carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, caning or any combination of the punishments listed. The police said it has zero tolerance towards "such acts of violence in the community" and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
