EC suspends 4 officers for doctoring Bengal poll roll
NEW DELHI: Taking serious note of the "wrongful" additions being made to the West Bengal electoral roll by some of its field officers, Election Commission on Tuesday ordered immediate suspension of EROs and assistant EROs of Baruipur Purba assembly constituency (AC) and Moyna AC. It also directed that an FIR be filed against them for "criminal misconduct". In a letter sent to the West Bengal chief secretary on Tuesday, the poll panel said it has "taken serious note of the grave lapses and has decided the officers shall be placed under suspension for their failure in supervising the election related work... and suitable disciplinary proceedings initiated against them without any delay". The action against West Bengal civil service officers and EROs of Baruipur Purba AC and Moyna AC, Debottam Dutta Choudhury and Biplab Sarkar, respectively, and assistant EROs Tathagat Mondal and Sudipta Das, came after the state chief electoral officer (CEO) reported that they had been disposing of applications for inclusion in the electoral roll without proper verification or allowing a window for claims and objections. They also violated the policy of data security by sharing their login credentials for the electoral roll database with unauthorised persons. EC has ordered lodging of an FIR against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. Significantly, the CEO has reported to EC similar lapses by other West Bengal officials involved in preparation, revision and correction of the electoral roll. Action against these erring officers would follow, said an EC source. The rush on part of certain EROs and AEROs in West Bengal to arbitrarily add names to the state's roll comes even as EC prepares to order special intensive revision of its roll, on the lines of the exercise in Bihar. A source indicated that the hurry to add electors - many suspected to be Bangladeshi settlers - ahead of assembly polls next year may be an effort to ensure their names are on the roll before the enumeration phase of SIR gets underway. As per Section 32(1) of the R P Act, 1950, any ERO or assistant ERO guilty of any act or omission in breach of official duty, shall be punishable with a minimum jail term of three months, which can extend to two years with fine.

EC suspends 4 Bengal officers, asks for FIRs
1 2 Kolkata: The Election Commission on Tuesday suspended four Bengal govt officers, including two electoral registration officers (EROs) and two assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs), asking chief secretary Manoj Pant to lodge FIRs against them and start disciplinary proceedings. Prima facie, the officers had erred in checking entry of bogus voters in voters' list, the commission said in its letter to Pant. Among the four are two WBCS (exe) officers of 2012 batch, who would be placed under suspension immediately "for grave lapses committed by them" and "for failure in supervising poll-related work". Pant has been instructed to start disciplinary proceedings against them without delay. The four include the EROs and AEROs of Baruipur East in South 24 Parganas and Moyna in East Midnapore, and FIRs will be lodged "for their actions, which potentially amount to criminal misconduct". The EC has also requested the lodging of an FIR against a data entry operator and instructed the Bengal chief secretary to comply with the directives and send an action taken report at the earliest. The commission has sought details of agencies hired for providing data entry operators. The commission's letter further stated that under Representation of the People Act, 1950, CEO, DEO, ERO, AERO and other officers or staff employed in connection with the preparation, revision and correction of electoral rolls for conduct of polls shall be deemed to be on deputation to the EC. The action against the erring officials was being taken under section 32 of the act, the letter added. A senior official said the four officials will have a black spot on their careers unless exonerated by the EC. He mentioned that earlier two DMs were removed by the EC, and it had requested departmental proceedings against them, but state govt did not start the proceedings. The EC is likely to take action against more poll officials for their negligence or gross violation of duty, the official added.

Yunus vows constitutional status for 2024 uprising in Bangladesh's ‘July Declaration'
The student-people uprising of 2024 that overthrew the Sheikh Hasina-led government of Bangladesh will get 'constitutional recognition', said the July Declaration that was launched by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) in Dhaka. The Declaration, launched on the anniversary of the fall of Hasina government, blamed the Awami League for creating a one-party state in Bangladesh after 1971 and said the party was 'loyal to external forces'. In a statement sent to The Hindu, the Awami League hit back at the interim government and said the Declaration did not offer anything to the 'protesting job seekers' of Bangladesh. 'Therefore, the people of Bangladesh express their desire that the student-people uprising of 2024 will get proper state and constitutional recognition and that the July declaration will feature in the schedule of the reformed constitution as framed by the government formed through the next national election,' said the Declaration that was launched in an event where representatives of the newly launched National Citizens Party (NCP), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Jamaat-E-Islami (JEI) stood beside Mr. Yunus. The document started by paying tribute to the Liberation War of 1971 while avoiding any mention of founding figure of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and blamed his Awami League for creating a one party state named BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League), that Sheikh Mujib had launched in 1975 before his assassination. The Declaration made no mention of the Mukti Bahini which played a leading role in launching guerrilla war against Pakistani forces in 1971. The July Declaration, presented by Mr. Yunus at a public event held on parliament premises of Bangladesh, made several references to the deposed Ms. Hasina, terming her tenure as marked with corruption and decay, and said, '…during the rule of Sheikh Hasina, under her very leadership, an extreme force that was anti-people, autocratic and against human rights turned Bangladesh into a fascist, mafia and failed state and thereby tarnished Bangladesh's international image.' The document said the democratic change of government was disrupted because of 'domestic and external intrigues' and added, '..the Awami League government, loyal to external forces, applied brutal force to suppress people's rightful protests against foreign tutelage, exploitation and domination.' In a televised speech later in the evening, Mr. Yunus described the July Declaration as a 'historic document' and said he will write to the Election Commission of Bangladesh to organise election in February 2026, ahead of next Ramzan. 'All of you should pray so that we can progress towards creating a 'New Bangladesh' by conducting a smooth election,' Mr. Yunus said. He also paid tribute to the victims who died in the recent crash of an air force jet in Dhaka's Milestone College and expressed gratitude to Singapore, India and China for helping the survivors of that incident. In a statement shared with The Hindu, the Awami League described the July Declaration as a 'heinous attempt to erase the history and values' of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. 'It has not offered anything to the protesting job seekers, who were misled into a regime change coup. Bangladesh had one declaration only, and that was our declaration of independence. Nothing will replace that,' said the Awami League in the statement sent to The Hindu.
