Gautam Gambhir's future as India head coach questioned: ‘3 series defeats in a row would be a problem for him'
India have been lauded at many points for their performances during the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy but the fact remains that a defeat in the final Test at the Oval would make it a third consecutive Test series loss for India. India had lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia 3-1 earlier this year, a result that confirmed their first-ever failure to make it to the World Test Championship final, before which they shockingly lost 3-0 at home to New Zealand. All of these defeats have come with Gautam Gambhir as head coach and former England captain Mike Atherton feels that this would put the former India opener under pressure, even though he has also led India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy. 'Well, they've lost two series in a row. They lost at home to New Zealand 3-0, and they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1. If they lose this series, then yeah, he's under pressure as a coach,' said Atherton on Sky Sports. 'India, with all their resources, their population strength, they're not a team that people are patient with. They're expected to win every time they walk onto the park. So three Test series defeats in a row would be a problem for him,' Atherton added. India captain Shubman Gill was asked on the eve of the fifth Test if Gambhir's altercation with the pitch curator at the Oval was a reflection of the fact that the Indian head coach was feeling the pressure. Gill, however, brushed away that notion, stating that it was merely a response to the Indian team management not being allowed to take a look at the pitch from close proximity. India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had also said earlier that Gambhir is not feeling any kind of pressure. 'He is not under pressure. The series has been competitive, and both teams have played well. The series opener and the third Test could have gone either way. All the matches went to the fifth day, and it has been a brilliant series. I haven't seen Gautam Gambhir under pressure from his playing days till now,' he said.

Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20: ‘It's a really great mood in the camp,' reveals Devdutt Padikkal ahead of Season 4
Bengaluru: The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 auction 2025 saw Indian left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal acquired by the Hubli Tigers, emerging as the most expensive player with a bid of Rs 13.20 lakh. The star acquisition underscores the Tigers' ambitious campaign for the upcoming season, scheduled from August 11 to 27 at Bengaluru's iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Padikkal was a vital performer last season, representing the Gulbarga Mystics, where he amassed 253 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 140.55, including two fifties and helping his side reach the semifinals. Hubli Tigers, last season's runners-up, have bolstered their squad by also acquiring explosive batters like Abhinav Manohar, aiming to clinch the title this year. 'Obviously, I am really excited for the season. Hubli Tigers is a very nice franchise to be a part of. I have heard a lot about them, and I am obviously happy with how the squad is. We are pretty well-balanced, so I am looking forward to the season. It's a really great mood in the camp. Especially, in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20, you play with a lot of these guys throughout the year anyway. So, it's good to meet a few of them, some of whom I have played with before as well. It's been really great so far, and I am really happy with the squad,' Paddikal revealed. The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 Season 4 auction witnessed all six teams, defending champions Mysore Warriors, Bengaluru Blasters, Hubli Tigers, Gulbarga Mystics, Shivamogga Lions, and Mangaluru Dragons, assemble formidable and well-balanced squads on paper. The Hubli Tigers made big moves in the auction, securing the experienced Mohammed Taha and Abhinav Manohar to build a solid core, and added youngsters like Prakhar Chaturvedi, Sankalp SS, Samarth Nagaraj, Rakshith S, Nithin Shanthaveri Nagaraja, and Yash Raj Punja to form a well-rounded team. 'The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 has always been a great platform for everyone in Karnataka to showcase their talents. This year will be no different, to be honest. I am sure there will be a few very exciting players that will come up from this tournament, and I am eager to see how they perform,' he added. Padikkal is among India's brightest young cricketers, making his international debut for India in July 2021 and played his maiden Test match in Australia, scoring a half-century in his debut innings. He will now make his debut for the Hubli Tigers in their first match of the season against Shivamogga Lions, on August 12. 'Every game is important, and I will continue to look to improve. At the end of the day, we want to win the tournament, and that's pretty much the same goal,' he signed off.

Haryana, Pune and Tamil favourites to win PKL 2025: Rishank Devadiga
The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) 2025 is set to commence in less than a month's time from August 29, and as the season approaches, coaches and experts have said this could be the most competitive edition yet. With a fresh schedule, revamped squads and exciting rivalries on the cards, the buzz around PKL 2025 is stronger than ever. At the pre-season media day on JioStar, former India international Rishank Devadiga said the tournament's opening matches, including a southern derby, would set the tone for a high-octane season. He named three teams as early title contenders—Haryana Steelers, Puneri Paltan and Tamil Thalaivas—citing their balance, consistency and strategic team-building. Coaches BC Ramesh, Manpreet Singh and Ajay Thakur also spoke about their squads, tactical focus and the importance of unity and youth development this season. PKL's growth fuels player ambitions According to Devadiga, PKL has transformed the landscape of Indian kabaddi by offering players both visibility and financial stability. He noted that coaches like BC Ramesh and Manpreet Singh are placing greater faith in younger talent, which has made the game faster and more intense. He highlighted the rise of players like Devank Dalal, who earned praise last season and will be one to watch again. Devadiga emphasised that the platform is now not just a career path but a life-changing opportunity for many players from modest backgrounds. Top teams to watch: Haryana, Pune and Tamil While predicting a tightly contested league, Devadiga singled out Haryana Steelers for their defensive consistency, Puneri Paltan for their well-rounded squad and Tamil Thalaivas for looking tactically solid ahead of the opener. He said last season was marked by defensive brilliance—especially from players like Mohammadreza Shadloui—but this year, he expects raiders like Devank and Ashu Malik to take centre stage. 'Raiders are ready to take back the spotlight,' he said confidently. BC Ramesh eyes redemption with Bengaluru Bulls Returning to Bengaluru Bulls as head coach, BC Ramesh said this move was deeply personal. After guiding Puneri Paltan to the finals in Seasons IX and X, he was eager to return to his hometown team. He added that defence would be the foundation of their strategy and said players across key positions are already showing strong signs. Young names like Akash Shinde, Aashish Malik and Ganesh were picked through the NYP trials, and Ramesh is banking on their energy to bolster the squad. Balanced Steelers bank on continuity Haryana Steelers head coach Manpreet Singh said the team had been carefully assembled during the auction with balance in mind. With experienced defenders like Jaideep and Rahul and the addition of raider Naveen, he believes the side has all the ingredients for another strong run. He noted the impact of young defenders as well and aims to replicate last season's dominant form, where they won 18 out of 22 matches. Ajay Thakur focused on unity at Pune Newly appointed Puneri Paltan coach Ajay Thakur acknowledged the challenge of handling a team filled with individually skilled players. His aim, he said, is to build unity and mutual trust within the squad. Thakur plans to take it one step at a time—first making it to the top six before eyeing the playoffs and final. According to him, consistent performance and communication on the mat will define Pune's campaign.
