The celebrations passed off peacefully, except for a minor incident in Meghalaya's capital Shillong, where motorcycle-borne miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the Pasteur Beat House in the early hours. The attack caused no significant damage.
In his Independence Day address, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma warned that power would slip into the hands of unknown people if the Assamese remained silent. 'We, the Assamese, cannot stay silent or else, we will lose our race, land and foundation in 10 years; 80% of our ministers will be unknown people within 15 years, and the tricolour on the I-Day will be hoisted by an unknown chief minister after two decades,' Sarma said.
He assured that ongoing eviction drives would continue until every inch of government land was reclaimed. 'The Assamese will not rest till land is cleared of encroachment,' he added. Sarma also criticised previous governments, stating, 'The bureaucracy under previous governments has to answer as to how such a mind-boggling scale of encroachment by infiltrators was allowed.'

HC relief for CHRI, sets aside I-T dept notice to cancel NGO designation
In a relief to the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), the Delhi High Court on Tuesday set aside a notice issued under the Income Tax Act that sought to cancel the NGO's registration as a charitable institution. The bench of Justices V Kameswar Rao and Vinod Kumar set aside the notice and allowed CHRI's petition. The I-T Department had cited the NGO's earlier FCRA cancellation by the Centre while issuing the notice. FCRA cancellation implies the organisation can't accept foreign contributions. Notably, the NGO's Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) registration was cancelled twice by the Centre through the MHA. It was first cancelled in April 2022, which was challenged by the NGO before the HC. The court had quashed the Centre's order on the ground it was not reasoned, directing it to reconsider the case. Following reconsideration, the Centre cancelled the FCRA registration a second time through an order in September 2024. This is now under challenge before the HC, and is due to be heard next on September 14. Pending the challenge, the I-T Department on July 29 issued notice to CHRI under Section 12AB(4)(a), which deals with revocation of IT Act registration certificate granted in case of specified violations — that is, if the institution violates any other law. The Commissioner of I-T (Exemption), Delhi, issued a hearing notice to CHRI under Section 12AB(4)(a) proposing cancellation of registration under Section 12A of the IT Act — its designation as a charitable organisation — on the ground that FCRA registration cancellation is a 'specified violation' under Section 12AB(4)(f). Senior advocate Arvind Datar, appearing with advocate Kabir Dixit, in their challenge to the I-T department's notice, highlighted that such a notice proposing cancellation of their IT Act registration at this stage is premature and legally untenable.

Sikkim University Student Sparks Row With 'Nepali' Remark, Taken Into Custody
A major controversy has erupted on the campus of Sikkim University in Gangtok over alleged derogatory remarks against the Nepali community and language by a student from Uttar Pradesh in a department WhatsApp group. The student apologised after an uproar and police complaints, but he has been taken into custody. According to sources, on August 14, Sikkim University student Raj Shekar Sarkar allegedly called Nepali a "foreign country's language" and said those who wanted to use it should "go to Nepal". Shekhar, who is from Varanasi, made the remark in the official WhatsApp group of the university's Commerce department, which has students and faculty as members. According to sources, Shekhar had also asked for classes to be held on Independence Day. The remarks triggered outrage and student groups demanded his expulsion. Following complaints, the Sikkim Police has placed Sarkar in preventive custody under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 196(1) (Promoting enmity between groups) and 353(2) (promoting enmity through falsehood). "Our demand is very clear - the student should be permanently terminated from the university. He has hurt the sentiments of Nepali-speaking people across the state, the country, and even globally. Divisive thoughts like these cannot be tolerated in an academic space," said Anup Regmi, President of Sikkim University Students' Association (SUSA). University Registrar In-Charge Laxuman Sharma said a committee has been set up to investigate the allegations and they are awaiting a report. "Once we get the report, we will take a decision. We will also sensitise all students. This incident is unfortunate," he said.
