
Report: 99% of Malaysians likely to adopt emerging digital payment methods in the next year
According to new research by Mastercard which surveyed consumers across the globe on payment preferences, almost two-thirds (63%) of Malaysian consumers prefer using new and innovative methods such as Tap & Go mobile payments, biometric payments, QR codes and mobile wallets over traditional methods like cash or manual card entry, reflecting a widespread appetite for innovation.
This compares to just 25% in North America, 24% in Europe and 53% in Asia Pacific overall, underlining Malaysian consumers' receptivity to adopting emerging digital payment solutions.
Embracing payment innovation
Digital payment adoption is set to surge in Malaysia, with 99% of consumers likely to use emerging digital payment methods in the next year.
They also want a choice in payment types, with 93% likely to use five or more payment methods in the next 12 months.
While cash is still Malaysia's most used payment method—70% of consumers used it in the last year, narrowly edging out QR code payments (64%)—usage of digital payment methods is set to rise in the next year.
In Malaysia, 86% of consumers are likely to use instant payment services while 85% and 83% expect to use QR code payments and digital wallets respectively in the year ahead.
This preference for innovation applies to other emerging technologies as well, with 89% of Malaysian consumers (compared to 86% across APAC more broadly) saying they are keen to use AI to manage their finances, particularly for fraud detection, payment automation, product personalisation and predicting financial outcomes.
There is also rising demand for payment options to maximise the value of their wallets with 91% of Malaysians agreeing that their current financial status plays a substantial role in their choice of payment methods, among the highest globally.

As payment options grow, consumers are seeking hyper-convenient ways to manage money that fit seamlessly with their digital usage habits.
They want flexibility to customise how they pay, tapping into digitally native methods like peer-to-peer or peer-to-merchant payments, QR codes, wearables, and social commerce.
In fact, 92% of Malaysians agree that companies should make it as simple as possible for consumers to buy from them, with 86% agreeing that they should be able to buy anything at any time, regardless of the type of payment methods.
Super apps are the new baseline: In Malaysia, 75% of consumers use or want all-in-one apps to manage payments, shopping, and more. As these platforms become mainstream, payment tools must meet consumers where they already are, not the other way around.
Social shopping is shaping commerce, especially for younger consumers: In Malaysia, 54% of Gen Z consumers and 46% of Millennial consumers prefer buying through social apps as compared to a merchant's website.
In fact, 72% of Malaysians say influencers now shape their buying decisions—eight percentage points higher than the region's average.
Embedding seamless payments into digital leisure spaces like social media apps is key to enabling this shift from browsing to buying.
Trust and security are top of mind: While 72% of Malaysian consumers see biometric payments as more secure than traditional methods, 84% are concerned about who has access to their data, 6 percentage points higher than the Asia Pacific average.
Mastercard Malaysia & Brunei country manager Beena Pothen noted that the findings reaffirmed that the digital evolution in payments has firmly taken centre stage in Malaysia.
'With digital-first and mobile-first lifestyles shaping consumer behaviour, innovation and security in payments will be key to sustaining this momentum,' she stressed.

INDUSTRY experts gave tips at the recent Star Outstanding Business Awards 2025 LAB participants on how to navigate the challenging times wrought with geopolitical uncertainties. Then in the second session, the panel of experts explored different methods that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) seek financing outside of the conventional practice of approaching normal financial institutions. The speakers discussed the different scenarios that businesses have to confront, from the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States to the expanded Sales and Service Tax from the government as well as instances of supply chain disruptions due to the civil unrest in the Middle East. Ng advised businesses to understand themselves and to draw back until the time is right to scale back up. Noor Hayati both touched on the importance of diversification, either in business or which country to trade with. Cheah urged SMEs that it is time to start looking into environment, social and governance matters as it has a profound impact. The second session, which was moderated by Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia treasurer Datuk Koong Lin Loong, gave SMEs enlightening information on 'Raising Funds and Accessing Capital for Business Growth'. Speakers in this session included RHB Bank Berhad SME banking, SME engagement head Sim Ee Chiew, Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia chief business officer Sean Tan, PEOPLElogy Berhad founder Allen Lee and Hernan Corporation founder and group CEO Datuk Anna Teo. The panel gave a lively session as Teo declared she rarely approached banks for financing. She asked businesses to be more flexible and explore other possibilities. While banks would be the first step for budding businesses, she said entrepreneurs should network and ask about other alternatives, such as private equities. Tan explained that CGC's job is to transfer the credit risks from a bank to CGC. In the event a business fails, and the SME is unable to pay, CGC will provide the necessary relief. Ng shared his experience of raising funds via the initial public offering route, which he said was 'more challenging because (Bursa Malaysia) wants the public to trust you (hence the need for) transparency.' Sim said that banks do much more than just provide loans, they help enhance cash flow and operation efficiency in order to eliminate idle cash, as well as digitalisation services. Malaysia's regulator launches greenhouse gas emission calculator for SMEs
Xinhua 22 Jul 2025, 21:46 GMT+10 KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM), an affiliate of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), on Tuesday launched the Simplified ESG Disclosure Guide Greenhouse Gas Emission Calculator for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The CMM said in a statement that the user-friendly tool is designed to help Malaysian companies measure and report their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions based on the globally recognized Greenhouse Gas Protocol. To ensure consistency and credibility, the tool utilizes a methodology which follows widely accepted international standards that are also used by the Malaysian government in the Biennial National Communications to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). "The calculator simplifies a complex process, making emissions reporting accessible even to first-time users. Beyond reporting, it also enables companies to pinpoint key emission sources across operations, allowing them to make informed decisions and move towards meaningful climate action," said Mohammad Faiz Azmi, executive chairman of the SC and chairman of CMM. He added that the calculator further complements efforts by the SC to promote consistent and credible sustainability disclosures and supports the adoption of the National Sustainability Reporting Framework by Malaysian companies.

Analysts foresee policy shifts to fuel EV market competition in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Analysts have foreseen intensified competition for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia amid policy changes in the country. Research house BIMB said in a note on Monday that Malaysia's EV market is approaching a key policy turning point, with the government expected to end completely built-up (CBU) import tax exemptions and the Approved Permit (AP) regime by year-end. "This decision will likely shape the direction of the market -- either accelerating liberalization and inviting more aggressive price competition or maintaining a controlled environment that protects local players," said the research house. BIMB noted that the policy outcome will not only affect the pace of EV adoption and pricing dynamics, but also influence the competitiveness of local original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), ongoing completely knocked down (CKD) investment strategies, and the overall outlook for the automotive sector. Hong Leong Investment Bank also highlighted in its note on Tuesday that it expects continued stiff competition for the 100,000 ringgit (23,624 U.S. dollars) to 200,000 ringgit price segment in Malaysia due to normalizing of consumer demand and aggressive new launches and sales campaigns. However, it foresees the EV segment in Malaysia continuing to gain momentum with a 4.6 percent market share in the first half. It also noted that the new customized incentive mechanism (NCM) is expected to materialize by the fourth quarter of 2025, in place of the current industrial linkage program (ILP). The NCM is being structured to encourage OEMs to expand localization activities at the local vendor level and thereby increase the ability of local suppliers to produce higher-value components. Further incentives are also being considered for EVs, in order to promote the development of this new technology in the local automotive ecosystem. Meanwhile, Kenanga Research in a note on Tuesday expects more favorable incentives from the Malaysian government, which has set a national target for EVs and hybrid vehicles of 20 percent of total industry volume (TIV) by 2030 and 38 percent by 2040. Kenanga opined that Malaysia's new vehicle sales will be supported by new battery EVs (BEVs) that enjoy sales and service tax (SST) exemptions and other EV facilities incentives up until 2025 for CBUs and 2027 for CKDs. While the exemption of import and excise duties for CBU EVs has partly driven EV adoption, RHB Investment Bank opined that it is unlikely to get extended beyond end-2025, as it thinks the government's focus will now be on attracting OEMs to manufacture and assemble their EVs locally, as CKD EVs will continue to enjoy a tax holiday until end-2027. According to the research house, an extension of the tax holiday for CBU EVs would be counter-productive for incentivizing OEMs to establish local production facilities. "While we expect EV numbers to continue picking up in the coming months, growth in market share is likely to remain moderate due to structural headwinds -- high pricing and limited availability of charging infrastructure. As such, EVs are unlikely to influence overall TIV in the near term," it said in its note on Tuesday.
