Why England hero Jess Carter decided to miss Euro 2025 trophy parade
Around 65,000 fans and members of the Royal Family attended England's joyous trophy parade in London on Tuesday afternoon.
The England squad, which retained their Euros title with a penalty shootout win over Spain, was taken along The Mall in an open-top bus.
The players then gathered on a stage in front of the Queen Victoria Memorial outside Buckingham Palace where the merriment continued.
All but one of England's Euro-winning squad attended the parade, with Carter a surprise absentee following her crucial performance in the final.
There had been scrutiny over Carter's place in the team earlier in the tournament but she justified Sarina Wiegman's faith with an impressive performance against World Cup holders Spain.
As well as missing the trophy parade in central London, Carter also missed the England squad's visit to Downing Street on Monday evening.
That is because the 27-year-old immediately flew back to the United States after the Euro 2025 final to prepare for another game.
Carter's club side Gotham FC return to NWSL action on Saturday with an away match against Chicago Stars.
According to talkSPORT, it was Carter's decision not her club's to return straightaway, even though it meant missing two days of celebration back in the UK.

That appears to be the case as fellow England players Esme Morgan and Anna Moorhouse, who also play club football in America, attended the parade.
Carter's decision to miss the celebrations divided England fans, with many saying it was a shame she was not involved after helping the Lionesses become two-time European champions.
'Jess Carter deserves to be there,' one fan posted on X with a crying emoji, while another said: 'I so wish Jess Carter was there to feel the love too.'
Others said it was an example of 'elite mentality' from Carter, though there were also complaints about the congested football calendar which gives little time for breaks, even after major tournaments.
Carter revealed she would be 'taking a step back from social media' during Euro 2025 due to the racist abuse she was suffering.
'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,' said Carter, who is yet to post following England's Euros victory. https://www.instagram.com/p/DMVJrSzN9Rn/?hl=en
'While I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result, I don't agree, or think, it's OK to target someone's appearance or race.
'As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with.'
That abuse – plus the prospect of playing in a Euros final – left Carter 'scared' to even play in Sunday's showpiece event in Basel.
'I was super scared to play today for the first time in my life,' Carter told ITV after the match.
'But when I woke up and I saw my team, and the support I had and the belief I had from my teammates, my family and my manager, I knew I could just come out and give it my all. That's all you can do.
'To have that faith from Sarina to put me back in the squad, and that she believed I could help this team win a trophy, was amazing. It gave me a lot of confidence going into this game.' More Trending
Speaking at England's trophy parade, Lionesses captain Leah Williamson said: 'I've been crying all the way down The Mall!
'This is unbelievable, probably one of the best things we've been a part of. We're making history every single step. Stay with us, this story is not done yet.'
Chloe Kelly, who scored England's winning penalty against Spain, added: 'This is incredible. Pressure, what pressure?
'It is so good to stand side by side with every single one of these girls throughout the whole tournament, and the staff that you don't see behind the scenes.'

Pogacar to skip Vuelta a Espana after 'demanding' Tour de France
July 30 (Reuters) - Tadej Pogacar will skip the Vuelta a Espana in order to rest after winning a fourth Tour de France title, the Slovenian said. The 26-year-old UAE Team Emirates XRG rider sealed his Tour de France title on Sunday after three weeks of dominance, but said fatigue had crept in during the final days. His previous Tour de France titles came in 2020, 2021 and 2024. Pogacar will return to action at the one-day races in Quebec and Montreal in September before shifting focus to the UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda, where he is the defending champion. "After such a demanding Tour, we decided it was best to take a break," Pogacar said in a statement late on Tuesday. "The Vuelta is of course a race I would dearly love to return to. I have fantastic memories there from 2019, but now the body is telling me to rest. "I'm excited to go back to Canada; the races are tough but beautiful, and they fit my style well. I'll be aiming to be back racing well again for that part of the season and for the World Championships especially." Pogacar is yet to win the Vuelta a Espana, having captured three stage wins and securing the young rider classification in his only appearance in 2019. The Vuelta runs from August 23 to September 14.

Reports: Whitecaps closing in on deal with Thomas Muller
July 30 - The Vancouver Whitecaps are finalizing a deal to sign former Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller, according to multiple reports. Vancouver's next step in closing the deal, which would be its highest-profile signing in team history, is to acquire Muller's discovery rights. Discovery rights allow MLS clubs to negotiate with players outside of the league, and prohibit other clubs from negotiating with the player. FC Cincinnati currently hold Muller's discovery rights, but the World Cup winner reportedly declined an offer to join FC Cincinnati in April. Per The Athletic and ESPN, Vancouver is close to finalizing a trade for the discovery rights, in exchange for $400,000 in General Allocation Money. Muller, 35, played 17 seasons for Bayern Munich of the Bundesliga. He tallied 250 goals, 756 appearances and 33 trophies -- including a pair of Champions League titles and 13 league titles -- during one of the most illustrious tenures in club history. The attacking midfielder and forward also notched 45 goals and 131 caps for Germany. The Whitecaps (13-5-6, 45 points) are second in the MLS Western Conference right now, sitting one point behind San Diego FC for the conference lead. --Field Level Media

July 30 - Las Vegas is set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, according to an ESPN report on Tuesday. Sources told the outlet that the date of the draw would be Friday, Dec. 5 and that Las Vegas was selected over cities in Canada and Mexico. FIFA officials have not confirmed the date or site. For the first time, the competition will take place in three countries and will feature 48 nations, as opposed to the traditional 32. Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium was rejected as a host venue. The U.S. sites are divided into three regions. New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Atlanta are a part of the Eastern region, Kansas City, Dallas and Houston comprise a part of the Central Region, while Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area make up three of the four cities in the Western Region. The draw will reveal the dozen groups with four nations per group. Mexico (Group A), Canada (Group B) and the United States (Group D) have already been selected for their groups. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the final match on July 19, 2026. Las Vegas hosted the draw in 1994, the last time the World Cup was held in the United States.
