This week a reader is having a problem with Microsoft OneDrive.
'I had been keeping all of my files off of OneDrive successfully for several years. Somehow in the last year, all of my files, documents, photos, etc., have been moved to the OneDrive cloud storage. I want everything back and nothing left on the cloud. Each time I have followed Microsoft's instructions on how to do this, it doesn't work. It places everything back on my hard drive as 'copies' of everything in the cloud, leaving all of the originals on the cloud. I am at my wits' end! I want to turn OneDrive off permanently once I finally get everything back.'
Not everyone is comfortable with their files being stored in the cloud.
You can see what local folders are set to sync to the OneDrive cloud by clicking on the OneDrive cloud icon in your system tray and choosing the gear icon on the top right and choosing Settings.
At the top of the Settings page is a button to Manage Backup, which is where you can pick which of your local folders are automatically synced to OneDrive. You can check here to see if your Desktop, Documents or Downloads folders (or others) are set to sync. Make your own choices here.
You can also pause syncing all your files under the gear icon.
The easiest way to copy your files from OneDrive back to your computer is to use a browser to log into your OneDrive and download the files.
The OneDrive web interface will show you exactly what files are in the cloud. You can select the files and/or folders and click the download button. I recommend you save them to an external hard drive or flash drive.
Once you have your files safely onto whatever drive you choose, you can unlink your PC from OneDrive. Under the gear icon, select the Account setting and click 'Unlink this PC.'
Finally, you can uninstall OneDrive under your computer's Settings by selecting Apps or Apps & Features, then choosing Microsoft OneDrive from the application list, clicking on it and selecting Uninstall. – Tribune News Service

Microsoft server hack likely single actor, thousands of firms now vulnerable, researchers say

FILE PHOTO: A man looks at his phone as he passes by the Microsoft stand at the Mobile World Congress trade show, in Barcelona, Spain, March 3, 2025. REUTERS/ Bruna Casas/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -A global attack on Microsoft server software used by thousands of government agencies and businesses to share documents within organisations is likely the work of a single actor, a cybersecurity researcher said on Monday. Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about "active attacks" on SharePoint servers used within organisations. It said that SharePoint Online in Microsoft 365, which is in the cloud, was not hit by the exploit, also known as a "zero day" because it was previously unknown to cybersecurity researchers. "Based on the consistency of the tradecraft seen across observed attacks, the campaign launched on Friday appears to be a single actor. However, it's possible that this will quickly change," Rafe Pilling, Director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity firm. That tradecraft included the sending of the same digital payload to multiple targets, Pilling added. Microsoft said it had "provided security updates and encourages customers to install them," a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. It was not clear who was behind the ongoing hack. The FBI said on Sunday it was aware of the attacks and was working closely with its federal and private-sector partners, but offered no other details. Britain's National Cyber Security Centre did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Washington Post said unidentified actors in the past few days had exploited a flaw to launch an attack that targeted U.S. and international agencies and businesses. According to data from Shodan, a search engine that helps to identify internet-linked equipment, over 8,000 servers online could theoretically have already been compromised by hackers. Those servers include major industrial firms, banks, auditors, healthcare companies, and several U.S. state-level and international government entities. "The SharePoint incident appears to have created a broad level of compromise across a range of servers globally," said Daniel Card of British cybersecurity consultancy, PwnDefend. "Taking an assumed breach approach is wise, and it's also important to understand that just applying the patch isn't all that is required here." Microsoft to help France showcase Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral in digital replica

FILE PHOTO: A woman takes a picture with her smartphone, as people queue to visit the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral soon after it reopened after its restoration in Paris, France, December 27, 2024. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo (Reuters) -Microsoft is teaming up with the French government to create a digital replica of Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral, France's most visited monument, the U.S. tech company's president, Brad Smith, said on Monday. The 862-year-old Gothic masterpiece was reopened last December after a five-year restoration following a devastating fire in 2019. A digital replica will serve as a record of the building's architectural details, Microsoft said. It will also provide a virtual experience for visitors and those unable to visit. The cathedral became a symbol of Paris and France after Victor Hugo used it as a setting for his 1831 novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". Quasimodo, the main character, has been portrayed in Hollywood movies, an animated Disney adaptation and in musicals. Last year, Microsoft worked with Iconem, a French company that specialises in digitalisation of heritage sites, on a digital replica of St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. "One of the things we learned from the work at St Peter's is how a digital twin can help support the ongoing maintenance of a building. Because you capture a digital record of every centimetre and what is there and what it's supposed to look like," Smith told Reuters. "The ability to create a digital twin right now I think will provide an enormously valuable digital record that I believe people are going to be using 100 years from now," he said. Since 2019, Microsoft has digitally preserved heritage sites and events including Ancient Olympia in Greece, Mont Saint-Michel in France and the 80th Anniversary of the Allied Beach Landings in Normandy. Malaysia aims for regional AI leadership with 2026-2030 action plan

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government is crafting the National Artificial Intelligence Action Plan 2026–2030 to establish the country as a regional AI leader and improve its global AI rankings. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo revealed that Malaysia currently ranks 26th in the Stanford HAI AI Index (2023) and 24th in the Oxford Insights Government AI Readiness Index 2024. 'On local talent development, the government has already rolled out several large-scale initiatives to boost the nation's workforce readiness for AI adoption,' Gobind said in Parliament. He highlighted the 'AI for My Future' programme, a collaboration with Microsoft, designed to train nearly 800,000 Malaysians through interactive modules. The minister was responding to Batu Gajah MP Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu's query on Malaysia's AI preparedness, covering technology transfer, talent development, and governance integration. Gobind also noted MDEC's initiatives, including MyDigital Maker and Cikgu Juara Digital, which focus on robotics and data analytics training for students and educators. Additionally, the AI@Work programme with Google aims to train 445,000 civil servants using AI tools like Gemini and Notebook LLM to improve public service efficiency. The government is also reviewing legal frameworks to draft dedicated AI legislation, ensuring governance aligns with Malaysia's ambition to become a regional AI hub. - Bernama
