Cybersecurity firm warns Pakistanis of risks associated with fake QR codes
According to a report of the company released on Thursday, in today's digital world, QR codes are placed on almost everything - from restaurant menus to museum exhibits, and even utility bills and parking lots. People use them to open websites, download apps, collect loyalty program points, make payments and transfer money, and even for charity donations. The accessible and practical technology is convenient for many, including cybercriminals, who have already rolled out a variety of QR-based schemes.
Kaspersky experts have identified the top security risks when scanning QR codes. QR codes can direct users to fraudulent websites designed to steal personal or financial information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. Attackers can impersonate legitimate sites, such as banks or streaming services, and trick users into entering their credentials. Some QR codes can trigger the download of malicious applications that compromise the security of the user's device, especially if it is not protected against unauthorized installation.
During special events or sales periods like holiday sales, a fake QR code can redirect users to make payments to fraudulent accounts. A QR code can also automatically connect the user to Wi-Fi networks controlled by cyber attackers, allowing them to intercept their communications.
'QR codes are a fertile ground for potential manipulation, especially as they appear in various everyday contexts such as receipts, flyers, and signage. Attackers have nearly endless possibilities to exploit them. As these codes have already become an integral part of our daily lives, it is essential for users to know how to use them safely and responsibly,' says Seifallah Jedidi, Head of Consumer Channel for META at Kaspersky.

Reddit reaping the rewards of AI strategy
Reddit's shares jumped 15 per cent before the bell on Friday after it reported quarterly results that exceeded Street expectations, boosting investor confidence in the platform's AI-based advertising tools and strong user engagement, reported Reuters. The company's rosy outlook comes on the heels of similarly upbeat results from ad industry leaders such as Meta and Alphabet, underscoring a broader sector shift as advertisers gravitate towards platforms that provide artificial-intelligence tools to create more personalised campaigns. The company expects third-quarter revenue of between $535 million and $545 million, well above analysts' average estimate of $473 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. Reddit's focus on understanding user intent through authentic community conversations positions it to unlock new monetisation opportunities, said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. "Being able to home in on exactly the kind of consumer who might be open to splurge on what a seller is offering has made sites like Reddit hugely popular with advertisers," Hewson said. Reddit's results, along with those of Google and Meta, signal the ad industry's resilience in the face of growing economic uncertainty brought on by shifting US trade policy. The company's diverse ad offerings, including ads inserting brands directly within conversations on its subreddit discussions, remain attractive to marketers. Reddit's daily active unique visitors increased 21 per cent, with analysts saying stabilising daily active user trends are bolstering investor confidence in the platform's "long-term growth narrative". Despite variable Google-driven traffic posing a headwind in the second quarter, Reddit's US daily active users held steady, expressing confidence that the company's unique content was valuable to both Google and searchers, analysts at Piper Sandler said. The company has been investing in new products, search capabilities and international expansion to offset inconsistent user traffic. If premarket gains hold, Reddit is set to add about $4 billion to its market cap.

PCDMA warns ‘Abrupt rollout of FBR's new e-invoicing disastrous for SMEs'
KARACHI: The Pakistan Chemicals & Dyes Merchants Association (PCDMA) has warned that the abrupt rollout of the Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) new e-invoicing system, set to take effect from August 1, 2025, could prove disastrous for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) due to a lack of preparation and consultation with stakeholders. Terming the move unfeasible and poorly timed, PCDMA Chairman Salim Valimuhammad urged the FBR to delay implementation, arguing that most traders lack the technical infrastructure, training, and resources necessary to comply with the new digital requirements. PCDMA Chairman labelled the sudden implementation as 'unjust and disastrous' for businesses, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). He criticized the FBR for rolling out the system without conducting awareness campaigns, training programmes, or seminars to equip taxpayers for compliance. 'The FBR's schedule is completely detached from ground realities,' Valimuhammad said. 'Most taxpayers lack the IT infrastructure, technical expertise, and even stable electricity needed to adopt this system.' He highlighted that small traders, in particular, are ill-equipped to register, issue vouchers, and generate e-invoices overnight without proper guidance. The PCDMA chairman also pointed out the absence of stakeholder consultation prior to the issuance of the SRO 1413 (l)12O25. He noted that many businesses have sought a 60-day extension to prepare for the transition, but the FBR has yet to provide a clear roadmap. Valimuhammad proposed a phased implementation, starting with public limited companies, followed by a performance review before extending the policy to smaller businesses. 'If the e-invoicing system hasn't been fully successful for companies with turnovers exceeding one billion rupees, how can it be imposed on small traders with even fewer resources?' he questioned. Expressing willingness to cooperate, Valimuhammad offered PCDMA's support for industry-wide training. 'If we are educated on this system, we will ensure all our members are trained. I am ready to learn even at this stage in my life, but we must be taught first,' he said. The PCDMA chairman urged the FBR chairman to defer the e-invoicing mandate until comprehensive training and awareness initiatives are in place, warning that the current approach risks disrupting business operations across the country.
