Tripura girl dies by suicide after teacher scolds her; probe panel visits school

Indian Express31-07-2025
Days after a schoolgirl allegedly died by suicide after being scolded by her teacher in South Tripura district, a three-member committee investigating the incident visited her school in Belonia on Wednesday.
According to sources, the teacher scolded the 15-year-old girl, accusing her of cheating in an exam and allegedly threw her answer script away on July 24. The girl died a day later.
'We have started our investigation to highlight the real side of the incident. We will also visit her home and talk to her parents. After that, we will submit our report to the higher authority, which will take a decision,' said a member of the committee that interacted with students and others at the school.
Students protested at the school, demanding action against the teacher who had allegedly scolded the girl.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is also the school education minister, ordered the investigation after the incident triggered a massive outrage on social media. Netizens highlighted central government directives, the Right to Education Act, and court guidelines that prohibit any form of corporal punishment and psychological abuse in schools.
The chief minister's office had earlier said the three-member committee would submit its report by Wednesday.
The committee members are Lisa Bardhan, Joint Director of Elementary Education; Kajal Kumar Bhowmik, Officer on Special Duty at the Directorate of Secondary Education; and Sudip Sarkar, Officer on Special Duty at the office of the District Education Officer, Tripura West.

Ahmedabad school strike: Teachers return to work after show-cause notice

A day after the Ahmedabad City District Education Office (DEO) issued two show-cause notices to a private school in Maninagar for allegedly staging a protest over salary issues during school hours on Monday, the teachers called off their agitation on Tuesday and returned to work. The Diwan Ballubhai High School teachers in their response to the notice stated that they 'were unaware' that they had to inform the DEO office about the strike. The school management also submitted its response in writing to the DEO office on Tuesday. In their written reply to the notice issued by Ahmedabad (city) DEO Rohit Choudhary, teachers have alleged discrimination in the recent salary hike given by the school administration 'We had verbally brought the matter to the notice of the school principal twice and had requested him to look into it but there was no response … This was the reason we went on strike. We were unaware that we had to give information in writing to the DEO regarding the strike,' the teachers stated. 'We believe that students and parents have faced inconvenience due to the strike, which was not our intention,' the teachers said. Officials at the DEO office said that as of now no action has been taken against the teachers. The management in its response to the show cause notice has stated that the school has introduced a 'performance based' increment process from this year. 'It is up to the DEO to take action as we have submitted our response. Teachers not going to class is uncalled for. They could have followed the process, reached out to the principal or management if they had any grievances. The increment as per the performance, which we had introduced from this year, was announced on Friday and they went on a strike on Monday,' Diwan Ballubhai trust managing trustee Amitabh Thakore told The Indian Express. Earlier a flat increment was given to the school staff instead of performance-based evaluation from this year. Citing a violation of Right to Education Act, DEO Chaudhary on Monday had demanded a reply to the show cause notices issued to teachers and management, by Tuesday. 'Teachers sat on a dharna over the salary increment issue. They did not have any prior approval and they did not inform us also about any such protest. Due to their protest, the students had to suffer. Same goes with the management… why did they fail in resolving the issue and why was it not discussed with the DEO office,' Chaudhary told The Indian Express. 'It is to be informed that on 11/08/2025, the teachers have gone on strike in the school. Due to this incident, the students were made to sit in the classroom without any academic work and the DEO was also not informed about it in advance,' the notice said. 'Also, the school did not give any reply when the parents asked the school management about the issue,' the notice stated. 'Why should you not be held responsible for spoiling the academic work of the students today? And why should your one-day salary not be deducted for affecting the academic work of the children due to your disagreement with the trust?,' stated the notice. 'You have put the future of the children at stake, which is considered a serious matter. Thus, you have clearly violated the rules of the RTE Act 2009… for which why should punitive action not be taken against you? All teachers are requested to submit an explanation regarding this immediately through the school principal within a day. If there is a failure to do so, it will be assumed that you have nothing to say and further action will be taken as per the rules,' stated the notice further.

Protesters demand crackdown on B'deshi armed group in Tripura

Agartala: About 1,000 protesters under the banner of the Conscious Citizens' Forum staged a demonstration at Amarpur in Gomati district of Tripura on Tuesday, demanding crackdown on Bangladeshi armed group Parbattyo Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS). The protesters submitted a memorandum to chief minister Manik Saha, seeking action against the Bangladeshi armed group PCJSS led by Santu Larma. The memorandum alleged, "While illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh regularly enter Tripura through various border points, the PCJSS is orchestrating organised illegal immigration." It claimed that overground leaders and cadres of the PCJSS from Bangladesh have settled in Tripura, while armed cadres have established camps in border areas within the state. It cited the arrest of 13 members of the Santu group from Hapania in Agartala, who were receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained while illegally entering India, as evidence of the group's deep infiltration. The memorandum further alleged that PCJSS members are involved in drug trafficking, smuggling of Burmese cigarettes, cattle trafficking, and arms smuggling. It claimed that the group receives financial and political support from Pakistan's ISI and elements within Bangladesh. According to the memorandum, PCJSS members have settled in Nandan Nagar and Nagicherra in Agartala, and established armed camps in Narayanpur, Mog Para, Lakkhidar Para, Korollyachari, Kamalakha (Gandachara sub-division), Midhingechari (Kanchanpur sub-division), and Sushenpara (Baghechara) under Amarpur Division along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The protestors alleged that PCJSS cadres demand taxes from Indian citizens visiting border areas and intimidate them, preventing any activity along the border. They also claimed that PCJSS cadres threaten Indian citizens inside Tripura through their Indian agents. The memorandum demanded immediate and strict action to secure Tripura's borders, arrest and deport all PCJSS leaders and cadres, and dismantle their camps within the state. Ahmedabad DEO issues show-cause notices to school, management after staff sits on a dharna over salary issues

The Ahmedabad City District Education Office has issued two show-cause notices to a private school in Maninagar for allegedly staging a protest over salary issues during school hours on Monday. The teachers and management of Diwan Ballubhai High School have received separate notices from District Education Officer Rohit Chaudhary, citing a violation of the Right to Education Act. The notice demands a reply by Tuesday. 'Teachers sat on a dharna over the salary increment issue. They did not have any prior approval and they did not inform us also about any such protest. Due to their protest, the students had to suffer. Same goes with the management… why did they fail in resolving the issue and why was it not discussed with the DEO office,' Ahmedabad (city) District Education Officer Rohit Chaudhary told The Indian Express. 'It is to be informed that on 11/08/2025, the teachers of the school have gone on strike in the school. Due to this incident, the students, studying in the school, were made to sit in the classroom without any academic work and the District Education Officer was also not informed about it in advance,' the notice said. A similar notice was issued to the school management. According to the officials, nearly 100 teaching and non-teaching staff of the school's primary section (Maninagar branch) have alleged 'discrimination in their annual increment'. Though the management had assured them of resolving the issue, however, with no action in sight, the teachers protested on the campus, said sources. A few parents meanwhile alleged that the children were not allowed to leave the school after the morning shift as the school gates were locked. Despite multiple attempts, the school management could not be reached for their remarks over the issue.
