Ahmedabad school strike: Teachers return to work after show-cause notice

A day after the Ahmedabad City District Education Office (DEO) issued two show-cause notices to a private school in Maninagar for allegedly staging a protest over salary issues during school hours on Monday, the teachers called off their agitation on Tuesday and returned to work.
The Diwan Ballubhai High School teachers in their response to the notice stated that they 'were unaware' that they had to inform the DEO office about the strike.
The school management also submitted its response in writing to the DEO office on Tuesday.
In their written reply to the notice issued by Ahmedabad (city) DEO Rohit Choudhary, teachers have alleged discrimination in the recent salary hike given by the school administration
'We had verbally brought the matter to the notice of the school principal twice and had requested him to look into it but there was no response … This was the reason we went on strike. We were unaware that we had to give information in writing to the DEO regarding the strike,' the teachers stated.
'We believe that students and parents have faced inconvenience due to the strike, which was not our intention,' the teachers said.
Officials at the DEO office said that as of now no action has been taken against the teachers.
The management in its response to the show cause notice has stated that the school has introduced a 'performance based' increment process from this year.
'It is up to the DEO to take action as we have submitted our response. Teachers not going to class is uncalled for. They could have followed the process, reached out to the principal or management if they had any grievances. The increment as per the performance, which we had introduced from this year, was announced on Friday and they went on a strike on Monday,' Diwan Ballubhai trust managing trustee Amitabh Thakore told The Indian Express.
Earlier a flat increment was given to the school staff instead of performance-based evaluation from this year.
Citing a violation of Right to Education Act, DEO Chaudhary on Monday had demanded a reply to the show cause notices issued to teachers and management, by Tuesday.
'Teachers sat on a dharna over the salary increment issue. They did not have any prior approval and they did not inform us also about any such protest. Due to their protest, the students had to suffer. Same goes with the management… why did they fail in resolving the issue and why was it not discussed with the DEO office,' Chaudhary told The Indian Express.
'It is to be informed that on 11/08/2025, the teachers have gone on strike in the school. Due to this incident, the students were made to sit in the classroom without any academic work and the DEO was also not informed about it in advance,' the notice said.
'Also, the school did not give any reply when the parents asked the school management about the issue,' the notice stated.
'Why should you not be held responsible for spoiling the academic work of the students today? And why should your one-day salary not be deducted for affecting the academic work of the children due to your disagreement with the trust?,' stated the notice. 'You have put the future of the children at stake, which is considered a serious matter. Thus, you have clearly violated the rules of the RTE Act 2009… for which why should punitive action not be taken against you? All teachers are requested to submit an explanation regarding this immediately through the school principal within a day. If there is a failure to do so, it will be assumed that you have nothing to say and further action will be taken as per the rules,' stated the notice further.

Students watch porn on screen in Rajgarh school, probe ordered

Bhopal: Students at PM Shri School in Suthalia, Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, allegedly played a pornographic clip on a classroom LED screen during school hours, and a video of the act went viral. The principal of the school told TOI that the video dates to the last academic session when he was not posted there. The viral footage shows around 13 students sitting on chairs watching the clip, while some recorded it on their mobile phones. No teacher or school staff member was present in the room at the time. District education officer (DEO) Karan Singh Bhilala ordered an inquiry by the Biaora block education officer and appointed a three-member fact-finding team. The panel, comprising the principals of Jirapur Utkrishta Vidyalaya and Telan PM Shri Vidyalaya, along with the Narsinghgarh block education officer, has been directed to submit its report within three days. Bhillala assured that the LED screens in classrooms are meant for educational purposes, and any misuse will be dealt with strictly. Responding to a section of media, Rajgarh child welfare committee (CWC) chairman Saket Sharma described the incident as "deeply unfortunate" and said it points to "serious gaps in monitoring and discipline." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo The CWC has issued notices to the principal and DEO, seeking explanations before deciding on further action. "Schools must ensure that digital resources are properly supervised to prevent such misuse," Sharma said. Principal Hemant Yadav, who took charge in May this year, claimed the incident occurred months before he joined. He alleged that a local youth, identified as Brijmohan Suryavanshi, tried to blackmail him for Rs 50,000 by threatening to make public the clip. "When I refused to pay, the video was circulated on social media," Yadav said, adding that he is considering legal action. Following the video's circulation, several parents and community members gathered at the school demanding accountability. They urged the education department to introduce stricter classroom monitoring, especially when digital equipment is in use. Local organisations have also called for counselling for the students involved, along with disciplinary action, to prevent recurrence. Air India 171 plane crash: Victim families who hired US law firm to file RTI plea for flight recorder data, other info

The victim families of the Air India 171 air crash of June 12, who have engaged US law firm Beasley Allen, will file applications under Right to Information (RTI) act seeking raw data on the crash, the firm's Principal Attorney Mike Andrews told The Indian Express on Wednesday. The RTI applications will be filed with the 'entities who have the FDR (Flight Data Recorder) data', Andrews, who is concluding his second visit to Gujarat on Wednesday, said. Andrews, whose law firm will make 'direct appeals' to Air India and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) for information sourced from the site of the crash that killed 241 of the 242 passengers and crew and 19 on the ground, said that over 80 victim families, including passengers and those who lost their lives on ground, had signed contracts with the firm so far. The firm is looking to do a 'reconstruction' of the crash and could proceed under the US product liability law once it gets the data. There were 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese, one Canadian and 169 Indian nationals on board the Gatwick (London)-bound Boeing 787 that went down soon after takeoff, crashing into the mess building of the BJ Medical College at Meghaninagar in Ahmedabad. 'We have some victims who were cooking food in the medical school, some who were out serving tea, and some who were on the scooters passing by. Those families highlight the fact that aviation safety affects everybody. They never bought plane tickets. They never expected it to be involved in an aviation crash,' said Andrews, with rakhis tied on his wrist by a Diu family which lost a daughter in the crash. Reiterating that his focus would be to 'find out what happened', Andrews said this is a first among the air crash cases he has handled in 30 years where there is a survivor and several ground casualties. He said he met the lone survivor, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh at his home in Diu 'briefly' — 'not as his attorney'. Vishwash lost his brother Ajay in the crash. His family is not among those who have signed up with Beasley Allen. 'The goal and the focus is to find out why and what happened. We do that after getting the data. First, we figure out what happened, and if it shows that Boeing is at fault or there's a manufacturing defect or a design defect, and those are different… we'll know if there's a claim for the product failure. That's my area of expertise. If that's the case, we would anticipate filing individual actions in the United States in federal court on behalf of each family,' the attorney said. According to Andrews, though the crash site is here, the company (Boeing) is American and thus the US product liability law would apply. 'If it is a defect, the company is in the US, the executives, engineers, decisions, the paperwork, the witnesses that matter to the engineering decisions, those are all in the United States. That is why it is so important to bring these cases there, because the goal of this is to fix accountability,' he told The Indian Express. Andrews said the findings of this investigation will decide what to fix. 'If it is a pilot issue, if it's a pilot error, if it's a maintenance problem, if it's something local to Air India, it should certainly bring about changes there. If it is a design problem or a maintenance problem with the design of the aircraft, and if this is a problem that's shown up in previous incidents, then something has to be done immediately to change that'. Andrews said he would not 'interfere' with the AAIB probe into the crash. 'We don't want to interfere with what they're doing. We'll file letters to them. The families or us on their behalf will seek information under the RTI Act. Beyond that, we know that there are potential petitions available to us through various courts. We would like to avoid that, if at all possible,' he said. He added that the firm was working with local counsel to 'determine the applicability of RTI to the various entities'. Visiting the site again On Tuesday evening, Andrews was part of a candlelight vigil held at the site of the air crash with some 25-30 victim families. Comparing it to his visit in July, Andrews recalled how the last time he was at the 'exact spot where the survivor walked out' and how it was cordoned off and 'really really quiet'. On the day marking two months of the crash, the cordon was lifted and the area had 'come back to life' with the traffic, he said. 'There were a lot of emotions in that group, you know, one of them was telling me: This is the first time I am seeing the place where my husband was killed. And I mean, that's powerful to hear somebody say that I don't think there's a thing like healing or closure, but a new normal that you're dealing with,' he said. Speaking about his role and interest in the case, Andrews said he would not approach anything with an agenda. 'I am curious. I want to know what happened. And after that, we'll know if somebody's accountable and who is responsible,' Andrews said. According to the Beasley Allen contract terms, there is no cost upfront but in the event there is a 'recovery', there is a 30% 'contingency fee in the end', says Andrews, who is headed to the UK to meet more victim families.

Banaskantha ‘honour killing': Victim had told parents she left home because they were against her further studies, say police

New revelations in the alleged honour killing of 18-year-old Chandrika Chaudhary suggest her family opposed her further education, contributing to her decision to elope with her live-in partner, Haresh Chaudhary — both belonged to Tharad taluka in Gujarat's Banaskantha and were from the same Chaudhary-Patel community. The investigation has implicated Chandrika's father, her uncle, and the father's cousin in her murder. According to police, Chandrika had remained in touch with her parents after leaving home and cited her family's disapproval of her pursuing further studies as a reason for her departure. As per the investigations, it was on June 25, two days before the Gujarat High Court was scheduled to hear a habeas corpus petition filed by Haresh Chaudhary over her disappearance, that she was found dead. Her body was discovered hanging in the courtyard of her parent's home in Dantiya village, staged to appear like a suicide case. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Suman Nala of Danta Division told The Indian Express, 'Chandrika had taken the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in May. Her parents had subsequently taken her back home from the Palanpur hostel. After she left her house with Haresh, she was tracked by the Tharad Police and returned to her family on June 12. She was at her home when the NEET results were declared on June 14 and she had scored well. She wanted to study further but her parents, it primarily appears, did not agree with her.' Chandrika belonged to the Chaudhary- Patel community, who are traditionally agrarian. The officer said that Chandrika possibly wanted to study further to be a doctor or nurse. Notably, the FIR filed on August 6, based on the complaint filed by Haresh Chaudhary, who was already married and had a son, stated, 'I had taken Chandrika for her NEET exam and then dropped her back near her hostel. On May 4, Chandrika's cousins, Suresh and Haresh, took her to a relative's wedding where she stayed for up to a week after which she went to her village.' The FIR stated, 'Chandrika kept telling her parents that she wanted to study nursing and take other exams but her parents refused her requests. However, later her father (Sendha Darga Patel) took her to a nursing college in Palanpur but since they didn't have all the documents, the admission process did not go through and they returned to the village.' 'After Sendha informed his brother Jayram that the admission did not go through, Jayram told him that Chandrika was of marriageable age, that there was no need to educate her further, and advised him to take away her phone and make her perform household chores. Chandrika then called and told me that her parents had refused to let her study further and that she was afraid that they would come to know about their affair and kill her. She asked me to elope with her,' the FIR quoted Haresh as saying. On June 4, Haresh and Chandrika eloped. The duo signed a contract of live-in relationship at the Mirzapur court in Ahmedabad on June 5. They then travelled to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. On June 12, the Tharad Police along with Chandrika's cousin Hira took both of them from a resort in Rajasthan to Tharad Police station in Banaskantha. The NEET results were declared on June 14, two days after Chandrika had been handed over to her parents, while Haresh was arrested, first in an assault case and then in a Prohibition case. He was released on bail on June 21. Meanwhile, ASP Nala said, 'We have seen messages sent by Chandrika to her parents after leaving with Haresh, telling them that she wished to study further and that she had to run away because they would not allow her to do so.' According to the FIR, Haresh, after being released from prison, came to know about the messages from Chandrika, on his phone, allegedly pleading with him 'to save her because her family wanted to marry her off and if she didn't agree, they would kill her'. On June 23, Haresh's lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court, leading to an order asking Tharad Police to present her in court on June 27. However, Haresh said that on June 25, he learnt that Chandrika had died. He then wrote an application to the police seeking an inquiry into her death. When the petition came up for hearing on June 27, the HC was informed that the girl for whom the petition was filed, had died. Following this, the bench of Justice Vaibhavi Nanavati disposed of the plea after taking on record the girl's death certificate. However, the inquiry into the suspicious death and hurried cremation, found that she had allegedly been drugged with sleeping pills by her uncle Shivram and then murdered by strangulation, before being hung in the courtyard. While the original FIR on August 6 named only Chandrika's father Sendha Darga Patel and his brother Shivram Darga Patel for the alleged murder, the police later, on August 11, also arrested Sendha's cousin Naran Sava Patel in the case. Even as Chandrika's father Sendha Darga Patel continues to evade the police, The Indian Express has now learnt that Chandrika's entire family has also abandoned their house in Danitya village.
