Olympique Lyon, 7-time French champions, relegated due to financial irregularities
Seven time French champions Olympique Lyon have been relegated from Ligue 1, French football's financial watchdog (DNCG) said on Tuesday, Juune 24, following an audit of the club. Lyon were provisionally demoted by the DNCG in November due to the poor state of their finances and the decision was confirmed on Tuesday after a meeting between club owner John Textor and the DNCG.advertisementThe club has said that it would appeal the decision immediately. Speaking via a statement, the club criticised the decision and said it had worked closely with the DNCG, satisfying all their requests."Olympique Lyonnais takes note of the incomprehensible decision handed down by the DNCG this evening and confirms that it will appeal immediately," the club said.
"With demonstrated funds and sporting success that has earned us a place in European competition two years running, we sincerely fail to understand how an administrative decision could relegate such a great French club." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Fabrizio Romano (@fabriziorom)The decision to relegate Lyon comes a day after US businessman Textor sold a 43% stake in English club Crystal Palace.advertisement"Thanks to the equity contributions from our shareholders and the sale of Crystal Palace, our cash position has improved considerably and we have more than sufficient resources for the 2025/26 season," the Lyon statement added. In October, Eagle Football Group, led by John Textor, disclosed debts amounting to approximately 422 million ($574.85 million), raising serious concerns about the financial stability of Olympique Lyonnais.Since then, the club has sought to improve its financial standing by selling several players, including Maxence Caqueret to Como and Rayan Cherki to Manchester City. Despite these efforts, Lyon has so far failed to convince the relevant authorities that its financial health has recovered enough to lift existing sanctions.Ahead of the official ruling, the 59-year-old Textor expressed optimism about the club's finances.'You can see from our shareholders' contributions that we've injected new capital—not only to satisfy the DNCG, but also to meet UEFA licensing requirements. And with the recent sale of Crystal Palace, our liquidity has significantly improved,' he told reporters on Tuesday.Lyon, who won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2002 and 2008, secured a Europa League berth for next season after finishing sixth in the league. However, if the decision to uphold sanctions remains in place, Stade de Reims—relegated after a playoff defeat to Metz—could take Lyon's place in Ligue 1 next season. As of now, neither Reims nor the French football governing body (LFP) has issued an official comment.- Ends

Kuldeep could be the X-factor for India: Ex-ENG cricketer Monty Panesar
Former England spinner Monty Panesar has suggested that India should consider replacing Shardul Thakur with Kuldeep Yadav for the second Test against England in Birmingham, where spin is expected to play a more significant role. India suffered a defeat in the opening Test at Headingley as England successfully chased 371, powered by Ben Duckett's 149. 'Kuldeep could be the X-factor for India' Panesar believes Edgbaston's pitch offers enough spin for India to benefit from playing both Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with the latter bringing a much-needed attacking edge. 'Kuldeep could be the X-factor India need. The surface in Birmingham does tend to help spinners, and Kuldeep has the ability to trouble batters even without much turn,' Panesar told PTI. Kuldeep's record backs up Panesar's point, the left-arm wrist-spinner has 56 wickets in 13 Tests at an average of 22.16. Comparatively, Thakur has claimed 33 wickets from 12 Tests with a higher average and strike rate. Thakur's limited contribution with both bat and ball at Leeds, including 2 wickets for 89 runs in 16 overs, raises questions about his current value in English conditions. Panesar argued that if Thakur isn't going to bowl extended spells, his inclusion makes little sense. While some may debate replacing Jadeja with Kuldeep, Panesar believes the better option would be to field both spinners, Jadeja as the containing bowler and Kuldeep as the strike option. 'Jadeja bowls quickly and economically, but Kuldeep brings a real threat. However, Kuldeep can't really be used to contain. That's why India might opt for two spinners, with Jadeja playing the holding role and Kuldeep going on the attack,' said Panesar. Panesar, who played a crucial role in England's 2012 Test series victory in India, concluded that Kuldeep's current form and ability to challenge batters on flatter pitches should earn him a spot in the XI for the second Test.

IND vs ENG: 'It is going to sting' — Rishabh Pant reacts after heartbreaking loss at Headingley
Rishabh Pant of India (Photo by) Even as England pulled off a remarkable five-wicket win in the opening Test at Headingley, India's Rishabh Pant walked away with a record that will go down in history. In a bittersweet moment, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, an extraordinary feat that stood out in an otherwise forgettable outing for India. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Pant posted on X after the loss: "It is going to sting us for a while but we BELIEVE in bouncing back stronger." The message reflected both the pain and the resolve within the Indian camp after letting a golden opportunity slip away. Pant was India's heartbeat with the bat throughout the match. After scoring a fluent 134 in the first innings, the southpaw returned on Day 4 under immense pressure and counterattacked his way to 118 in the second, bringing up his second century of the match in just 130 balls. With this, he entered an elite club of Indian batters—Gavaskar, Dravid, Kohli, among others who've notched tons in both innings of a Test. More impressively, Pant became only the second wicketkeeper in Test historyafter Zimbabwe's Andy Flower in 2001—to achieve this feat. India Outplayed at Headingley | England Go 1-0 Up in the Series | IND vs ENG 1st Test His attacking style was once again on full display, particularly against young spinner Shoaib Bashir, whom Pant swept, reverse-swept, and charged at with unflinching intent. He also surpassed MS Dhoni to become the highest run-scoring Indian wicketkeeper in Tests on English soil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Quiz: Who's that IPL player? India had posted 471 and 364, and set England a daunting target of 371. But Ben Duckett 's explosive 149, Root's calm 53*, and a late flourish from Jamie Smith proved too much. Despite the heartbreak, Pant's heroics gave India a fighting chance and reminded the world of his rising stature in the Test arena. Now with four Tests to go, India will look to bounce back, and if Pant's words and form are any indication, they'll do it with fire. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. 'No space': Massive protests in Venice over Jeff Bezos' wedding
This weekend's star-studded Venice wedding of multi-billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez has galvanized activist groups that are protesting it as a sign of the growing disparity between the haves and have-not's as well as disregard of the city's residents. Critics also cite Amazon's labor practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Jeff Bezos's political associations as additional reasons for concern. (Reuters) About a dozen Venetian organizations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups, have united to protest the multi-day event under the banner 'No Space for Bezos,' a play on words also referring to the bride's recent space flight. They have staged small-scale protests, unfurling anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites. They were joined this week by Greenpeace and the British group 'Everyone Hates Elon,' which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk, to unfurl a giant banner in St. Mark's Square protesting purported tax breaks for billionaires. 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX,' read the banner, which featured a huge image of Bezos. Police quickly took it away. There has been no comment from Bezos' representatives on the protests. The local activists had planned a more organized protest for Saturday, aiming to obstruct access to canals with boats to prevent guests from reaching a wedding venue. Then they modified the protest to a march from the train station after claiming a victory, asserting that their pressure forced organizers to change the venue to the Arsenale, a more easily secured site beyond Venice's congested center. Also read: 'Pay more tax': Giant banner targeting Jeff Bezos appears in Venice before lavish wedding 'It will be a strong, decisive protest, but peaceful,'' said Federica Toninello, an activist with the Social Housing Assembly network. 'We want it to be like a party, with music, to make clear what we want our Venice to look like." Among the 200 guests confirmed to be attending the wedding are Mick Jagger, Ivanka Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio. Venice, renowned for its romantic canal vistas, hosts hundreds of weddings each year, not infrequently those of the rich and famous. Previous celebrity weddings, like that of George Clooney to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, were embraced by the public. Hundreds turned out to wish the couple well at City Hall. Bezos has a different political and business profile, said Tommaso Cacciari, a prominent figure in the movement that successfully pushed for a ban on cruise ships over 25,000 tons traveling through the Giudecca Canal in central Venice. 'Bezos is not a Hollywood actor,'' Cacciari said. 'He is an ultra-billionaire who sat next to Donald Trump during the inauguration, who contributed to his re-election and is contributing in a direct and heavy way to this new global obscurantism.'' Critics also cite Amazon's labor practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Bezos' political associations as additional reasons for concern. Activists also argue that the Bezos wedding exemplifies broader failures in municipal governance, particularly the prioritization of tourism over residents' needs. They cite measures such as the day-tripper tax — which critics argue reinforces Venice's image as a theme park — as ineffective. Chief among their concerns is the lack of investment in affordable housing and essential services. City officials have defended the wedding. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called the event an honor for Venice, and the city denied the wedding would cause disruptions. "Venice once again reveals itself to be a global stage,'' Brugnaro told The Associated Press, adding he hoped to meet Bezos while he was in town. Meanwhile, a Venetian environmental research association, Corila, issued a statement saying Bezos' Earth Fund was supporting its work with an 'important donation.' Corila, which unites university scholars and Italy's main national research council in researching Venetian protection strategies, wouldn't say how much Bezos was donating but said contact began in April, well before the protests started.
