Traffic Chaos at Cotton Market Sq To Persist For At Least Four Months

Nagpur: Commuters passing through the busy Cotton Market Square will have to endure traffic snarls for at least four to five months more, as two major infrastructure projects continue to disrupt the area.
For the last three months, the area has been witnessing traffic snarls because of the simultaneous infrastructure projects, leaving commuters frustrated.
The Railways shut down the crucial underpass that connects Sitabuldi to Cotton Market for the extension of the fifth and sixth railway lines since the end of April. Simultaneously, MahaMetro barricaded large portions of the main square and installed temporary pillars as part of its ongoing Skywalk construction.
These simultaneous projects have created a major bottleneck, forcing motorists to take long detours and worsening congestion in the area.
With the underpass closed, motorists traveling from Gandhi Sagar towards Sitabuldi currently have to use the other underpass near Anand Talkies. However, at the entrance of this stretch, MahaMetro erected a temporary platform, which is affecting traffic movement.
Similarly, one of the major issues is the movement of heavy vehicles from the railway station side, which passes through the currently opened new underpass.

The underpass regularly witnesses traffic jams, and the road has become narrow because of the work on the old underpass.
"The underpass at Cotton Market Square is an important link for both sides of the railway line. Since it was closed, the detour route is witnessing heavy traffic jams. Similarly, the square is also in bad condition due to MahaMetro's work, which has reduced the width of the road. The authorities should not have given permission for simultaneous works," said Vishrut Kale, a regular commuter.
In charge of the Cotton Market traffic zone, Pramod Pore said that the underpass is likely to remain closed for more than four to five months. "We gave permission to railways for six months. Currently, three months are completed, but the work could take another four to five months as they are laying the fifth and sixth railway lines. Similarly, MahaMetro's work will take at least three to four months to complete," said Pore, adding that they are regularly deploying traffic cops at the spot during peak hours to regulate traffic.
This means that the area will continue to witness crippled traffic for at least four to five months.
A senior MahaMetro official said that the skywalk work would be completed by the end of October, after which all the temporary structures would be removed.

Union proposes to convert old CNG autos to electric
Mumbai: The Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union has prepared a roadmap to convert existing old CNG autos in the city to electric autos by retrofitting. It has proposed to the MMRTA to allow drivers/permit holders to convert autos to electric once they reach the lifespan of 16 years in MMR. Such autos can switch to electric and ply on roads with zero permit and no pollution for another 5-10 years, union leader Thampy Kurien said. The union has been called to the transport commissioner's office for discussions on this issue on Thursday. Also, the cost of retrofitting is around Rs 1.6 lakh, which is less than the cost of a normal auto (Rs 2.8 lakh) and an e-auto (Rs 3.8 lakh). A proposed model of a retrofitted e-auto has been approved by RTO and registered in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune. "The union will bring this auto to Mumbai for a demo and test drive on city roads. We will ask drivers to take multiple rides on all kinds of roads—narrow lanes or the arterial road. After getting good feedback, we plan to introduce these kinds of autos in Mumbai," Kurien said. The union has also petitioned the govt to set up more charging stations and will also push for battery swapping stations in the suburbs. Battery swapping can save significant time compared to charging an electric vehicle, particularly for electric three-wheelers. "We are asking MMRTA to allow the autos to continue in electric mode so that the owners/drivers can continue to earn a livelihood," Kurien added. A source from the auto trade said: "There is one problem with having autos running on battery. There is no need for a permit in such vehicles, although they are registered with green number plates. So, these vehicles can ply in MMRTA as well as go to the far-off villages and operate."

Govt gears up to issue e-khatas for 97 lakh rural properties
Bengaluru: In light of the govt planning to make e-khatas mandatory for property registrations from Oct, the rural development and panchayat raj (RDPR) department is gearing up to issue over 97 lakh e-khatas under a large-scale campaign titled 'Eswathu to doorsteps'. Unlike urban areas where digital literacy is relatively high and khata services are often accessed online, the move highlights the challenge of bridging the digital divide in rural regions. RDPR officials say the department manages about 1.5 crore property records — most of it still maintained manually in gram panchayat (GP) registers. Of these, over 97 lakh have been digitised and stored on the department's Panchatantra 2.0 platform. These records will now be used to issue e-khatas across Karnataka's villages, making it one of the largest rural documentation drives in recent times. Govt engages Tata Tech to upgrade state polytechnics
Lucknow: The UP govt in collaboration with Tata Technology Limited (TTL) would set up Tata Technology Excellence Centres in 121 govt polytechnics across the state to help these technical educational institutes meet industry requirements. In a govt order (GO), additional chief secretary, technical education, Narendra Bhooshan said the decision was taken to bridge the industry-academia gap prevalent in the diploma sector of technical education. "In polytechnics, some topics have become irrelevant or are not in accordance with industry requirements. These centres will upgrade them and bridged the industry-academia gap," Bhooshan said. For this, Rs 57.3 crore will be spent on installation of machines and equipment in each of the 121 polytechnics. Of the total Rs 6935.8 crore, 87%, that is, Rs 6034.2 crore, will be borne by TTL, and the remaining 13% (Rs 1063.9 crore) by the govt. Also, the state govt will spend an additional Rs 858 crore – Rs 709.2 lakh per institution – towards civil infrastructure and other basic facilities. In the first phase, 45 polytechnic institutions will be upgraded. TTL will also make available two trainers for the first two years and one trainer for the third year in each selected institute from its own sources.
