Mysterious Illness Decimating Sea Stars Finally Identified

A mysterious illness has killed billions of sea stars in the past decade. After a four-year search, scientists have uncovered the culprit: a bacterium known as Vibrio pectenicida. The team reported its findings this week in Nature Ecology & Evolution.
The strange illness is known as sea star wasting disease, and it causes starfish to disintegrate to death. It is the largest marine epidemic among noncommercial species that has ever been documented, and it has affected more than 20 species of sea stars along the Pacific Coast of North America. Approximately 90 percent of sunflower sea stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides) have died from the ailment, so many that they are now a critically endangered species.

Researchers are unsure of where this bacterium came from and why it broke out. But there is evidence that warmer ocean temperatures are linked to bigger outbreaks. In British Columbia, the most severe outbreaks happen late in the summer, says study co-author Alyssa Gehman, a marine disease ecologist at the province's Hakai Institute and the University of British Columbia. And that suggests that temperature and possibly even climate change might affect this disease.
'Sea stars [such as] sunflower stars are really important members of their communities,' Gehman says. When the sunflower sea stars lost about 90 percent of their population, there were huge increases in sea urchins (a prey of sea stars) off the coast of California. The spiny creatures are massive grazers of kelp forests, which are crucial members of marine ecosystems, Gehman says. Underwater kelp forests store carbon and are homes for thousands of species. But once sea urchin populations boomed, there was a widespread loss of kelp forests.
To identify the disease, researchers ran more than 20 experiments from 2021 to 2024. In one experiment, they analyzed the genes of eight healthy sea stars and eight infected ones. While sitting in her office and comparing the genetics of the two groups, Melanie Prentice, a research scientist now at the Hakai Institute, thought, 'Gosh, there's so much Vibrio in these wasting sea stars, and there's really not much happening in these healthy sea stars in terms of Vibrio.' After toggling the data to see the specific Vibrio species, she found V. pectenicida in every single one of the wasting sea star samples. To validate the finding, Prentice and her team exposed healthy sea stars to V. pectenicida. From the 20 sunflower stars that the researchers exposed to V. pectenicida at varying doses, only one survived (this sea star was exposed to the lowest dose of the bacteria tested). The rest died from sea star wasting disease, providing the conclusive evidence the team needed, Prentice says.
'If you don't know what it is that's killing them, there's only so much you can do to try and save them,' Gehman says. 'So, there's a bunch of work that we can do now.'
One next step is to determine if the pathogen is unique to the sunflower sea star because there are still many other species affected by the disease, says Oregon State University marine ecologist Bruce Menge, who wasn't involved in the study. Prentice and her colleagues hope to breed sea stars that are resistant to the pathogen so they can survive in the wild.

The first author on the study and an evolutionary ecologist at the Hakai Institute and UBC, Melanie Prentice, told Tula: "When we lose billions of sea stars, that really shifts the ecological dynamics.' Prentice went on to describe the impact of losing a sea star. 'In the absence of sunflower stars, sea urchin populations increase, which means the loss of kelp forests, and that has broad implications for all the other marine species and humans that rely on them," she explained. "So losing a sea star goes far beyond the loss of that single species.' Signs of a rogue immune system may be present more than a decade before the debilitating physical symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) reveal themselves. A new study found poor mental health may be one of the earliest hints of this disease, which impacts about 2.8 million people globally. University of British Columbia epidemiologist Marta Ruiz-Algueró and colleagues investigated the medical histories of 2,038 patients with MS in Canada and compared them to 10,182 patients without. Related: They found patients who went on to develop MS had presented to their physicians with symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anxiety, and depression more often than the general population. What's more, these clues appeared as early as 15 years before more established symptoms were first detected. The researchers also identified a spike in visits to neurologists and ophthalmologists around 8 to 9 years before their diagnosis. This was then followed by a surge of visits for physical symptoms in the lead-up to diagnosis. "We're only now starting to understand what these early warning signs are, with mental health-related issues appearing to be among the earliest indicators," says Ruiz-Algueró. "These patterns suggest that MS has a long and complex prodromal phase – where something is happening beneath the surface but hasn't yet declared itself as MS." Symptoms of poor mental health are common throughout the population, the researchers caution, and most people who experience them will not go on to develop MS. Still, if we can better understand how such signs relate to MS, it may become possible to identify risk factors and earlier interventions. "MS can be difficult to recognize as many of the earliest signs – like fatigue, headache, pain, and mental health concerns – can be quite general and easily mistaken for other conditions," explains University of British Columbia epidemiologist Helen Tremlett. The immune systems of people with MS mistakenly attack their nerves' fatty protective coating, called the myelin sheath. This can eventually lead to pain, loss of sensation, and loss of motor function in different parts of the body, as the connection between the body and the brain becomes compromised. Fatigue, vision disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction are also common symptoms. While viral and bacterial infections have been implicated in triggering MS, and certain genes appear to make some people more susceptible, we don't yet fully understand what causes the immune system to go rogue. Therapies can help reduce relapses, but there's no treatment to prevent the disease's progress. Previous research has also identified a pattern of MS-specific antibodies in blood five or more years before characteristic symptoms arise. "Our findings dramatically shift the timeline for when these early warning signs are thought to begin, potentially opening the door to opportunities for earlier detection and intervention," concludes Tremlett. Florida reports 13 cases of flesh-eating bacteria; death toll climbs to eight

Florida has reported 13 cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria commonly known as 'flesh-eating,' across 11 counties, with the death toll rising to eight, according to the Florida Department of Health. 'Eight of these cases were related to wound exposure, and all cases have been sporadic and unrelated to an outbreak,' health officials told el Nuevo Herald. As of July 24, the state had reported four deaths: one in Bay County, one in Broward, another in Hillsborough, and one more in Walton. The counties where the other deaths occurred have not yet been disclosed. The highest number of Vibrio vulnificus cases in Florida was recorded in 2024, with 82 infections and 19 deaths. Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Sarasota counties 'experienced an unusual increase in cases due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene,' according to state health authorities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that extreme weather events, such as coastal flooding, hurricanes, and storm surges, can cause coastal waters to spread inland, increasing the risk of Vibrio infections in wounds among people exposed to these waters — especially older evacuees or those with underlying health conditions. A similar situation occurred in Florida after Hurricane Ian in 2022. Each year, an average of 150 to 200 cases are reported in the U.S., with most occurring in Gulf Coast states, according to the CDC. Most people infected with Vibrio experience diarrhea, and some may also have stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. One species, V. vulnificus, is known to cause life-threatening infections, and about one in five infected people die — sometimes within one to two days after becoming ill, according to the CDC. Louisiana has reported the most Vibrio vulnificus cases so far in 2025, with 17 infections — well above the state's annual average of seven, based on data from the Louisiana Department of Health. The bacteria live in coastal waters, including saltwater and brackish water (a mix of salt and fresh water). Most people become infected by eating raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. Infection can also occur when an open wound is exposed to water containing the bacteria, according to the CDC's website. The Florida Department of Health recommends taking steps to avoid infection, such as cooking seafood to safe internal temperatures before eating, keeping raw or undercooked seafood and their juices away from other foods. Other tips include: Washing your hands with soap and water after handling raw open wounds, cuts, or scrapes with a waterproof bandage when in contact with seawater, brackish water, floodwater, or standing cleaning wounds with clean water and soap after any exposure to such water, or to raw or undercooked seafood or their immediate medical attention if a wound becomes red, swollen, oozes pus, or shows other signs of infection such as fever, increasing pain, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, confusion, or disorientation.
