A toddler was found wandering on the side of a highway after a frantic four-day search — as cops revealed her mother made several unsettling online searches.
Claire Bell, 3, was discovered on an Ontario highway, in Canada, on Wednesday afternoon, some 145km west of her home in Montreal, Sûreté du Quebec, the provincial police, said.
The toddler was seen Sunday morning leaving an emergency exit of her apartment building in Montreal's La Salle region with her mother, Rachel Todd, and her pet chihuahua, according to Le Journal de Montreal.
Her mother reported Bell missing later in the day in Coteau-du-Lac, about 97km away from where she was last seen, New York Post reported.
A large-scale 'frantic' search was then carried out in Quebec and Ontario following the missing report, according to CTV.
Hundreds of police and civilians went searching for the missing tot, according to the Montreal Gazette.
Bell was found wandering alone on the side of Highway 417 in Ontario after a drone search was deployed over a witness tip, the outlet said.
A chihuahua that matched the description of one believed to be with Bell when she was last seen was found dead close to the souvenir shop where Todd reported her daughter missing.
Cops are now searching for an important witness who may have more information about what happened in the hours between when Bell was last seen and reported missing by her mother, the outlet reported.
The witness is a woman who lives on a farm either in the Montérégie region or in Ontario, speaks English and French, and had met the missing girl's mother on Sunday between when she was last seen and reported missing.
Todd, 34, was arrested and charged with child abandonment, according to the outlet.
Investigators allegedly found alarming online searches, including funeral arrangements and children's urns, when they looked through Todd's phone after her arrest, Le Journal de Montreal reported.
'This story really, really doesn't look good,' a police source working on the case told the outlet.
Court proceedings for Todd have been delayed until Friday, the Gazette said.

‘The war is not over': Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son released from US detention centre

New Zealander Sarah Shaw and her six-year-old son have been released from a US immigration detainment centre after three gruelling weeks. The mum and son were detained during a routine border crossing from Canada to the US on July 24. It quickly turned into a nightmare when the pair were refused release. Their concerned loved ones described the incident as 'abuse and federal kidnapping', pleading for their safe return in the weeks since. Ms Shaw's friend Victoria Besancon, who set up a GoFundMe for them that has raised over $90,000, shared the good news via the page on Sunday morning. 'Thanks for all your support and advocating. Sarah and her son have been released. While her lawyer's words were 'the war is not over' and there are still legal battles to be had, this portion has been won,' Ms Besancon's update read. 'Thank you to everyone who has supported, donated and reached out. We will continue to update the story as it unfolds but they are home safe and sound.' Ms Shaw and her son were detained by immigration and customs enforcement on July 24 and then transported to the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in South Texas. The 33-year-old, who has lived in the US since 2021 and works in juvenile detention, was returning from dropping her two eldest children at the airport in Vancouver, as they were catching a direct flight to visit their grandparents in New Zealand. While trying to return to the US, Ms Shaw was unexpectedly detained because she hadn't realised part of her Visa was still pending. Ms Shaw is on a 'combo card' visa – a two-in-one card that works as a work visa, and a 1-360 visa, which can grant immigration status to domestic violence survivors. She had received a letter confirming her visa renewal, but hadn't realised that the 1-360 element of her Visa was still pending approval. Ms Shaw requested humanitarian parole – an emergency pass into the US – which Ms Besancon argued should have been approved, despite the minor clerical error in her paperwork. Without both elements of the 'combo card', re-entry into the US is not guaranteed. Ms Besancon slammed the decision not to release the mum immediately. 'Not only was she denied that right, but agents lied to her stating they had already requested it and she was denied. It was later confirmed that was a lie and no parole was filed or requested on her behalf,' she said. According to US Customs and Border Protection, a person without this documentation may be 'found inadmissable' and therefore deported, 'their applications may be denied and they may face abandonment of their pending application'. Ms Shaw's father, Rod Price, told Radio New Zealand that his daughter was shocked to be detained and managed to ring him before she 'locked up'. 'She went to go back across into the US and then I got a frantic call to say that she's being detained and 'they're about to take my phone off me' and 'they're locking me up for the night',' he said. Ms Besancon told her friend's experience is proof that the US has 'increasingly aggressive' attitudes towards immigration. 'I would strongly caution anyone outside of America from travelling and crossing borders right now,' she said. 'The state of our country and its attitude towards immigration is becoming increasingly aggressive. Due to our current administration, I personally feel there has been a large emboldening of racist communities within the United States. 'I love my country, but my country was built on immigration. I absolutely support those who want to come to our country to work and establish a life here. That is how America was founded and I believe that's how it should continue.'

Search underway for four women feared washed off rocks at Lake Macquarie

Emergency services have launched an air and sea search after a group of women reportedly became stranded on rocks at Lake Macquarie on Saturday. Police were called to the area about 1.40pm, after witnesses saw four females on rocks south of Catherine Hill Bay Beach around 1pm, before the rising tide obscured them from view. Local officers, the Marine Area Command and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter have been scouring the area but have not located the group. It is unclear if the women managed to reach safety. One of the females was reportedly wearing red shorts. Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.

WA's Bhutanese community unites in South West to look for missing man Tashi Dewa

The family of missing 26-year-old Tashi Dewa is pleading for any information as to his whereabouts, as more than 100 people from the Bhutanese community congregate in Western Australia's South West region to help search. Police and State Emergency Service (SES) are at Wellington Dam searching for Mr Dewa, with officers out on foot and using drones to search over the water. Mr Dewa was last seen about 7am Tuesday when he left his home on Frankel Street in Carey Park, riding a grey mountain bike. Mr Dewa moved to WA from Bhutan — a small Asian nation east of Nepal — a few years ago to study. His older brother Kezang Dorji said members of WA's Bhutanese community had travelled from Perth and Margaret River, dropping everything to assist in the search. "Some have been coming from Busselton, and today a big group of people have come from Perth," Mr Dorji said. "All the leads that we've got have been mostly through the support of our community." The president of the Association of Bhutanese in Perth put a call out for help to his community via TikTok, resulting in a groundswell of support. There have been reports of possible sightings in Dardanup, Ferguson, Wellington Dam and Collie. Mr Dewa may also still be in the Bunbury area. Mr Dewa's family is asking people in the area to check their yards, sheds, parks and CCTV footage, and spread the word. Mr Dorji said Mr Dewa had been dealing with depression as a result of historic health issues, which he felt had affected his cognitive abilities. Mr Dewa had sent a message to a family member, asking them not to look for him, according to Mr Dorji. Bunbury Acting Inspector Jeramy Davies said Mr Dewa was last seen by members of the public yesterday in the vicinity of Dardanup. "He's ridden a significant distance, approximately 42 kilometres at this stage, and he could have ridden further," Sergeant Davies said. "We're working very closely with the family and with the Bhutanese community, who have really gathered around this. "This is out of character. We don't know what he's thinking, and we're concerned with what he has in his possession, as in food and drink." Mr Dewa was last seen wearing black sandals, black shorts and a black long-sleeved jacket and carrying a black backpack. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police on 131 444.
