Employees' body seeks AICTE probe into ‘irregularities' in some engineering colleges in A.P.

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Technical and Professional Institutions Employees Association (APTPIEA) have urged the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to look into 'gross irregularities' resorted to by some of the private deemed to be universities in the State.
In a letter addressed to the AICTE Chairman T.G. Sitharam on Thursday (May 29), the association president M.V. Bramhananda Reddy alleged that some institutions were resorting to practices that compromised the integrity and quality of technical education.
They alleged that certain universities offered online and distance learning programmes without proper regulatory approval or in a manner that violated the University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE norms. Accusing them of manipulating student attendance, internal assessments and backdate registrations to produce dishonest academic outcomes, Mr. Reddy said some institutions claimed inflated placement statistics and misled stakeholders, hiding the actual employment status of their graduates. They often imposed hidden charges under various heads, thrusting a huge financial burden on students, he alleged.
The association leader said many Ph.D. candidates had reported lack of proper guidelines, alleged unethical publication practices and delay in the evaluation of their thesis, undermining the spirit of quality research.
The association leader urged the AICTE to probe the academic credibility of such institutions and take appropriate action against those found violating the rulebook.
The association leaders have also alleged irregularities in the inspection procedures in engineering colleges affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)-Kakinada.
They said it had come to their notice that a college principal held a fake Ph.D and continues to be shown as an M. Tech student in regular stream from the same college. The members said the college also did not have sufficient ratified faculty as per the requirement.
Accusing irregularities in allocation of Ph.D guides and in grant of autonomous status to colleges without following due diligence, they demanded that the authorities concerned conduct a re-inspection of the colleges that were granted autonomy under JNTU-Kakinada.

AVIC Chengdu to Beijing Navigation Control - Chinese defence stocks volatile amid fading India-Pakistan tensions

Chinese defence stocks witnessed heightened activity on Tuesday, tracking gains in the broader China stock market. Shares of AVIC Chengdu Aircraft, the manufacturer of the J-10 fighter jets, were particularly in focus amid the recent military conflict between India and Pakistan. The Hang Seng China A Aerospace & Defence Index surged 13% over just six trading sessions — from April 13 to May 12 — coinciding with the onset of the India-Pakistan conflict in early May. The rally was driven by expectations of increased Chinese arms exports to Pakistan as tensions escalated. However, the rally lost steam following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between the two nations, which helped ease fears of a prolonged conflict. Subsequently, the index declined nearly 8% over the next 12 sessions until May 28. In a sign of renewed buying interest, the index of the Chinese defence stocks has since gained over 4% in the last three trading sessions. Hang Seng China A Aerospace & Defence Index is still down 5% from May 12 high. Several constituent stocks of the index, including Tellhow Sci-Tech, Beijing Navigation Control, Jiangsu Maixinlin Aviation Science and Technology, Tianqin Equipment, and Beijing Hengyu Datacom Aviation Equipment Co, have declined between 5% and 10% over the past month. AVIC Chengdu Aircraft, the manufacturer of the J-10 fighter jets used by Pakistan, remained in the spotlight during the peak of the India-Pakistan conflict. However, the bullish momentum in the stock has since faded. AVIC Chengdu share price has plummeted over 20% from their May peak, falling from a high of 95.86 yuan on May 12 to a low of 76.70 yuan in just 15 sessions. The decline in AVIC Chengdu Aircraft share price was exacerbated after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly questioned Pakistan's claims that Chinese-made fighter jets were responsible for the destruction of the Indian Air Force's Adampur airbase. Investor sentiment on Chinese Defence stocks also turned cautious following the successful completion of India's Operation Sindoor, which showcased India's military capabilities. Additionally, the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan has reduced the urgency and potential for immediate defence procurement, further dampening interest in Chinese defence counters. Engineering seat matrix in two weeks; over 100 colleges seek intake revisions

'Some institutions want to boost intake in high-demand branches, while others aim to reduce or discontinue courses with poor enrolment,' the official explained. 'We cannot proceed without AICTE approval, which is why we are releasing a draft first. Once objections are received, we will assess whether proposed changes align with AICTE approvals and state policies.' A major point under review is whether to freeze the CSE seat intake. Despite the branch remaining highly popular among students, officials are concerned about a potential oversupply of graduates, particularly from private colleges. This oversaturation is believed to be affecting both employability and academic quality. CET counselling to follow NEET results and final seat matrix Addressing concerns about delays in Common Entrance Test (CET) counselling, the official confirmed that the postponement is intentional. 'Many students appear for both CET and NEET-UG. If CET counselling begins before NEET results are out, students will lack crucial information and this can lead to unnecessary seat blocking,' the official said. CET counselling will begin after the finalisation of the engineering seat matrix and the announcement of NEET-UG results, ensuring students can make well-informed decisions about their academic future.

Newly formed taluks will get Praja Soudhas as government-sanctioned administrative approvals

With Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handing over the administrative approval letter to the Deputy Commissioner, Yadgir, the long-pending demand of the people of newly formed taluks to have a taluk administrative building is likely to be fulfilled in a year. Mr. Siddaramaiah handed over the letter to B. Susheela, Deputy Commissioner, after new taluks got administrative approval during the recent meeting held at Bengaluru. Yadgir district had three taluks — Yadgir, Shahapur and Shorapur (Surpur) then. But these taluks were divided when Chief Minister Jagadish Shetter announced it in 2013, as Gurmitkal divided from Yadgir, Wadagera from Shahapur and Hunsagi from Shorapur, respectively. Despite the announcement, new taluks weren't provided the taluk administrative buildings even after many years. Therefore, it was forced to function with the locally available government buildings. But, lack of sufficient space for administration, the officers and general public as well faced difficulties, more particularly in summer. Considering the necessity, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had promised to construct new taluk administrative buildings and named them 'Praja Soudha' and approved the proposal during the cabinet meeting held at Kalaburagi in September last year. After necessary formalities, taluks have finally got the administrative approval for the construction of Praja Soudhas in each taluk at a cost of ₹ 8.60 crore in two phases. Both Wadagera and Hunsagi taluks were represented by Congress MLAs Channareddy Patil Tunnur and Raja Venugopal Naik, while Gurmitkal was represented by JD(S) MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur. It is learnt that all MLAs have put their hands together for Praja Soudhas get administrative approval. 'The Chief Minister has shown special concern to build administrative buildings in the newly formed taluks, as they were much needed for the smooth functioning of daily activities and public convenience. The new Praja Soudha buildings will have all basic facilities and other requirements as people wanted,' Mr. Tunnur reacted. 'The Yadgir district has remained backward with a lack of civic facilities and government buildings. The government should establish other required buildings, including courts, for taluks for overall development,' Sharanu Gadduge, a pro-Kannada activist, has urged.
