Lucas Ribeiro walks out of Sundowns: Qatari club close in

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has rocked Mamelodi Sundowns by abruptly exiting their pre-season camp in Rustenburg on Saturday, as transfer negotiations reach boiling point.
The Brazilian attacker, tipped as a leading contender for the Footballer of the Year award, requested to leave the camp just days after joining up with the squad, a move that strongly hints at an imminent transfer.
Masandawana are currently sharpening their preparations at Royal Marang ahead of the 2025/2026 season, which kicks off this Sunday evening with a blockbuster MTN8 quarter-final against Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
But all eyes have now turned to Ribeiro's future after his unexpected departure.
Since arriving in June 2023, Ribeiro has proven indispensable to Sundowns. His electric form delivered 25 goal contributions in 51 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club's historic eighth straight league title triumph.
Following their FIFA Club World Cup journey, the Brazilian rejoined training on 21 July. And linked up with the squad at Chloorkop before heading to Rustenburg. But within days, he asked to leave, fuelling speculation about his next destination.
While top clubs from France, Belgium, and Brazil, including Fluminense, have shown serious interest. Fresh reports from the Middle East have thrown a twist in the tale.
'Qatar Sports Club reportedly began negotiations in early July for the signature of Lucas Ribeiro,' claim sources close to the matter.
Latest developments suggest the Qatari outfit is on the brink of sealing a deal for the 26-year-old winger.
Sundowns have not officially confirmed Ribeiro's departure. But their decision to allow him to leave the camp signals that the club may already be planning for life without him.
His availability for Sunday's high-stakes encounter now hangs in the balance. With his sudden absence leaving supporters and analysts reading between the lines.
'Sundowns granted Ribeiro leave from the camp,' a source close to the club confirmed, further fuelling transfer speculation.
Where will Lucas Ribeiro land, Fluminense or Qatar SC?

Mamelodi Sundowns news: Cardoso and Rayners

Mamelodi Sundowns shocked the continent in November 2024. The Portuguese Miguel Cardoso replaced former coach Manqoba Mngqithi. The former Esperance mentor had to hit the ground running — not only to deliver results, but also to maintain the Sundowns' traditional shoeshine and piano style of football. Despite winning the Betway Premiership and making the CAF Champions League final, Cardoso's critics feel his football is too pragmatic and direct for Kabo Yellow. 'In the beginning, people were saying, 'Ah, maybe coach Miguel's style is not exactly Sundowns' style'. That's absolutely wrong,' Cardoso said…Full story here. Image: FIFA After making the move to Sundowns from Stellenbosch in August 2024, the striker quickly silenced any doubts about his ability to perform at one of South Africa's supremos. The Mitchells Plain-born star hit the ground running, scoring on debut in a continental qualifier and following that up with crucial goals in both domestic and Champions League fixtures. By midseason, Rayners had already registered double figures in goals and was consistently involved in build-up play and assists… Full story here. Phili strikes late as Stellenbosch edge AmaZulu in extra-time thriller

Langelihle Phili of Stellenbosch celebrate after scoring his extra-time goal against AmaZulu at Cape Town Stadium on Sunday in the MTN8 quarter-finals. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Langelihle Phili came off the bench to haunt his former club and seal Stellenbosch's place in the MTN8 semi-finals with a 3-2 extra-time victory over AmaZulu at the DHL Stadium on Sunday. The 20-year-old winger, a product of the Usuthu academy, emerged as the hero deep into extra-time after the tie had finished 2-2 in regulation. With both sides locked in an intense back-and-forth battle, it was Phili's powerful finish in the 108th minute that proved decisive. AmaZulu, featuring several new faces after a squad overhaul, struck first through debutant Keagan Allen in the 19th minute. The former Moroka Swallows centre-back capitalised on a lapse in concentration from the hosts, staying alert after a set-piece. A clever pass from defensive partner Sandile Mthethwa found Allen unmarked, and he bundled the ball past Sage Stephens to open his account. Video Player is loading. Just seven minutes later, Bafana Bafana winger Devin Titus broke down the right and showed excellent composure to square for Sanele Barns, who tapped in from close range to level matters. The match had all the ingredients of a true MTN8 clash — edge, energy, and end-to-end transitions. Usuthu, under Arthur Zwane, handed starts to two new signings in Allen and Ryan Moon. But their plans were disrupted midway through the first half when goalkeeper Richard Ofori was stretchered off following a collision with Barns. Despite dominating possession, Stellies struggled to find the cutting edge in the opening stanza. Steve Barker's men repeatedly breached the final third but lacked execution to convert their territorial advantage into goals. In the second half, AmaZulu upped their tempo and wrestled more control in midfield. However, that resistance cracked in the 69th minute. Barns, a persistent menace throughout, completed his brace in style. This time, he struck from a free kick, curling the ball beautifully around the wall and past substitute goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela. Just four minutes later, AmaZulu equalised again — this time through 22-year-old academy graduate Tebogo Mashigo. The young attacker showed great awareness inside the box, latching onto a loose ball before firing a deflected effort that looped over Stephens to make it 2-2. Stellenbosch pushed for a late winner in regulation, but AmaZulu held firm, forcing the game into extra time. With tired legs and both teams showing signs of fatigue, it was always going to take a moment of individual brilliance or composure to separate the sides — and Phili delivered exactly that. The winger, introduced late in the second half, found himself in space and fired a riproaring shot to beat Mzimela and send the home crowd into celebration. Stellenbosch now join Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United in the last four of the MTN8, with the final quarter-final tie set to determine the last semi-finalist. For Usuthu, it's a bitter blow — but signs of promise under Zwane remain. SCORES Stellenbosch FC (1) 3 Barns 26, 69, Phili 108 AmaZulu FC (1) 2 Allen 19, Mashigo 73

Mammoth MTN8 task today for Richards Bay FC

NRB fans will have their eyes glued to their TV screens today as the Rich Boyz take on the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 quarter final at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, at 6pm. Only the biggest optimists – and fanatical NRB supporters – give Richards Bay any chance of winning; but cup games are made for upsets and this might be another one of those. The encounter will be screened live on SuperSport channel 202. Meanwhile, Richards Bay have announced a venue change for their opening 2025/26 Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants on Saturday, 9 August. Five tough KZN Premier's Cup games contested over two rain-sodden days last weekend did significant damage to the uMhlathuze Stadium playing surface, necessitating a change of venue to allow sufficient time for remedial action to be completed. Due to have been the Rich Boyz' triumphant return to the newly revamped uMhlathuze Stadium after it was condemned by the PSL in September 2021, the decision has been taken to shift the game to the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi – where the NRB side has played its home fixtures over the past four seasons.
