Limpopo police confirm inquest after US millionaire killed by buffalo
This was confirmed to Caxton Network News by Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the spokesperson for the Limpopo police.
Hans Vermaak of Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS) said in a statement earlier that Watkins was killed in an 'unprovoked attack by an unwounded' Cape buffalo that he was tracking. He said they are co-operating with 'relevant authorities to ensure all procedures are followed'.
Asher, in his 50s, was a millionaire from Dallas, Texas, who reportedly believed in hunting as a powerful conservation tool.
He was a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group – a real estate marketing firm dedicated to the sale of ranches, land and recreational properties.
'We can confirm that SAPS Makhado are investigating an inquest following the untimely death… The incident happened on Sunday [around] 13:00 on [a] farm along [the] N1 to Musina,' Ledwaba said.
Ledwaba said that the security personnel at the farm – along the N1 to Musina – took police officers to the scene. 'They were shown a lifeless body of a man already certified dead inside an ambulance. [The] deceased [had] injuries on the stomach and the side of the ribs.'
Vermaak's statement said: 'Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo he was tracking, together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers.'
Ledwaba said the buffalo was found lying dead nearby, with a bullet wound. 'Police investigations are continuing,' he concluded.
Caxton Network News contacted CVS to ask if the buffalo was shot after Watkins' death, but was told the company would not make any statements other than what was said in the initial statement. CVS reiterated that the buffalo was not wounded when it was being tracked by the hunting party.
'While we understand the media and public's interest in this matter, we trust that you will appreciate that our priority at this time is with the family of the deceased and all individuals directly affected by this tragic event.'
CVS said it does not intend to publicly share any specific details regarding the event.
'This decision has been made out of respect for the family's privacy and in recognition of the sensitive and traumatic nature of the situation. In our view, sharing further specifics would not serve to add any value and may only contribute to further distress for those directly involved.'

NO more cans of coke: JMPD denies daily traffic fine quota
An alleged traffic fine quota in Gauteng is making headlines for all the wrong reasons this week. With AARTO points-based demerits starting countrywide on 1 December 2025, the JMPD has denied its officers have a strict daily traffic fine quota to maintain. The claim originates from the Democratic Alliance's (DA's) Michael Sun. He alleges that JMPD officers are under immense pressure to meet a certain targets, reports TopAuto . Typical road-side fines average R1 000, so this would entail producing roughly one fine per hour on a shift. Attaining the daily targets leads to additional overtime payments, claim's Sun. Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) is not happy hearing of an alleged traffic fine quota. It maintains traffic officers should focus on bylaw enforcement, traffic management and crime prevention rather than incentivising income generation. Many of these, at major intersections, are being labelled 'roadside checks' to avoid various SAPS legal requirements. As such, the DA has called on Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to intervene. It says the province should prioritise public safety and remove any revenue-based quotas from the JMPD. In turn, the city denies any such allegations. Spokesperson Xolani Fihla reiterates that fines are issued based on observed infractions, and not to fulfil any sort of traffic fine quota. 'Performance of JMPD officers is assessed based on overall effectiveness in improving community safety. There is no evaluation based on a revenue generated from fines. Video: Manhunt for fugitive after Roodepoort cops killed in CBD
Police are urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of Zimbabwean national Jabulani Moyo after a fatal shooting of two police officers in the Roodepoort CBD this morning. According to Roodepoort Record, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who is believed to have shot and killed the officers while they were transporting him back to prison from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court after he appeared in connection with a 2023 business robbery. Roodepoort Record earlier reported that, according to Masondo, one of the officers was based at Roodepoort Police Station and the other at Florida, and that they collected the suspect from a prison in Boksburg. 'The two police officers, a sergeant and a warrant officer, were shot at and disarmed. The sergeant was certified dead on the crime scene, while the warrant officer was taken to hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival. 'Moyo was seen driving the police vehicle that was later found abandoned a few kilometres from the crime scene.' Police are appealing to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation or help in the apprehension of the suspect to contact the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
