Old military graduation clip falsely linked to controversial Indonesia 'sea fence'

Yahoo17-02-2025

"Kopaska elite force chanting before they dismantled the PIK 2 sea fence," read part of an Indonesian-language Facebook post on January 23, 2025, referring to the Indonesian navy's underwater demolition unit Kopaska.
The post -- which included a video of soldiers on a beach chanting while holding up their rifles -- surfaced after the Indonesian navy started taking down a controversial "sea fence" in a coastal area in Tangerang regency called Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) (archived link).
Local media reported the lengthy 30-kilometre (18-mile) wooden structure sparked outrage among fishermen in the area as it blocked their access to the sea (archived link).
It remained unclear who built the "sea fence" or owns the structure, with President Prabowo Subianto ordering a probe on January 20 (archived link).
Text overlaid to the video describes the structure as a "gift of gratitude" of former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to known supporter business tycoon Sugianto Kusuma, popularly known as Aguan.
One of Aguan's companies told Indonesian media it holds building rights certificates in the area but denied putting up the "sea fence" (archived link).
Jokowi said he supports an investigation on the legality of the construction of the structure, Tempo newspaper reported (archived link).
The video has also been shared alongside similar claims on Facebook and SnackVideo but it is unrelated to the recent controversy.
A reverse image search of the clip's keyframes on Google found a longer version posted on TikTok on September 27, 2024 (archived link).
"Cheer up first to light up the spirit," its caption read.
At the 4:33 mark of the TikTok video, a banner can be seen with the message: "The closing ceremony of Yudha Wastu Pramuka and the beret ceremony of infantry students 2024."
"Yudha Wastu Pramuka" is the motto of the Indonesian infantry corps in Sanskrit.
AFP reached out to the TikTok user who posted the video who said it shows a military graduation ceremony on September 22, 2024.
Subsequent keyword searches found a post published on the official Instagram account of the regional military regiment in the capital Jakarta on the same day about the event (archived link).
The same banner in the TikTok video can be seen in some of the photos included in the Instagram post.

Popular Hokkien mee The Neighbourwok opens new central outlet

If you're a Hokkien mee aficionado, chances are you've heard of The Neighbourwok — a cult-favourite HKM stall tucked away in a nondescript kopitiam in Bukit Batok. It's my absolute fav, so you can imagine my excitement when I found out The Neighbourwok recently opened their second outlet at Owen Road! The Neighbourwok first teased their expansion on Instagram in May, hinting at a new outlet in the 'central area' of SG. After keeping fans in suspense, they finally revealed the big news — their second stall officially opened on 7 Jun at 44 Owen Road. The menu offered at said new outlet is identical to the original in Bukit Batok, minus their satay. The one item on the menu — Fried Hokkien Prawn (duh) — is priced the same at S$5/S$6/S$8. To dabao is an additional S$0.30. If this is your first introduction to the stall, I'm honoured to be the one to let you in on this HKM gem. It ticks all the boxes of a good Hokkien mee — smoky wok hei that doesn't overpower the dish, fresh and crispy pork lard, finished off with a punchy chilli on the side. I must say, The Neighbourwok's HKM is on the wetter side, where the yellow noodles and thick bee hoon combo are submerged in a rich prawn zhup. Naturally, some diners will have their reservations about stalls expanding, fearing that the quality may not hold up at new outlets. A netizen on Facebook had compared both outlets, stating that the Bukit Batok outlet 'doesn't have a strong eggy taste' while the chef at Owen Road 'is more generous with eggs'. Ultimately, Hokkien mee is a very subjective dish, so take others' reviews (including mine) with a grain of salt. I'll continue singing praises about The Neigbourwok, though. Personally, I'd still patronise the OG outlet as it's nearer to me, but you can no longer use the excuse of 'not wanting to travel to the West' to try The Neighbourwok's Hokkien mee! 20 best Hokkien prawn mee stalls in SG for the avid Singaporean foodie [Nov 2024 update] The post Popular Hokkien mee The Neighbourwok opens new central outlet appeared first on

Man Takes Labrador Puppy Out for Socialization—But There's Just One Problem

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Socialization is an important step in dog training, but one owner's idea for socializing didn't quite turn out as expected. Socializing a puppy during the dog's first few months helps set them up for success. It exposes them to different sights, sounds, smells, people and other animals. Those with inadequate socialization early in life often develop behavioral problems, Newsweek previously reported. Owners often bring their puppies with them to restaurants and stores for socializing, which is what TikTok user @jimmy_thelab did with his black Labrador puppy named Jimmy. He placed Jimmy in the shopping cart as he strolled down the aisles of the hardware store. The hope was that Jimmy took in the views, sights and sounds from around the store, but instead, Jimmy only looked at his owner. The pup didn't care about anyone else around. He kept his focus right on the owner, staring up at him with the big, bright puppy-dog eyes. Impossible to ignore that precious face, the owner stopped pushing the cart and reached his hand out to pet Jimmy's face. The pup happily accepted the love, as it was the only thing he wanted since being brought into the store. "He's honestly so chill," the owner told Newsweek via TikTok. "He has a look around at the start, but most of the time he just wants to be close to us. It's so sweet it melts me." This owner's method of socialization has taken Jimmy to other locations, including several trips to the pet store, a photo studio for a photo shoot and visits with Grandma. And yet, with all that exposure, the pup still can't lose sight of his owner. Screenshots from a June 10 TikTok video of a black Lab puppy staring at his owner while at the store. "You're his safe place. That's why he's looking at you," commented a viewer, while another echoed: "He's looking at his world." Commenting on what the pup was thinking, someone wrote: "Yeah, this place is cool and all, but you're way cooler." A fourth person asked: "How did you get any shopping done? I would've been crashing into things left and right. My focus would be on the goodest boy." But the owner did confirm he was crashing into everything.
