'Sinners' just arrived on Max — celebrate July 4 by streaming the best movie of the year

Tom's Guide04-07-2025
"Sinners" is finally streaming on Max, and it's the perfect way to enjoy the long July 4 weekend.
Yes, you can (incredibly) still go and see Ryan Coogler's vampire horror movie in theaters. I certainly won't judge you if you do, as I think this movie benefits from being seen on the biggest screen possible — with the loudest sound system possible too.
But if you don't want to brave the heat or traffic to get to your local cinema, or you don't want to pay $15-$20 for a movie ticket, it's okay. Just enjoy your beers and brats, then boot up Max on your TV at home and hit play on "Sinners."
"Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan as identical twins Elijah ("Smoke") and Elias ("Stack") Moore. Known as the Smokestack Twins, these two spent years away from home, fighting in World War I and then joining Al Capone's Chicago Outfit after returning to the U.S. from Europe.
But now they're back in their Mississippi Delta hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi and they're men on a mission — to start a juke joint for the local Black community
From Chicago, they've brought a literal truckful of booze, and they've bought a nearby abandoned sawmill from a racist landlord. They've even recruited their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a blues performer who goes by the name of "Preacher Boy," and a few other local musicians to perform at the juke joint's opening night.
Sammie's music is transcendent, and the night looks to be a success. But his incredible music catches the ear of more than just the juke joint's patrons when a band of vampires arrive at the door.

"Sinners" has been a hit in every sense of the word. It's the third biggest movie at the U.S. box office this year. It's got a 97% "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience rating isn't far behind at 96%.
We haven't said a negative word about it here at Tom's Guide, either. Senior Streaming Writer Alix Blackburn declared it her "favorite movie of 2025 so far," and I declared it "'From Dusk Till Dawn' — only much better."
Just about everything in this movie works. The sound is incredible, as is the original music. Michael B. Jordan is incredible as both Smoke and Stack and what could have easily been derided as a gimmick instead becomes a brilliant casting choice by Coogler.
So this July 4 weekend, go watch "Sinners." Go to a theater, buy or rent from Amazon or Apple or stream it on Max, which, if you don't have it already, is our pick for the best streaming service out there. If you're deaf, there's a version of "Sinners" in Black American Sign Language on Max that will allow you to watch it too.
Heck, you can even watch it on HBO on cable or satellite on Saturday, July 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Just whatever you do, watch "Sinners."

TV Review: NAUTILUS Season 1 Finale, ‘Too Big to Fail'

Nautilus Season 1 comes to a fascinating conclusion with 'Too Big to Fail.' I've mentioned several times that the show has leaned into tropes and cliches. But the finale takes an unpredictable turn. And then another, and another. Throw a couple of twists in, and Nautilus ensures viewers get a memorable finale. Nautilus Season 1 Finale, 'Too Big to Fail' The Nautilus crew has reached London. Their mission: to take down the East India Mercantile Company. The how is the exciting part. The writers come up with a clever ruse for the crew to attempt their mission. RELATED: Read our review of the previous Nautilus episode, 'Ride of the Valkyrie' There's a little bit of everything in the Nautilus Season 1 finale. There's subterfuge, a heist, action, romance, betrayal, comedy, and heart. 'Too Big to Fail' has epic showdowns and comeuppances, but not in the way you think. As I said, for the first time, Nautilus decides to be unpredictable at nearly every turn, and it still works. I worry that I've been gushing over this show, but I'm stunned by how well Nautilus balances the humor and darkness, especially in the finale when so much is at stake. And throughout, the characters shine. There's even a Company character whose arc left me speechless. This Isn't the End, Hopefully Several plot threads are tied up in the Nautilus Season 1 finale, but new ones also emerge to keep viewers wanting more. But the question is, will we get another season? I'd like to think positive reviews like mine are keeping the love for Nautilus alive, but its Rotten Tomatoes score isn't sensational. And there's little to no organic discourse around this show. RELATED: SDCC 2025: Anne Rice Immortal Universe Panel Unveils Dark Delights for The Vampire Lestat and Talamasca Nautilus is hardly prestige TV, but it's an immersive ride. The story beats may seem familiar, but they're told with so much heart. The show is buoyed by its quirky characters, with a cast that doesn't look like every other show on our screens. Most importantly, Nautilus is so much more than an adventure show – its key theme of triumphing over injustice will resonate with everyone. The events of the finale will leave viewers satisfied, but also excited for where else the story can go. RELATED: Read our Nautilus reviews Would I sit down and watch a Season 2? 100 percent yes. Bring it on. If for no other reason than to see such a varied and diverse cast getting to exercise their acting chops in a genre production. Time to sail away to another season. Hopefully. Eddie Murphy Says Turning Down 'Rush Hour' for ‘Holy Man' Was a ‘No-Brainer'

Hindsight is 20/20. Eddie Murphy is among the many Hollywood stars who have passed on a role that they regret until this day. In an interview with Speedy Morman on 360 with Speedy, Murphy spoke about choosing Holy Man over the role of Detective James Carter, which ultimately went to Chris Tucker. "They came to me, and they was like, it was two scripts," he recalled. "It was like, 'It's Rush Hour, and it's going to be [an] action comedy, and you're gonna be [with] Jackie Chan. And it's action, summertime, running, and all this physical stuff." "And this other one was, 'You in a robe in Miami.' I was like, hey, hey, hey," Murphy continued, referencing his role in Holy Man. "It was a no-brainer! And we went to Miami, and made a horrendous film." COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. The 64-year-old actor and comedian almost immediately walked back calling Holy Man "horrendous." The 1998 movie currently has a 12 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so he may be onto something. Murphy also confessed to turning down the role of Hoke Colburn in Driving Miss Daisy, which earned Morgan Freeman an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Even though the part was initially developed for him, Eddie was adamant that he "wasn't doing no s**tlike that." Murphy confirmed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he turned down Ghostbusters in favor of Beverly Hills Cop, and passed on Who Framed Roger Rabbit because he did not believe in the idea of pairing animation with actual people. Hailee Steinfeld Reveals One of the Stylish Looks She Wore During Her Honeymoon With Josh Allen

Hailee Steinfeld is not gatekeeping her gorgeous looks! In the Friday, August 15, edition of her Beau Society email newsletter, the Sinners actress, 28, focused on the topic of bathing suits and interviewed model Devon Windsor. Steinfeld revealed she rocked multiple items from Windsor's swimwear line during her wedding festivities. 'For my honeymoon in Hawaii this past June, I packed a few of my tried-and-true suits, but also invested in some new pieces — including a set from Devon Windsor Swim that I love!' the Dickinson alum told readers. 'I recently bought the Lilah bikini top, Lio bottom, and matching Leena skirt, and I'm obsessed!' she gushed. 'I wore the set throughout my bachelorette, wedding weekend, and honeymoon.' All three pieces that Steinfeld named are currently available for purchase on Windsor's website. As Star previously reported, The Edge of Seventeen actress tied the knot with NFL star Josh Allen on May 31 at San Ysidro Ranch in California. Steinfeld said her 'exquisite' Tamara Ralph wedding dress left the Buffalo Bills quarterback, 29, 'stunned' in a July edition of her newsletter, according to People. Allen shared a glimpse at the couple's honeymoon in June, posting multiple polaroids on Instagram showing him and Steinfeld seemingly soaking up the sun in Hawaii as newlyweds. 'Wifey ❤️,' he captioned the sweet post. Solve the daily Crossword
