LS extends ‘One Nation, One Election' JPC deadline
The motion was moved by PP Chaudhary, Chairman of the One Nation, One Election Panel. He urged the House
to grant the JPC additional time to finalise and present its report on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The bill was first introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2024 and subsequently referred to the Joint Committee of both Houses for detailed examination.

Reflections on August 15 On Independence Day, I wonder whether we are truly free. We broke the chains of colonialism, yet we forged new ones: corruption that has seeped into the system making it rotten; injustice that spares the powerful; the divisions of caste and religion, and the silent suffering of the poor. Women still fight for safety and millions still sleep hungry. Our freedom fighters dreamed of dignity, equality and unity but speeches and parades cannot hide how far we are from that dream. True independence will come to us only when justice is swift, opportunities are equal, and no Indian lives in fear. Until then, August 15 is not just a celebration. It is a reminder that the fight for real freedom is not over. Last year when I was travelling in western Europe, I did not spot a single stray dog on any street. In Switzerland, most people have pet dogs and great care is taken to ensure that no one is disturbed when the pet travels with the owner on public transportation systems such as trams, trains and buses. We have much to learn from the West. It is ironic that the demand of the conservancy workers for permanency has not been considered by the ruling DMK government despite this being a part of its election promise. The authorities cannot ask the workers, who have been directly engaged by the Corporation, to go and work under contractors. The Supreme Court, as early as 1985, in the Food Corporation case, made it clear that the march of law is from contract labour to direct labour and not the other way. The Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970 was meant for regulating and ultimately abolishing contract labour. Courts and politicians keep saying that the Constitution is a living instrument meant for emancipating the weaker sections. But not only are promises not kept, they are being forgotten. N.G.R. Can't ignore Pahalgam while deciding on J&K statehood: Supreme court
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Thursday sought the Centre's response to a petition seeking restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir, but said such a decision could not be taken without considering prevailing gro-und situation and incidents like Pahalgam, where terrorists had killed 26 people in cold blood on April 22. Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, said that the judgment of SC's 5-judge bench led by then CJI and comprising current CJI B R Gavani had on December 11, 2023, upheld the Centre's decision to scrap Article 370 that gave special status to J&K and the bifurcation of the state into two UTs - J&K and Ladakh on the basis of SG Tushar Mehta'a categorical "restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible" assurance. After more than one and half years, statehood had not been restored, Sankaranarayan said. Mehta said elections to the assembly of J&K had been held, as was promised in 2023 to the apex court. "SC is aware of the peculiar situation prevailing in J&K. Several aspects have to be taken into consideration before a decision on granting statehood to J&K can be taken. "One has to take into consideration the ground realities prevailing in J&K. The Pahalgam incident cannot be ignored," the bench said, and asked the Centre to file its response to the statehood demand in eight weeks. In the Dec 2023 judgment, the five-judge bench had recorded: "The solicitor general stated that the statehood of Jammu & Kashmir will be restored (except for the carving out of Union Territory of Ladakh). In view of the statement we do not find it necessary to determine whether the reorganisation of the State of Jammu & Kashmir into two Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir is permissible under Article 3 of the Constitution. " "However, we uphold the validity of the decision to carve out the Union Territory of Ladakh in view of Article 3(a) read with Explanation I which permits forming a Union Territory by separation of a territory from any state. We direct that steps shall be taken by Election Commission of India to conduct elections to the legislative assembly of Jammu & Kashmir constituted under Section 14 of the Reorganisation Act by 30 September 2024. Cong holds Vote Satyagraha Tiranga Yatra in Gwalior against alleged mandate theft
Bhopal: State Congress on Thursday organised a Vote Satyagraha Tiranga Yatra in Gwalior which was led by state in-charge Harish Chaudhary, PCC chief Jitu Patwari, LOP Umang Singhar and senior party functionaries Sunil Sharma, MLAs Pankaj Upadhyay, Sahab Singh Gurjar, Suresh Raje, Gwalior (city) district president Devendra Sharma, former MLA Praveen Pathak and others. Speaking to reporters, state party in-charge Chaudhary said: "Today, it is our biggest responsibility to stop the attacks on the democratic system of the country and to save the sanctity of the right to vote. The vote theft being done by the BJP is an attempt to weaken the roots of democracy, and the Congress will fight it strongly." The Congress party is taking out protest marches and demonstrations across the state to protest vote-theft which was alleged by Lok Sabha LOP Rahul Gandhi last week. The Congress claimed that during the 2024 Parliamentary elections, one assembly constituency within a Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka had more than a lakh fake voters. LOP Singhar said: "Our pride is our tricolor. This struggle against the conspiracy of vote-theft in the country is not just for votes, but to save the soul of the country." Patwari said: "Today, by participating in Vote Satyagraha Tiranga Yatra in Gwalior, we have raised our voice for democratic justice and constitutional rights. Those responsible for vote theft will be brought to the dock. The provision of 'one person, one vote' is necessary for a healthy and prosperous democracy, but the BJP has committed the organised crime of vote theft by insulting democracy." He argued that the Vote Satyagraha Tiranga Yatra is being organised to give a clear message from Gwalior that the Congress party will continue to struggle on every front to protect democracy and maintain the sanctity of voting rights.
