Shemar Stewart's agent goes public about Bengals contract standoff

USA Today10 hours ago

The Cincinnati Bengals are closing in on Shemar Stewart being the only unsigned first-round pick in the NFL.
Updates on the contract standoff over the team attempting to insert new language in regards to voiding guarantees continue to trickle in, too.
Next up are public comments from Stewart's agent, Zac Hiller.
'Obviously my job, and all agents' job, is to protect the players,' Hiller said on SiriusXM NFL Radio (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk). 'Simply put, Shemar would, of course, love for his contract to be as protective as the rest of his Bengals teammates in the past. And, simply put, the way the contract currently reads is not as protective.'

Hiller added this, per Florio: 'If you want to make changes to your precedent, it should be a negotiation. It should be give and take. It shouldn't just be, 'Hey, we're changing this and sign it or go scratch.''
So, at least from the player's side of things, the Bengals have attempted to change their longstanding contract precedent on this front without any sort of counterbalance to make it work. That, or what they're offering isn't good enough and justifies this very public, messy standoff.
At this point, we're in he said, she said territory. Not that the Bengals say much about anything, really.
What's interesting from Stewart's side is that had he been drafted elsewhere, these language quirks would've likely already been in place and none of this would've happened. Ditto for his choosing, unlike other unsigned rookies, to not participate at all this spring and early summer, before bashing the team in an interview and leaving minicamp early.
Interesting from the Bengals' side, of course, is the sudden desire to change contract precedent and whether or not they're offering enough to make it worth it for Stewart to be the first.
As always, this likely ends in one side blinking and reaching across the aisle to make it work.

Pat McAfee Announces Exciting Aaron Rodgers News on Monday

Pat McAfee Announces Exciting Aaron Rodgers News on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's been an eventful offseason for four-time MVP and former Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers. After parting ways with the New York Jets following two seasons, Rodgers remained out of the spotlight for much of the spring—leaving fans, media, and teams wondering if the 41-year-old would return to the NFL at all. Advertisement That question was answered earlier this month when Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers—long considered the frontrunner to land him if he opted to keep playing. Adding to the headline-making offseason, Rodgers revealed during one of his first interviews as a Steeler that he is now engaged to be married. And the news keeps rolling: On Monday, Rodgers' good friend Pat McAfee and the team at the "Pat McAfee Show" announced that the quarterback will make a live appearance on Tuesday's episode. While Rodgers has been a regular guest during NFL seasons, this will mark just his second time on the show since February. 'We also have some breaking news, A.J.," McAfee said. "Tomorrow on the program—it'll be a Tuesday—and... Aaron Rodgers will be joining us. First time Aaron joins us as a Pittsburgh Steeler. Can't wait to catch up. A lot has happened since the last time we talked to Aaron.' Aaron Rodgers has never been one to reveal too much to the public—and understandably so, given the spotlight he's been under as one of the NFL's premier quarterbacks since becoming the Green Bay Packers' starter in 2008. Advertisement However, one thing he's remained consistent about is his appearances on the "Pat McAfee Show," especially since its debut on ESPN in September 2023. Aaron RodgersCredits to Imagin His ongoing presence on the show is fueled by his close relationship with co-host and former teammate A.J. Hawk, as well as his friendship with McAfee. Now, Rodgers is staying true to that commitment, with a much-anticipated interview scheduled for Tuesday. Jon Rahm Uses Metric System to Hilariously Prank Phil Mickelson Again

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It seems that Jon Rahm has taken a liking to pranking Phil Mickelson. Not long ago, the Spaniard messed with the American's rangefinder, producing hilarious results. Ahead of LIV Golf Virginia, he did it again. The league's official X account posted a video in which Rahm admitted to switching four of Mickelson's rangefinders from yards to meters. As a true American, Mickelson is not a fan of the metric system, so he struggled to see the humor in it. "Did they do the meters thing again?" Lefty said, at least partially annoyed. Rahm initially kept his cool, trying to deflect suspicion by pointing out that he wasn't the only European player there. However, he burst into laughter when influencer Grant Horvat tried a second rangefinder only to discover that it had also been switched. This took place during the preparation of the teams competing in The Duels Virginia, the second edition of the new LIV Golf event involving some of the most renowned golf influencers. Legendary golfer Phil Mickelson played with popular YouTuber Grant Horvat. The two have a long history of playing together and regularly create content as a team, facing off against professional golfers, stars from other sports, and other influencers. It was during one of these collaborations that they played against Jon Rahm, teaming up with NFL superstar Josh Allen. That's when the rangefinder prank involving yards being switched to meters was born. Jon Rahm of Spain (L) and Phil Mickelson of the United States walk across the third hole during a practice round prior to the 125th U.S. OPEN at Oakmont Country Club on June 11, 2025 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. MoreSince it was their first time, it was also [and hilariously] their worst. Not only did Mickelson and Horvat play with the rangefinder showing them incorrect distances for several holes, but they also couldn't figure out how to switch it from meters to yards afterward. It was unforgettable, for sure. Rahm played The Duels with Wesley Bryan, a former PGA Tour pro and popular YouTuber. The other three teams were Sergio Garcia and George Bryan, Bubba Watson and Luke Kwon, and Henrik Stenson and Fat Perez. Rahm and Bryan won the event, defeating Stenson and Perez in a playoff. NFL analyst says he'd rather have Kyren Williams than Christian McCaffrey

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons as one of the best young players both on his team and in the NFL. However, he remains on the fringes of the elite players at his position heading into his fourth NFL season. Williams also enters 2025 seeking a new contract, which he and the Rams have continued to discuss this offseason. But while he may not have produced at the same level as, say, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, NFL Network's Gregg Rosenthal said he'd take Williams over McCaffrey on a recent episode of NFL Daily. "I want to have some love for the consistent player," Rosenthal said of Williams. "He played the most snaps last season — this shocked me — of anyone in the league. ... I'd actually would rather have him than McCaffrey because I'd just rather have a guy I'd know is going to be there even though that I know, at their peaks, McCaffrey is a better player." On its surface, this is a bold take. Only because 2024 was Williams' first full season since he joined the Rams as a fifth-round rookie three years. Before this past year, Williams missed five games in 2023 and seven in 2022. But even more so, Williams has never eclipsed 1,500 scrimmage yards. McCaffrey has done it four times in his eight years. However, McCaffrey has also missed more than 10 games in those four other seasons. Their age differences notwithstanding (Williams will be 25 this year and McCaffrey is 29), they also play the position differently. Williams has never caught more than 34 passes for more than 206 yards in a season, while McCaffrey is a dual-threat running back. But that isn't Rosenthal's point. He values availability and durability over production. And because Williams was durable in 2024, the Rams haven't needed to go to their Blake Corum. On top of that, as Rosenthal's co-host, Nick Shook pointed out, "It's obvious, painfully so, when he's not on the field. They are so much worse as a running team without him when he's not on the field." Does this make Williams more valuable than McCaffrey? We'll see when and if the Rams open their checkbook to sign Williams to an extension.
