Jun Hao beats Jonatan Christie to reach S'pore Open quarterfinals
NATIONAL men's singles player Leong Jun Hao moved into the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open after pulling off a pleasant upset by defeating world number five Jonatan Christie from Indonesia.
Jun Hao, reported to be unwell before going into the match, however, won 21-16, 21-19 in straight sets after 53 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
'Since arriving in Singapore, I haven't been feeling well, so it affected my rhythm a bit today,' he told Bernama.
Not playing in the first round yesterday after receiving a walkover, the world number 25 player refused to give up even when his opponent tried to come back in the second set with more aggressive play.
'I tried to adapt as quickly as possible to the court conditions and focused on today's game. He (Jonatan) changed his game pattern in the second set, but I managed to hold on to secure the victory,' he said.
The third victory out of five matches against Jonatan also saw Jun Hao reach the quarter-finals for the first time this year, after his best results previously were only in the second round (Round of 16) at the India Open last January and the Swiss Open last March.
The country's sole men's singles player in the Super 750 tournament is determined to play more consistently from now on by improving his current playing style.
'Since last year my performance has been up and down. So start from this, I want to do the best,' said Jun Hao who will face world number two Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand tomorrow for a semi-final spot.
The reigning Thailand Open champion earlier defeated Wang Zheng Xing from China 21-8, 21-17.

Ariana optimistic national women archers will win medals at 2025 SEA Games

Cklamovski fires up team to work harder after beating Vietnam for first time in 11 years

Harimau Malaya delivered a powerful performance against Vietnam on home turf in their 2027 Asian Cup third round qualifiers, thrashing their opponents 4-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday. Cklamovski hailed his players' performance in front of 61,512 fans, as Malaysia got past their first tough fixture in the group against Vietnam to keep their Asian Cup dreams burning strong. 'Dream for it, because we've got that dream, without a doubt. We see the commitment the players have for that dream. 'We don't just think about it, but we have to do it by action, every day. And the performance the players put in is a reflection of what I see every day. 'I see a committed group of players hungry to build a team mentality that will make Malaysians proud. I'm very proud of the players,' he said. Cklamovski was quick to field fresh legs in the squad, giving playing minutes to newly arrived heritage players Joao Figueiredo, Rodrigo Holgado, Facundo Garces, Jon Irazabal, and Imanol Machuca. And they were quick to deliver. Figueiredo was first to break the deadlock in the 49th minute, followed by Holgado in the 58th. That's important because we don't just rely on one player but 11, regardless of who is out there,' he said. Although the dream to qualify for Saudi Arabia stays alive, Cklamovski reminded the team that the win against Vietnam is just a small step in their long journey. 'We can dream, but we have to recover, analyse the game, and then get on to the next one. 'We just got three points from the game, that's all. Rexy, Herry thank RTG for appreciating coaches' role with pay rise

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky and men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi expressed their gratitude to the elite athletes programme committee after they were rewarded with salary increases following the good performances of several doubles shuttlers. Mixed doubles and women's doubles coaches Nova Widianto and Rosman Razak were also given a pay rise. "I'm really happy to see the coaches get appreciated for their achievements and hard work. Thanks to RTG," said Rexy, who was redesignated from the national coaching director to managing the doubles in March. Herry, who was only appointed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in February echoed Rexy's sentiments.
