Infiniti to Unveil a Sleek QX65 Monograph Concept and Two New QX80 Variants

Car and Driver6 days ago
Infiniti plans on showcasing a QX65 Monograph concept and new QX80 Track Spec (above) and Terrain Spec models at The Quail during Monterey Car Week.
The QX65 Monograph is a concept that should closely resemble the production version of Infiniti's upcoming mid-size crossover coupe.
The QX80 Track Spec and Terrain Spec variants will also be on display, likely borrowing elements from the Nissan Armada NISMO and Armada Pro-4X, respectively.
With Monterey Car Week right around the corner, Infiniti plans on using the prestigious automotive gathering to show off a new QX65 Monograph concept and new Track Spec and Terrain Spec variants of the full-size QX80 SUV. The QX65 will be a new coupe-like mid-size crossover in Infiniti's lineup, and we expect the production version to closely resemble the upcoming concept.
Preview of the QX65 Crossover Coupe
Infiniti first hinted at the QX65 in a vague teaser shot released ahead of the Tokyo auto show way back in 2023. Many of the QX65's finer details were obscured in the initial photo, but it was clear to see that it featured a sloping roofline similar to the silhouette of other coupe-like mid-size SUVs such as the Audi Q8 and the Genesis GV80 Coupe.

This new image shows a small portion of the concept's front fascia, but the QX65 Monograph concept's upcoming reveal should give us a better preview of what the production version of the new model will look like. When Infiniti unveiled the QX Monograph concept at the event in 2023, the production version of the redesigned QX80 SUV was nearly indistinguishable from the model shown at the Quail. We think the same will be the case for the QX65.
We don't know what will be under the QX65's sheetmetal yet, but we expect it to be mechanically similar to the more traditionally shaped QX60 mid-size SUV. The QX65 will probably be built on that model's underlying chassis and crib its 268-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Infiniti might release more information about the production version of the QX65 following the reveal of the concept; we think it could arrive as soon as the 2027 model year in the U.S.
Two New QX80 Variants: One for the Track and One for the Trail
Along with the QX65 Monograph concept, Infiniti plans on showcasing two new specialized QX80 Track Spec and Terrain Spec variants.
The QX80 Track Spec will likely have a lot in common with the Nissan Armada NISMO, which features performance-focused upgrades and sporty design elements. The Armada NISMO uses the same 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 found in the QX80, boosted to 460 horsepower through engine reprogramming and revised valve clearances. In addition to the power bump, the QX80 Track Spec could also benefit from the NISMO's retuned steering and air suspension. A small chin spoiler is visible in the teaser photo and hints that the QX80 Track Spec will feature racier bodywork than the standard QX80.

Infiniti QX80 Terrain Spec, coming soon.
As its name suggests, the QX80 Terrain Spec is geared toward off-road enthusiasts and will probably take after the Nissan Armada Pro-4X. All-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, an electronic locking rear differential, a height-adjustable air suspension, and underbody skid plates are all likely to be features on the Terrain Spec. Its dark preview photo also shows a few rugged accessories, including a roof-mounted horizontal light bar, a storage box, and a metallic skid plate.
Infiniti is calling the new QX80 variants "design exercises" for now, implying that they could become production models if there is enough consumer interest.

Now at Car and Driver, Austin brings more than 10 years of experience in the automotive industry and an all-so-common love-hate relationship with German engineering to the table. Read full bio

Delays expected in Stockton as major construction project begins on Benjamin Holt Drive

Heavy equipment is tearing up the ground along Benjamin Holt Drive in Stockton. It'll be a sight and sound familiar to the area for at least the next three months as crews ramp up construction on three major projects along the same busy stretch. "That street is in horrible condition," Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi said. "The one thing we've heard from residents over and over again is, 'When are you going to fix these streets? When are you going to resurface them?' Well, this is going to go through an entire resurface in that stretch." The nearly two-mile construction project along Ben Holt Drive runs through both county and city limits. Because of this, they are working together to make this project as smooth as possible. "We're trying to be better and proactive to collectively get out there and tell the citizens what's happening and when it's happening," District Two Supervisor Paul Canepa shared. "We've been doing outreach on not only the water main ones, but as far as sending out little texts telling people, 'Hey, we're closing the road, and this is what the timeline is.'" San Joaquin County is working to resurface the portion from Plymouth Road to Gettysburg Place, but not before it replaces the water main underground from Pershing Avenue to Gettysburg Place. The city of Stockton is responsible for the street resurfacing from Grigsby Place to Plymouth Road around and underneath Interstate 5. "For longevity purposes, the only thing you can really do to improve the street is a resurfacing where you grind it down and put a fresh layer of asphalt," Fugazi explained. "Not just one, you put several layers so you don't have to worry as much about cracking and potholes." While months of lane closures and loud construction work may not sound great to neighbors, they are excited to eventually drive on a road that is pothole-free. "Where we are, you know, right here in the Pershing, Lincoln Center area, it's pretty good," Stockton resident Mike Downing said. "When you get over by I-5, it was definitely a little patchy and a little rough going over there, so I'm glad that they're taking care of it." The next temporary intersection closure will happen at Pershing Ave and Ben Holt Dr, starting Saturday at 8 a.m. to Sunday at 8 p.m. Construction for all three projects will wrap up by the end of the year, hopefully by November.
